Kapitel 201: Sanguine venom (4)

Man, these sub-dragons are a pain. I have been moving through this dungeon for a few hours now and most of my time is spent backtracking and looking for a way to avoid the territories of the stronger monsters.

I must have spawned in a pretty crappy location because that place was teeming with strong sub-dragons. Where I am now the lesser sub-dragons make up the majority and true sub-dragons are rare.

Still, even the lesser sub-dragons are plenty strong. I have yet to challenge one since I wanted to find an opponent where my victory is certain.

So far I have two candidates that I have deemed as easy opponents. One is a salamander that is wholly reliant on its fiery breath to keep opponents at bay. I should be able to charge through its breath attack by relying on my heat resistance and hardened scales. Once I am on top of that stupid lizard it will be game set.

The other option is a lesser darkness lindworm. According to Navi darkness types are rare and very feared by adventurers since they can't see the opponent at all and that is fatal during a fight.

However, I saw how the lindworm fought another lesser sub-dragon in that darkness. My thermal vision penetrates through the darkness without issue after all. The lindworms fighting is extremely crude and completely reliant on the opponent being disoriented.

With the factor of my thermal vision not being impaired, I should go for the lesser darkness lindworm but my urges want me to challenge the salamander and beat it up.

<Your first shred of sub-dragon pride. Don't let it be your downfall.>

So this feeling is what causes all this territorial bullshit in this dungeon? Well, screw that feeling I'm going to go and waste that lesser darkness lindworm.

I slither my way from my current hiding place to the next crossroad of tunnels where I then take the tunnel leading to my opponent's nest.

When I enter the cavern the lesser darkness lindworm seems ready for a fight and is roaring at me in a not so intimidating display of its body that is smaller than mine.

Its scales are wholly black and seem polished so that they reflect the light from the luminous plants and glowing gemstones illuminating the cavern. The glossy sheen on the scales makes me believe that this monster is extremely slippery. Probably to avoid being grabbed while attacking in the darkness.

Noticing that its threat has gone without the desired effect of me retreating for too long the lesser darkness lindworm switches to the offensive rather quickly. At least this spares me the waste of time roaring and hissing at it for a couple of minutes.

It crouches on the ground and the light inside the room begins to wane as darkness spreads like a tidal wave filling the cavern. My normal sight fails me but my thermal vision remains unimpaired.

The sneaky lizard bastard has no idea I can see it. It is dancing around in the darkness as if it is already certain of its victory. In order to maximize the effect of my deceptive little trick I wildly turn my head and hiss at the darkness. My acting is less than perfect since I need to continuously keep the lesser darkness lindworm in my field of vision but it doesn't seem to notice.

I send a few random energy fangs flying through the cavern and begin to move forward while pretending to be disoriented. The lesser darkness lindworm ends its premature victory dance and circles around me.

It takes all my determination not to turn my head and keep looking at it. My defense is strong so I can take a few hits without concern for my well-being.

The lesser darkness lindworm lands a few hits by launching quick attacks with its claws before immediately slinking away into the darkness. It always keeps a certain distance from me to avoid being caught in one of my random attacks using my energy fangs.

Finally, it launches into another claw attack while it's within my field of vision and I decide that it is time to strike. The unassuming lizard bastard doesn't even know what's about to descend upon him!

I retract my body slightly to make the outstretched claws miss me by a hair's breadth and whip my tail straight down on its head. Even without activating my sanguine boost the force from my tail immediately floors the lindworm. It seems to have been knocked dizzy by the heavy impact on its head as it is now the disoriented one.

Before it has much time to recover its wits I throw myself onto it and prepare to sink my fangs into its neck.

I expect a struggle as the lesser darkness lindworm will probably sense how bad the situation is for it and become desperate. However, my expectations do not come to pass.

The lesser darkness lindworm goes limp as a boiled noodle and whines in a high-pitched tone.

"I surrender!"

"You can speak?"

"Of course, I can speak!"

<Remember that you have the universal monster language skill. You can understand any kind of monster though even without it you could communicate with other sub-dragons or even dragons for that matter.>

I am a bit surprised but pull back my fangs and let the lindworm get back up.

"How come I've never heard the others speak?"

"You're a weird one... We noble members of the dragon bloodline usually don't talk much. I wouldn't have spoken up either if you hadn't been about to bite my head clean off."

Noble members of the dragon bloodline?

<Sub-dragon pride at its best. They think themselves the greatest and all that arrogant crap.>

"Why are you still here? Shouldn't you be leaving since I won the fight?"

"I built my nest here so why would I leave? I'll just become your subordinate and stay here. Maybe you will even grace me with some offspring. With a powerful father like you, they will surely be strong and healthy dragons."
