<These are tales from the distant past. They may be heavily embellished but they might also be accurate. I don't know what exactly a living god is as compared to just a god. But we have multiple gods amongst the dungeon masters who we work for. Going by that, nothing is impossible.>
So I work for gods? Are there benefits for working under the employ of a god?
<You are paid for everything you do. I don't know how much you know about the alpha plane but money can buy you most things.>
Can I buy food?
<Food? Well, I suppose but if you are hungry we do have a dining hall. The food there is free and delicious.>
Delicious?
<Interesting… I Never took Jade as a foodie. Wonder where you got that from. However, work before fun. I can't deal with Kent any longer so you'll have to meet him. I told him you had an accident and lost your memory as well as your human form. All you have to do is meet with, I'll be there and will handle most of the talking.>
And afterwards I get to eat food?
<Sure, you can gorge yourself on Pata's dishes until you pass out.>
I'm in! Where do I go?
<I'll guide you to where you need to be. Kent's already here and I'm trying to prepare him for seeing you.>
I follow Navi's direction through the white hallways until I arrive in a… what is this room?
<It's a consultation room. We use it to discuss private matters with customers. Usually, these are for the customer's information to be kept safe but now, it's to keep you out of sight.>
So adventurers hunt monsters and because I look like a monster that is bad? Why can I see this guy then?
<Kent isn't as set on killing any monster on sight as most common adventurers. Also, I think he has a light crush on Jade so he is much more forgiving in how she… well, now you, look.>
I stop hovering at the doorway and enter the room. As my tail slithers across the threshold, the young man sitting with his back to me abruptly turns around.
"Jade?"
"I am not Jade!"
I snap at him with quite a bit of bite in my voice but I'm so fed up with being called Jade! I am not her!
"As I've already explained to you, Kent, Jade's main consciousness has suffered extensive damage and this is an alter ego she created. Unfortunately, this alter ego can't access Jade's memory and also has some violent tendencies. Though that could also be attributed to her mutated form influencing her temper. Please call her Blood for the time being."
Navi quickly jumps in to explain things and I take the time to slither over to stand beside Navi. There's still room on the sofa next to her but I'm not sure if those thin sofa legs can support my current weight. Also, how does one sit with a tail?
<You can just tip backwards and sit on your tail as if it were a seat.>
I never thought of that. I shift my torso backwards and sit down on my tail. The resulting S-shaped tail proves to be surprisingly comfortable. I look back up and see that Kent is staring at me.
"How exactly did this happen to Jade? You just talked about an accident, but what accident could cause this?"
"Sigh, you know that Jade was researching the origins of the sanguine swordsmen. She tracked down multiple snake species that had gained a sanguine mutation. Based on that, she created the sanguine VR program which you previously experienced.
"However, Jade wasn't satisfied with that and searched for more evolved monsters with a sanguine mutation. She eventually found a lesser wyrm with that mutation in the dragon nest."
"Wait, isn't that where there was a large monster stampede recently and many adventurers went missing or died?"
Kent interrupts Navi but she doesn't mind and just nods.
"Indeed, Jade was tracking that lesser wyrm when the stampede happened. When we found her, she was already like this and the lesser wyrm was dead. She was covered in wyrm blood so our theory is that while killing it, her sanguine boost reacted to the lesser wyrm's blood and caused her body to mutate. From the last few correspondences we've had with her, some psychological factors that we do cannot discuss were also involved. Topics like her family or your father are absolutely off limits, got it?!!"
The air around Navi becomes oppressive and Kent trembles a bit before Navi stops pressuring him.
"Yes! I won't mention those things!"
"Great, then observe, Jade is alive and physically well. Psychologically, we are working on it but the mind is a lot more complicated. Seen your fill? That's it then, you can return to training and Blood can concentrate on getting better!"
Navi stands up and motions for me to follow her. The moment I rise from sitting on my tail, Kent also shoots up and seems a bit panicky.
"Already? Can't you wait for a while? I heard that it's good for people with memory loss to interact with people they know!"
"She barely knew you! You only met once in a VR setting."
"No, when she studied under-"
"Do not finish that sentence! If she wants to see you again, Blood will let me know. For now, she's tired and hungry so let her eat and rest in peace!"
Navi gives off an intense sense of oppression and Kent immediately shuts up. While he's quiet, Navi maneuvers me out of the room and down the hallway.
Don't you need to guide him out?
<He can find the way himself. That was way too close, he was about to fully unpack! Is that idiot deaf? I told him not to!>
I don't know why, but I kind of miss him…
"YOU WHAT?!!!"
