Kapitel 12: chapter 12

As we arrived back at the cave, I had to sit down due to the throbbing pain in my leg. Maybe I pushed myself too much.

The beast laid next to me as I tried to get a better look at my wound. The skin around the claw marks was red, but the wounds were scanned over for the most part. As I inspected my leg, the beast watched, with its ears back.

They moved over while laying beside me and sat up looking at my leg. A low whine mixed with a growl from the creature before it started licking the wound.

To my surprise, it didn't hurt like I thought it would.

I let it do as it liked and started running my hands over its fur. The beast's own wounds seemed small than before... We're they just not as bad as I had first imagined? Once the beast was satisfied it looked over to me and laid back on its side. I gave the creature a small smile and yawned as I could feel my eyes getting heavy.

The sunlight completely disappeared from the sky as darkness took over. I shivered as the cold air of the night started to seep in. I moved to lay next to the beast, so I could sleep. The next thing I knew however I was being pulled against its warm body, with a squeak of surprise.

I looked up at the beast confused only to have my head turned away when it buried its face into the crook of my neck. I sighed and looked out at the cave entrance. soon enough my eyes became too heavy to keep open. I relaxed into the warmth of the creature as sleep took me under.

--------------

I jolted awake, as a strange feeling ran through me, and I could feel the hair on the back of my neck sticking up. Looking around I saw nothing out of the ordinary... We were still in the cave and it was dark out. The beast was still asleep behind me.

Carefully I turned around in its arms to look more closely at it. It stirred slightly in its sleep before relaxing again. I trailed my hand from its head down to its neck, as my fingers brushed against the cool metal of its collar. I looked closely at the strange pendant that hung from its neck. The red crystal reflecting my image. It was elegant and I could tell that a woman designed the strange thing with all the twists and flowering of the silver brace.

The sense of being watched coursed through me and I could feel the hair on my neck stick up as goosebumps crawled across my skin. I turned back and stared at the cave entrance as my heart started to race...something was wrong. As if sensing it too the beast shot up from its former sleeping position. Now on high alert with its ears pointed towards the cave entrance. I watched as its eyes scanned the forest outside looking for something.

I sat up and looked back at the forest as well, getting an eerie feeling. The beast suddenly took on a defensive stance in front of me, as its ears folded back and it snarled at the tree-line. I watched as three massive wolves stepped out, each of them with glowing eyes and a snarl of their own. But what made the blood drain from my face was the familiar and identical collars each of them adorned.

I stood up watching as they stepped closer. I knew the beast was fairly safe but there was no telling if these wolves were. I stayed behind him as he continued to snarl at each of them. Weren't they on the same side?! Why did it seem like the beast didn't like them? The beast started to step back keeping me behind them as the wolves closed in. These weren't normal wolves...they were the same ones that terrorized my village. But why were they here?! Why did they look like they were ready to kill the beast?

I looked between them, as my anxiety started to grow and my heart raced. I fell back against the wall as one of the wolves lunged at the beast. He quickly stood up and pinned the wolf before another jumped at him digging its fangs into his shoulder. The beast quickly knocked the wolf off and pinned its head down with his claws only to be attacked by the third.

He was much larger than the wolves and im sure if it was one on one he would outmatch them easily. But there were three of them, and he was injured. I Moved to the farthest wall away from the fight as they fought. The beast only continued to growl and snarl as he fended them off the best he could.

The first wolf he had thrown down, sat up and its eyes landed on me before its face twisted into an ugly snarl. It stalked forward. And I quickly realized it wanted to tear me apart.

The beast threw one of the other two wolves at the wall and noticed the wolf before it could lunge at me. He swiped at the wolf, his claws tearing through its side before grabbing me with one arm and running outside. They were quick to catch up and the injured wolf barely seemed phased.

The wolves quickly surrounded us again, much faster than the creature, while he was carrying me. He snarled and snapped at each of them, setting me down while he stayed over me protectively. They were too fast for him to outrun while he had me in his arms. I screamed as one of the wolves snapped at me, barely missing my arm. Beast snarled before swiping at its face, clawing out its eye in the process. In turn, the wolf yelped, but quickly turned back towards us and continued its approach.

Did they not feel pain?! Looking at each of them I realized they weren't even looking at the beast... They were targeting me. One wolf lunged snapping at me from behind. The beast quickly pinned it down and bit into the wolf's neck but before he could kill it, a second wolf jumped onto his back biting into his injured shoulder even deeper this time, causing him to roar out in pain. The third took this chance and grabbed me by the foot, dragging me out from under the beast's protection. I screamed as its fangs pierced through my shoe and started to dig into my skin. It started thrashing its head around with my foot in its maw. And I screamed as a sharp pain shot through my leg.

It was quickly knocked back into a tree, as the creature jumped over me protectively.

This was a losing fight. He couldn't take them all on while protecting me. We were going to be torn apart! He knocked back the other two wolves sending them flying a short distance.

The sound of breaking bones came from above me as I looked back at the beast. He stood on all fours and I watched in horror and confusion as his body started to change, and he started to look more like a wolf. My heart skipped a beat as his transformation finished, and the creature from before was gone...replaced by a giant of a wolf with the same eyes and fur color...

He can change forms?... i froze on the spot as his glowing golden eyes looked at me. He was panting heavily and his injuries were still there. As the other wolves recovered he came up to me and nudged me with his nose to get me to stand. I cried out in pain when I tried to stand on my injured leg. I had to lean against him just to keep upright.

The wolves started to close in again and he snarled back at them before pushing me onto his back. I put my legs on either side and held onto his fur as tight as I could. I didn't even have the chance to think about what he was planning before he took off running at an insain speed.

I squeaked and ducked down, holding on for dear life as he ran through the forest. Oh, gods....im riding a wolf! Looking back I could see the other wolves were running as fast as they could but they were nowhere near as fast as him. I held on praying that I wouldn't fall as he tried to lose them. The blur of trees was all I could see after a few minutes.

He's a wolf...just like them...i thought they were just similar before...that he was just some kind of deformed beast but now...i have no idea what he is...

Looking I could see he was focused on trying to get as far away as possible from those wolves. Had he always had this ability to change? My adrenaline started to wear off as we pushed forward. I kept my face buried in his fur and tried to keep warm as the cold air rushed past.

I wasn't sure how long we had been running but I could tell he was becoming exhausted.

"We need to stop!" He continued to push forward not slowing down in the slightest. Moving my hand to get his attention I stopped when it came in contact with something wet. Looking at my hand, I found it covered in blood. "Your bleeding..." An ache in my chest made me fear the worst, he didn't stop he could exhaust himself to the brink of collapse, he could lose too much blood! He could die.

"Stop! Please! You need rest!" My words seemed to fall into the void, unheard by the wolf. "Your still hurt! Please we already lost them!... if you don't stop you could die!" I choked on my words as if the thought of the wolf hurt...he was like this because of me...if he hadn't had to protect me he wouldn't be so badly injured...

He started to slow down, his sprint turning into a jog. His heavy breathing filling the silence of the night. I sat up and watched him as he continued to walk forward. He took a moment to sniff the air and turned in another direction before completely stopping.

Looking ahead of us i noticed an old cabin. We're there people inside? If they saw him they might attack... But if there wasn't anyone then I might find something to help with his wounds. "Let me down..." He crouched down and I slid off his back, cringing when my injured foot touches the ground. He whined looking at me.

"I'm okay... Just...help me get closer..." He walked beside me as I limped towards the house using him for support.

There was no light, no fires, or any sign of movement inside. We carefully went up the stairs of the porch and I moved over to a window to peer inside.

I could see some furniture but nothing to suggest anyone was inside.

Glancing back at the wolf I limped towards the door and opened it. Looking inside. Everything was covered in dust and there were no signs of anyone around.

We made our way inside. He barely fit through the doorway. I looked around at the small interior of the cabin.

There was a fireplace across the room with a mattress and some pillows in one corner. A wooden table and chair were pushed up against the far wall. There were shelves next to them with some bowls and other tools and appliances.

He made his way over to the mattress before collapsing onto his side. I made my way over to him and he opened his eyes tiredly to look up at me. He was completely worn out.

Sitting down I let his head, rest in my lap as my hands moved across his fur. "You saved me...again."

He looked up at me a moment more before closing his eyes...
