Kapitel 41: Easter Plans

After everyone had eaten their lunch and chatted for a while to let the food settle, they began the trek back to the starting point where all of their cars were parked. It was good exercise but Eden was ready to lie down by the end of it.

Aubrey reminded her about their double date the following Friday night before they parted ways. They were originally planning on doing it on a Saturday before remembering that it was Easter weekend and that wouldn't work out since both of them had travel plans.

Eden had to drive down Saturday morning to spend the weekend with her family while Aubrey was driving to Merced to spend Easter with David's brother. They weren't married yet but they already had to switch off which holidays were spent with each person's family.

If she ever managed to find herself a husband, she would gladly forgo all her rights to do holidays with her family if it meant avoiding her mother's constant nagging. She would miss Ezra and Nadia though.

Seeing them next weekend would be nice. Nadia had Easter plans with her own family but she would be able to see her on Saturday at least.

It was only 2 PM when Eden got back to her apartment. Kayla was home for once watching a movie on the couch with her boyfriend so she headed to her room and plopped down in her desk chair. She may as well watch YouTube videos for a while until Troy got off work and she could text him.

She did feel pretty sticky from wearing that helmet though. It might be a good idea to shower first. She heaved herself out of the chair and gathered what she needed before heading to the bathroom. Rollerblading had wiped her out more than she thought it would, even if it was fun.

While she worked at Freddie's, her social calendar hadn't been nearly as full. Going back to a schedule similar to the one she had in college after nearly a year away from it was going to be difficult.

Aubrey was impossible to say no to though. Unless she actually had something more pressing going on, she always ended up being dragged along by her best friend. At least she ended up enjoying herself in the process  most of the time.

After her shower, Eden ended up watching a series of progressively more random YouTube videos until she was able to text Troy. She rather generically asked him how work was because she couldn't think of a better way to start the conversation.

'It was alright. Have you been doing anything fun today?' he replied.

'I went rollerblading with some of my friends. It was fun but I'm kind of dead now'

'Rollerblading, huh? I can bike and skateboard but I've never tried that. How do you manage to keep your balance?'

'Practice, my friend. Lots of practice. Aubrey got me into rollerblading when we were kids and it stuck. Didn't prevent me from nearly running into a pole today though. I got distracted telling my friends about Zim'

Troy sent over a couple of laughing emojis before a more serious second text. 'Ah, Zim. You never did tell me what ended up happening with the rest of your first week of training. Has he relaxed toward you at all?'

Eden smiled. She knew it would come back to this eventually. He was rather invested at this point after her venting session on Monday.

'I think so. Amanda seemed relieved too by the end of the day yesterday so it seems like I'm in the clear. For the most part anyway. I still haven't done anything on my own yet because of the training'

'You'll get there' he encouraged.

She certainly hoped so. She ended up changing the subject. 'Do you have any fun Easter plans next weekend?'

'Absolutely. My aunt will make us Easter baskets like she does every year because she claims that you're never too old for candy and we'll play board or card games most of the day and have a nice dinner. Nothing special but still fun. You?'

'I'm going down to L.A. to spend Easter with my family. I haven't seen them since Thanksgiving'

Eden hoped that it went better than Thanksgiving did. Her mom had gone on a rampage about her continued lack of a proper job despite being graduated for nearly six months. That had sucked.

With that out of the way, the next thing she would probably nag her about was when she was going to get a boyfriend. She was only twenty-three! There was no rush to get married, especially since Ezra was engaged.

Her mother would get her precious grandchildren soon enough. They were only waiting until Nadia was done with school.

They would have the most adorable kids. Eden couldn't wait to meet them either but at least she wasn't pushy about it like her mother was. Sometimes she wondered how Ezra could even stand living in the same city as her. He had to see her at least a few times a month.

What would it be like to have parental figures you enjoyed spending time with? She had gotten a small taste of what that was like spending so much time with Diana and her husband Ben when she was growing up but it wasn't the same. They weren't actually her family.

Her family was an adulterous creep and a woman who never gave her daughter the time of day unless she was berating her for something or other. At least Ezra loved her in the way only an overprotective big brother could.

With any luck, her mother wouldn't have anything to criticize this time. If she asked about her love life, Eden could truthfully say she had a blind date with a software developer. That ought to shut her up.

She sighed. She had a long week ahead of her trying to learn the ropes at her new job then a blind date and her mother to worry about. The weekend afterward was going to be all hers to sleep everything off, no matter what anyone wanted out of her.
