Kapitel 9: Deekus - A Scaled Scavenger

"One hundred fifteen... one hundred sixteen... one hundred seventeen." Deekus stares at his haul, pondering on searching to see if he missed anything. He sighs and stands, shoveling all of the gold into a knapsack. Dropping it next to his bedroll, he turns back to the sea to find someone dragging themselves out of the water and onto the cold wet dirt. Sea grass is wrapped around her legs like she had been dropped into the sea and got caught in a patch. From what Deekus can see she looks beaten, like she'd lost a serious fight. Her tunic has tears and there are cuts on her arms and legs.

She collapses in the dirt, turning her head toward him slowly and reaching out to him as she mouths the words "help me." Deekus sighs and pulls her the rest of the way out of the water. He can hear her wincing as her arms are tugged on. Leaving her just a little ways away from his camp he walks past her, wading back into the water for a second search.

The water is just as cold as it was during his last scavenge. Diving under he swims toward the shipwreck in hopes that there's more gold or even some jewels. Moving around the waterlogged ship he finds a room he didn't notice before. Opening the door he sees an old bed floating in the middle of it, a nightstand floats upside down with a skeleton whose hand is gripped to the handle of the drawer and a chest at the bottom right of the room.

As he opens the chest he finds something wrapped in a dark red cloth. Surrounding it are a few gems, even a gold emerald necklace. Stashing it in his bag, Deekus swims around to the other side of where the bed was where some septims sit alone. He backstrokes to the nightstand and opens it, expecting there to be something valuable. There's nothing. Exhaling, Deekus leaves the room and heads for the surface.

Breaking the water's surface, he looks over to his camp. He can see the seas victim trying to light his campfire but it looks like she's barely able to light a spark. After swimming back to his camp, he wades out of the water. He ignites a fire in his palms, shooting it into the campfire and it lights almost immediately.

"Thank you." Her voice is scarce and he watches as she curls up next to the fire.

"Dry off and then be on your way. I don't know healing magic and I don't have anything to treat your wounds with." He watches her nod her head then walks to his bedroll, grabbing his knapsack and dropping it next to the table. Sitting in the chair he empties his bag and stares at what he collected. After brushing the coins and jewels aside, he focuses on the item wrapped in cloth. It was heavy when he picked it up so it must be worth something.

Unwrapping the cloth, Deekus finds a stone tablet inside. It's of a lighter color, somewhat grey and ivory. Picking it up he notices there are characters inscribed into it, but it doesn't look like the normal languages. They're not scribbles either. Thinking it could be Daedric he drops it onto the table, not sure that he should keep touching it.

There's pressure on his head, and he watches as the tablet starts to glow orange and slowly levitate up into the air. Scrambling to get up out of his chair, he stands only to fall back down due to tripping over his tail. He turns his head to see that the elf is gone but before he can look for her something hard smacks into his head.

"They're just strange symbols." The girl stands next to him, leaning him onto the table. She wraps a nightshade flower around one of the horns on his head as if it's a decoration. Picking up the tablet she raises it high above her head before smashing it to pieces on a nearby rock. "It's silly how quickly someone will assume something is evil when they don't understand it."
