A/N: I've decided on a timeskip till 4th year. This chapter is a summary of those years. I would have forgotten some things, or there will be some other stuff retconned.
I'll do that through flashbacks.
Now, I changed the amount of cash he had been given, as a user pointed out that £1000 was way too much in 1930. Also, I'd forgotten about the fact that Dumbles gave TMR a money pouch from the school's orphan funds.
I added that part in the last 2 chapters. Check it out.
Now, on with it!
---
Time Skip: Three Years: 1933.
It's been three years since I joined Hogwarts, and I was enjoying it, a lot. For the first year, I did nothing but get used to using magic. Meaning no going through Teachers' heads for forbidden knowledge, or going to the Restricted section of the Library.
Heck, I didn't even go down to the chamber or the Room of Requirements for 3 years.
I did join my fellow Ravenclaws in the Library a lot of times, simply to study or complete the homework. Sometimes, I would sit with Darla and her friends, Mary Prewett, and Bernadette Jones. Jones was a muggleborn, like Darla, so they decided to be friends.
Darla is actually a very nice girl, and while her friends aren't that close to me, they are pretty nice too. For an 11 year old orphan at least.
Anyway, other than studying, and talking with my friends, I also went to my classes, obviously. My favourite subject by far, was transfiguration. It was taught by Dumbledore, and he was an amazing teacher. Our first 5 lectures were just that, lectures, with a lot of note taking.
Only after he quizzed us, verbally, and was satisfied with our understanding of the subject, did he give us matchsticks to change into needles. I managed it, after 3 complete failures and 5 partial successes, earning myself 5 points for Ravenclaw.
After everyone mastered that one transfiguration, Dumbledore kept us on the same time table. He would first explain everything about a topic, have us take notes, quiz us on our understanding, and only then came the practical.
In first year, and even second year, we only studied inanimate to inanimate transfigurations, meaning non living to non living. Each month, we would level up on the difficulty of the transfiguration.
The third year was the toughest yet, inanimate to animate, and vice versa. We had to change between living and non living animals. That.. was one long year.
Second favourite subject of mine, has got to be Potions, sharing the place with Defence against the Dark Arts, or DADA. It was taught by Professor Merrythought, who was just like McG from the movies.
First year was nothing serious, in Potions. Professor Slughorn used the first month to get all of us used to brewing. We memorized the ingredients and what they do, how they react with other ingredients, etc.
Then, he taught us, step by step, how to brew a simply boil cure solution. And, what do you know? About half the people had a perfect Potion, while other half had Potions that could be used without any side effects.
Snape really was a bad teacher, huh?
Anyway, by third year, we had increased the difficulty by a lot, although not as much as the upper years. I tried a few of the Potions that were in the books, but not taught to us, and managed them pretty well.
By the end of third year, I could without looking at instructions, make the Boil cure, burn healing paste, Pepper up, Anti Paralysis Potion, Hair raising Potion, Murtlap Essence (Heals minor injuries, and cuts), Star Grass Salve (which heals injuries), and a few more healing potions. I could also make the Polyjuice Potion, which was my extracurricular potion along with the Healing Potions.
As for DADA, we learned how to get away during the first year. Fleeing, for first years, is not that easy. We were taught the Light making charm, which I pretended to learn in that lesson, and ways to use it in different situations.
Meaning, Vampires don't like extreme light, so you'll have to close your eyes and cast "Lumos Maxima", or similar.
After that we learned other minor spells, some we learned in charms, and others in DADA. Third year was based around Dark Creatures, like Vampires, Werewolves, Dementors, etc. And the Professor just taught us about them, how to call for help using the colourful sparks, and the shield charm which can stop Physical objects.
The shield, Praesidio, was a precursor to the harder Shield charm, Protego. Where Protego protected agains both magic, and physical objects, except for the darker spells, and stronger spells, the Praesidio only protected against Physical Objects. So it was perfect for attacks by wild animals, or dark creatures.
We haven't met a Boggart yet, but I know that the subject of Boggart is taught in the Fifth year.
Charms was my third favourite. It was taught by a new professor, Thrud Rowle. She was cool, if a bit too excited to actually get to teach at Hogwarts, but she was a pureblood, so she controlled herself well enough.
There were a lot of charms we learned in the 3 years we were there. I finally mastered the Water making and Fire making charms, in the first year itself, followed closely by the Levitation charm, the Body Bind charm, Dancing legs jinx, and many more.
Other subjects, like Astronomy, Herbology, were interesting but not as much as the above mentioned. History of Magic was taught by the Ghost Professor Binns, so I did not pay much attention to it.
Instead, I read library books during the class. Mostly, I just read History books, as History was very interesting, but I also read other subjects too.
As for Flying, I learned it, but flying with a broom did not agree with me, so I just began learning to fly on my own. Telekinesis baby.
When Third Year came along, I selected Ancient Runes, Arithmancy, and Care of Magical Creatures as my subjects. Professor Kettleburn was very knowledgeable about magical animals, and he taught us in a fun way. Sort of like movie Hagrid, only smarter. No offense.
Ancient Runes and Arithmancy were fun too, if a bit tedious at the beginning of the third year. In both of those subjects, we haven't had any practical yet, and the rune carving, and using Arithmancy practically, is only taught to the NEWT level, meaning 6th and 7th year students.
Ancient Runes is the study of old languages, and how they contribute to our Magic. Runes can be said, if you know the right pronunciation, and the magic considers it a spell, and carries on the effect. Well, it does, but only if you say it with meaning, while intending to do that same effect, and channelling your magic through your throat.
Professor Shafiq, who taught us the subject, did not teach me that. Helena did. I'll explain more later.
Along with that, the Runes can also be carved on objects, or written on parchment, to enchant them, or do Magic. Meaning, I can carve rune schemes which collectively mean "Protect" on my shirt and it'll protect me. I have yet to try it though. Helena says I'm not ready yet.
But, this might make you ask, what defines a language as runes? Could English be counted? Nope. Runes are not letters, or words. Each rune has a meaning behind them. Sure, I can say my ABCs with magic behind it, but nothing will happen. I asked Helena about it.
As for Arithmancy, it was the study of numbers in making predictions, like Divination, and in spell crafting. For the one year that I was taught about it, we only learned theory.
What numbers to what? What formula should I use here? How will I calculate this?
But, other than my studies in the lecture, my own studies helped me a lot here. I was smart. Not a genius, but smart. And I had studied Maths along with Physics, because Physics needs maths.
So, when I found the 3rd year stuff too easy, I began raiding the library. First I mastered the third year stuff completely, then fourth, then fifth, and then sixth. At the end of my third year, a few months ago, I had just began with the Seventh year stuff.
It was amazing! The HP books did not go over it much, but I'm telling you, it's the most underrated subject here.
You need to win some prize money? Use Arithmancy to calculate the highest probability winner. Should I go on this holiday? Let's calculate it.
Should I plant my rose here? Calculations say it's gonna rain hard, so wait a while.
Literally every probability is calculable using Arithmancy. And that's just up to 6th year stuff. There's 7th year, then Masteries, and then even higher level stuff.
I was the best in every subject I studied, and that impressed everyone. My teachers praised me, the prejudiced Purebloods, who first shunned me for being a "mudblood" now began to think that there was some magical blood in me, thanks to recognizing my surname, Aves.
But, it also brought attention to me. I was always observed by someone or the other. If no one was, even then the paintings would. It was annoying, as I couldn't even control or read the minds of the paintings.
Along with my studies, and I made more friends too. As I've said, there was Darla and her group of girls, and then my roommates. Tom while a friend of mine, was even more close with the other two. So I maintained my reputation as a sort of loner here.
My best friend was Darla, and she was.. free. She did not have any expectations from her parents, other than to marry and settle down on her own. Unfortunately, she did not like guys, or I would have asked her out.
She did not tell me directly, but I saw after observing her. She would stare at the Slytherin prefect, Cassiopeia Black, who was 4 years older than us, and sometimes even drooled.
I don't blame her, Cassiopeia is hot. And it was an 11 year old me talking.
Friends of mine included Tom McAvoy, Darla White, Anastasia Greengrass, and Charles Abbot. I was acquainted with Tom Dodderidge, the son of the owner of Leaky Cauldron, who was in Slytherin, and thanks to him, I even got to know a few other Slytherins a bit.
There was Cassiopeia Black, who was downright scary. She was the Head Girl last year, and was the only student who's minds had shield, strong enough to stop a direct Legilimency attack. She was good, I know that.
Last year, when Tom D introduced us, she took a look at me once, and said, "You should go and get the Inheritance test in Gringott's. You'll be surprised what you can find there."
That surprised me, as she recognised me as a pureblood just by looking at my face, and even realized which family I was from. I went into her mind, with great difficulty, and without being detected, I heard her thoughts say, "He's an Aves, damn and I thought he was a mudblood with the same name. I thought they were all dead, so he must be a bastard of a bastard or something. Or from the squib line. But he's the only one left, so there's no one to contest his claim."
I told her I will, and ran out of there. She had a lot of plans on how to manipulate me into marrying her, and I was not staying there for more.
I did meet her a few more times, both alone, and in a group, and she flirted with me. A lot. I have to say, she was good, as I was almost ready to marry her right then and there.
And no, it was not mind control. She's not strong enough for that yet.
But, thanks to Cassiopeia, I met her. My next best friend, Dorea Black.
Dorea was one year younger than me, and was also in Slytherin like her sister, Cassiopeia. Unlike her cousin Charis, though, she was pleasant. Oh, she was Slytherin through and through, but she was loyal to her friends, ergo me, Anastasia, her family, and her pet cat, Kuro.
Yup. She named her Black black cat, as Kuro.
She was manipulative too, but nothing on the scale of Cassiopeia. Cassiopeia already had blackmail material on most of the students, and most of the staff, but she was keeping it close.
Dorea did try to flirt with me, probably on her sister's advice, but on a 12 year old girl, it just looked adorable.
Now, lastly, we come to Helena. Helena really mellowed out, in these three years. She was resilient, but I was persistent.
I talked with her everyday, just telling everything and anything about my day, while my body slept. At first, she was just listening, while smiling sadly.
But then, after a month or so, she began her own stories. She told me about her childhood with the other kids of the founders, of her big sister who went out and never came back, and even of her mother, under who's shadow she lived.
Rowena was amazing, and she knew that. Everyone knew that. But that made everyone look at Rowena's children with expectations as soon as they were born. This made both her daughters run away, the oldest, Morgan when she was 18, and the youngest, Helena when she was 17.
It was sad, but therapeutic for her. I realized that I was the descendant of Morgan, the older sister, who ran away from her mother's shadow.
Helena then told me about her death. She had stolen the Diadem, in hopes that it'll make her as strong as her mother, and stop everyone from calling her Rowena's weak daughter.
She ran away with the Diadem, to present day Albania, where a friend of hers found her, after Rowena sent him. They fought, he got angry, and stabbed her. Again, and again, and again, until she died. Then, getting remorseful, he killed himself. The Bloody Baron.
Now, his remorse shows itself on his ghost as the chains, and bloody clothes, while Helena still has clean clothes. Another way she's different.
But, how sad it must be, and how scary? She has to practically live with her murderer. No wonder she's so sad all the time. I almost went out and destroyed his spirit, but Helena stopped me.
She said, "What's done is done, Mason. I have already forgiven him for that, and he refuses to talk to me out of shame. Leave it be."
So I did, but I had my eyes on him. One wrong move and he's out.
I still went to find her, and just practiced my spells, or doing my homework in front of her. I did not ask for advice, and she did not offer. We just sat in companionable silence, after an hour or two of just talking.
After a year, Helen began to mellow out, and began to give me some advice here and there in my homework. In second year, she then began to help me with my spells, and the third year, Runes.
Most of my Runic knowledge was mostly her knowledge, that she passed on to me. Despite being called a weak child of Rowena, Helena was strong in her own rights. Her only weak points were her telepathy, and telekinesis, which I was helping her with.
Yup, as a ghost she could still use Telekinesis, and so could I in Astral form.
She was slowly getting better. While her Strength was still at the same point, I was working on her control. Sure, she can just control at most a few tons of stuff at a time, but she could do a lot of damage with that.
I taught her how to use one small block of earth in the best way possible. It was all thanks to another feature of telepathy I discovered.
Mind battles. I could call someone inside my mind, and have completely realistic battles, with either no real consequences outside, or with real consequences. Depends on my choice.
In that.. dungeon, I suppose, I taught her everything I knew about telekinesis. It was not much, but it was more than she knew. I also taught her how to turn anything into a weapon, so she can fight even when she's a ghost. This will help when Voldie comes knocking for the Diadem.
And that, covers up the last three years of my life, and the first three years of Hogwarts.
And now, the holidays after the third hear have just ended, and I'm sitting in the train, waiting for my friends to show up.
"Oh, Maso~on!!" a familiar voice to my left, from the now open door says.
I look up from my book, "Ancient Rituals", a birthday gift from Cassiopeia, (I had gotten her a book I wrote myself about better protecting the mind for Christmas), and drop my jaw.
There she was, standing with her hands on her developing hips, her chest just a bit bigger than last year, and some makeup on her face, and a black cat on her shoulder. Wearing a robe that enhanced her blue-green eyes, was Dorea Black. Sister of Cassiopeia Black.
Black curly hair, height of 5'2, Dorea was the perfect definition of cute. Until a few months ago, she was just the cute little girl who tried to flirt with me, and failed, amusing everyone from Cassiopeia to Darla. Now, she's still that, but she's getting from cute, to beautiful.
"Well.. crap." I say to myself, defeated, making her cackle. Because her manipulation might just work in a few years..
---
A/N: And them's the pairing. Dorea Black and Mason Aves. In canon, she's married to Charlus Potter, whom we know nothing about.
He's not in Hogwarts in this fic, as he goes to Durmstrang here.
Her looks? Hmm.. I'll have to think about it.
Now, perverts, this last part was not him falling in love, it was just him realizing that very soon, he's gonna fall for her charms.
She's still 13, and he's 14. They won't be doing anything yet.
Anyway, Tata!
Dorea Black is someone I believed to be Harry's grandmother at first. But she's not. She did have a Potter son, but they all died before 1979.
