Kapitel 149: Time to get to work (1)

The daggers hit the skeleton swordmaster's skull and to my great delight they break through. This is my win.

My elated mood only lasts for a second as searing pain flares up from my leg. Looking down I find that my leg is no longer around. While I was busy striking its skull the skeleton swordmaster picked up its sword with the other hand and slashed at me blindly.

My leg was lopped clean off by the skeletal hand that now falls limply to the ground as my foe is slain. I have emerged victorious. But at what price?

<Stop being so dramatic. This is clearly as far as you can currently go so I'll end the VR simulation and send you back into the dungeon.>

As I am about to hit the ground my body disintegrates and I am back in the VR capsule for just a moment before Navi moves me to the eighth floor of the great labyrinth of death.

But before I do anything else, isn't there something you should say, Navi?

<I admit that I have underestimated your current combat ability. But try not to lose a leg next time, will you.>

That was out of my control. If I hadn't used both my daggers and my energy dagger skill hadn't leveled up I would have failed to destroy that skull.

<I told you it was strong!>

But it really isn't! The only thing that makes it hard to beat is its parameters that are above mine. Its sword use skill is certainly a high level but it has no idea how to incorporate it in a real battle. It has so many advantages but doesn't use half of them!

A seasoned adventurer whose stats are equal to it would win nine out of ten fights!

<Hades is not going to like that feedback.>

Then don't send it to him. Those shortcomings aren't something he can change. It needs combat experience and a viable strategy. The whole setup of that room is pretty useful if you know how to exploit it.

<Really? Then let's do that right now!>

Nope, one thing after another. I'll go through the boss rooms in order and now it's time to take care of mages respite.

Without listening to whatever Navi is going to say next I walk into the boss room and approach one of the skeleton mages. Since I am a monster I don't need to fear them attacking me or lighting the entire room on fire. Restoring the room after every fight must be a real pain.

"Can you talk?"

I didn't hear the skeleton mages speak during my fight with them but since they are intelligent enough to cast spells they should be able to talk, right?

The skeleton mage shakes his head. He seems fully capable of understanding me but it seems he can't speak.

<He's a skeleton for gods' sake! Skeletons don't have vocal cords so they can't speak. They communicate through gestures or specific sounds made with their bones.>

So the skeleton swordmaster was talking when he was clacking his jaw?

<He endlessly repeats go die, worthless disbelievers.>

Aha.

I turn my attention back to the skeleton mage and see that he is giving me this weird look that seems to ask me what I'm doing here. Wait, is that actually his he speaks?

"Did you just ask me what I'm doing here?"

He nods and gives me another look that tells me that asking that made me look stupid. But how am I supposed to know what's just my imagination and what isn't?

No matter, I can communicate and that's enough.

"To answer your earlier question, I was sent here by the dungeon master to train you so you can better defend the dungeon. Are you ready to be trained?"

The skeleton mage hesitates for a moment but nods. He then points at the entrance and looks back at me questioningly.

"You're worried about intruders? So what if they come while we are training. I'm pretty strong so while I'm here this boss room became a lot more difficult."

That greatly relieves the skeleton mage and he lowers his hand. I ask him to collect the others and meet me at the exit of the floor. No way I'm explaining all of this to the other six too.

They all arrive only a few minutes later and I begin to talk to them about the changes I think need to be made.

"First up a question. Is do all of you have another magic skill you can use besides fire magic?"

They shake their heads in unison.

"Just as I suspected. Here's the problem, you have no resistance to fire so the moment everything starts to burn you take just as much if not more damage than your opponent. We need to find a way for you not to kill yourselves."

They stare at me blankly like I just talked about some kind of quantum physics problem. It's not that hard to understand! Do not get killed by the fire you set!

I want to yell at them but hold myself back. I am supposed to help them improve and not make them feel bad about how they've been doing things.

"Ok, let's take this slow. It would be best if you could become immune or highly resistant to fire but I have no expertise in that area. Next best thing I can think of is not having you stand in the fire. Try to avoid being touched by flames, alright?"

They all nod in unison and I sigh loudly. Making conversation like this is quite taxing. At least they seem to listen.

"Another thing I'd like you to do is move after you cast your spells. Those fireballs fly in a straight line so you can be found if the enemy follows the trajectory. Just move a bit and you'll be way harder to find.

"Adding to that, please only fire on enemies you see and not the place you last saw them in. You can't fire continuously so you need to make every spell count.

"And always remember, the adventurers in this room need to get all of you to move on. They are looking for you and not the other way around. As long as you are still intact they are in trouble. Time is your ally!"
