Feng Mei leaned against the car seat. She barely had any sleep again. Nightmares were still haunted her.
Shuffling through her mini fridge, she found some cold compress towels and placed them on her eyes. This was all in Hope that it would make all her black circles disappear. But it's not that magical, really.
Her ride was smooth, but somehow in the middle she got stuck in a traffic jam. Even after fifteen minutes, the car was not moving.
"Mr.Rae what is going on?" She whispered, removing the towel from her face.
"We had a small accident up ahead, Miss. should I go take a look?" Mr. Rae whispered, gazing back. His countless graying hair stood out even more under the hot sun streaming through the windshield.
"No need, let's take a detour," She whispered immediately. she was already late for her meeting. Those old cronies would be waiting to chew her apart for any reason. Being late is a big no-no.
But luck was not in sight. The traffic was so bad that they were stuck there for almost two hours.
An ambulance came and rolled out two men from the car crash. They looked almost identical.
'Twins?' she thought as the emergency responders wheeled past her window.
One of the twins even blinked at her with his empty eyes. "He's not breathing," the responders stopped the stretcher immediately and started doing emergency CPR.
All the while, the man kept looking at her with his empty eyes. After half an hour of effort, the responders were not able to save the man.
'I hope you have a good afterlife,' Feng Mei closed her eyes and prayed earnestly.
Sadly, right after he passed away his twin also died. Both of them passed away right in front of her eyes.
Thankfully, soon after the traffic cleared up. And they were able to reach her office.
Her shiny Rolls-Royce rolled up the parking lot of a posh looking hotel.
"Hey have you heard our CEO is coming in for that family board meeting". The valley guy whispered.
"You've heard too!" another server whispered.
Everyone has, she had been the talk of the town.
From inside Feng Mei saw the tired valets gossiping next to the door. 'Look at their black circles they probably had a bad day as well,'
The car's window rolled down.
"Here catch," Feng Mei whispered and tossed few roles of hundred bucks.
With fumbling hands, the valet guy caught it.
"Thank you for the generous tip, Young madam," he bowed continuously.
Feng silently walked into the lion's den.
"Madam, you are here. Please quickly get to the meeting room everyone is waiting." Feng Mei's assistant, Louis said while he was rushing over.
Feng Mei stopped his blabber and slowly walked inside her booked room. She removed her outer coat and tightening her tie. "There is still time," she whispered. The meeting was only at ten, so she was getting comfortable in her room.
"NO! The meeting started ten minutes ago," Louis shouted urgently.
"What! Those old cougars gave me the wrong time. Those bastards," she ruffled her curly dark hair and dashed out of the room.
The other shareholders had given her fake informed her that the meeting was at ten. She pulled out her tablet and checked the mail she received.
"Darn it," Feng Mei rushed through the corridor and finally reached the meeting room. Standing out, she took a deep breath and opened the door.
The old shareholders were sitting in an oval table with a handsome young man at the middle.
"You are late," He said, holding the meeting papers. This man was none other than her stepbrother, Eliot, born to her second mother and some other man. They were not related by blood.
Before she could answer him, a pig like man shot up from his seat and shouted, "Ms. Feng, how could you be late for such an important meeting. I even sent you a mail early this morning to come on time," The man said while wiping his precipitation Feng Mei shot a glare at the man and sat in her seat.
"Traffic," was the only thing she said.
Eliot gazed at her through his spectacles and then at the fat man. "hmm, proceed," he ordered.
The meeting proceeded without any glitch. It was a meeting to instate her brother as the CEO.
"Enough chatter, people who vote to instate my brother raise your hand," Feng Mei said with a calm smile.
Many hands flew up. It was so overwhelming that she knew that it was the end of her career as her own company's CEO. This company belonged to her father, and it was passed on inside the family. She had been working like a cow to bring in money, but these pig shareholders always looked down on her because of her gender.
To deter them, she cut her hair short dressed like a man, but nothing satisfied them.
Finally her company had gone to a stranger.
The shareholders' meeting ended in a dull note. Feng Mei slowly got up and flipped her bangs from her face. All the while, Eliot watched her with scrutiny.
"Are you happy now?" she taunted the blank faced bastard. His impassive blue eyes peered at her without blinking.
"I'm not. This isn't what I wanted," he said clenching the meeting papers tightly.
Feng Mei laughed out loud. Of course it wasn't. He wanted her to run deeper in ruin and misery. It had always been his goal, after all.
Her stepbrother who she didn't share any blood relation with has always been her doom. His mother was german and his real father, no one knew who it was. So he inherited her eye-catching ginger hair and blue eyes. As a kid, he looked more angelic.
So when Eliot initially came to their house, Feng was ready to accept him as her family.
But the next day he broke grandfather's antique vase and lied that she did it. Of course she denied it but and no one believed that it was possible for a six-year-old child to lie.
She was punished instead. It was just one of those instances. There were so many that happened in her fifteen years of life with him.
Her phone rang loudly, snapping her out of her thoughts.
Controlling her dark thoughts, she connected the call.
"Ms. Feng, as you instructed, I have set up a meeting with Mr. Ling. its today at noon 11.30 am," her assistant Lous said.
"Hmm, good work," she said calmly.
"Who was that?" Eliot whispered, peering at her through his spectacles.
Throwing a glare at him, she walked out without a word.
Walking out the meeting room, she cussed out loud. Her luck had been in the dump for a while now, and this meeting proved her conviction further.
she quickly called her assistant and told him to push the meeting time to 12pm. it was 11 am If she could rush ahead she would be able to make it.
This meeting will change her luck for sure. Mr. Ling a college student had developed and submitted a new love game to her company. First glance itself she could see its potential. This new game it will definitely be the next trending that's for sure.
If she could sign this game, it will definitely change her standing in the company.
"Yes, I can do this!" she cheered herself on and strode away.
Eliot watched her from the door. He still held the bunched up papers in his hands. "It's not what I wanted," he whispered slowly.
Feng Mei left the hotel and got in her car. Mr. started the car, but the car was not starting. She cussed out loud and ran out to hail a cab. Since it was lunch hour, most of the cars were full. She stamped her foot and stood near the curb. "Fucking luck,"
Just then a Ferrari stopped in front of her. The windows rolled down to reveal the stupid face of Eliot wearing shades. "Get in," he said.
Fend Mei stood firmly. 'As if I would get in your car,' she internally said, glancing at his smug face.
"It's going to rain soon do you want to get a free shower," Eliot said with a chuckle.
Feng Mei gritted her teeth and glanced up at the sky. The sky, which was clear till now, was starting to become cloudy. 'I....I don't have anything to say,' she resigned to her fate and hot in her enemy's car.
"Where to?" he whispered.
"Office,"
Eliot cranked up the radio and drove.
Glancing at him, she sighed again. 'I can't believe I lost to this little kid. My pride as an old lady...' she cried internally. She was thirty-two years as of today. Time went by so soon just ten years ago she graduated from college and joined her company, and now ten years later she was still here.
"Lunch?" suddenly he said.
Feng Mei glanced at him and shook her head. "work," she said.
Silently they travelled to their office. Feng got down and went in without even thanking him. Today she was not in the mood for fake pleasantries.
"Feng!" Eliot called to her with his hands outstretched.
"Don't even... I'm not in the mood today," She waved at him and walked inside.
