Kapitel 137: Memorial falls (3)

Her brain is completely fried and her eyes rupture releasing bloody tears. I can't help but feel pity for her so I quickly finish her off. With the only fully capable fighter of the group gone, the rest is quickly swamped by the skeletons. They desperately try to fight off death but they already have one leg over its doorstep.

Since the thief has priority I slash at his neck and he falls over as the life leaves his eyes. The ice mage that he has been carrying is dropped and half crushed under the large body of the thief.

With the priority target down I leave the wild melee being confident that the skeletons can handle this or at least do enough damage for the adventurers to die of their injuries before reaching the base camp.

I open my dungeon map and locate the four escapees. Unfortunately, I can only see the adventurers as red dots so I can't distinguish them. Any way for me to get some more details, Navi?

<You don't have the clearance level to get that kind of info. Your main mission here is to strengthen defenses anyway.>

I know but they saw me attack them so if they reach the camp they are going to talk about me for sure.

<I see your point. If we could take them out of the picture that would be nice. Having rumors of your presence in this dungeon circulate would be suboptimal. But if they reach the base camp you need to back out. We don't have the time or resources to deal with those camps.>

Looking at the map the closest to my current position is a pair of red dots located in a hidden niche of a tunnel. I'm almost certain that these two red dots are the pugilist and his wind mage partner. Since they are close and stationary I will take them down first.

I round a corner and see bloody footprints leading in the direction of my opponents. Looks like someone got hurt more than they let on.

I follow the bloody tracks while keeping an eye on the map. The pugilist class seems to have a skill that can detect life force entering a certain range to them. I learned that the hard way last time so I am not repeating that.

I keep a distance of ten meters and begin to create rock needles from the ground. Since they don't know I'm here yet I remain undisturbed as I make twenty rock needles. I even pick up some vestiges of the conversation they are having.

"...can't...need to stay together."

"Nonsense...went straight through...lost too much blood...leave me."

I can't be sure that I got a clear picture here but it seems like the pugilist is wounded and wants the wind mage to leave him. She on the other hand has no intention of doing so.

By the time I finish the twentieth rock needle the two are beginning to raise their voices. They are getting more and more worked up and seem to forget about their current location or that they should keep it down.

Them being busy with their relationship drama gives me the perfect opportunity to launch a surprise attack. I charge down the tunnel while tightly gripping eight rock needles in my hands. When I'm about four meters away from the niche in the side of the tunnel the pugilist suddenly goes still.

"Dammit, something's coming this way."

However, by the time he says that I'm already in front of the little alcove in the stone. I throw all eight rock needles and run on without looking inside. Only a moment after I move on a sharp wind blade cuts through the air where I had just thrown the needles.

Since I continued running after throwing the needles the counterattack has missed me completely. After the wind blade hits the tunnel wall I hear a male voice groan in pain.

"Idiot, you shouldn't protect me when you're already injured!"

"It's my job to protect you, sweetheart."

I turn and carefully approach the alcove again. This time I only hold two rock needles in one hand and a dagger in the other. I'm ready for another wind blade to come shooting at me but nothing comes.

Sobbing sounds come from the alcove and after two quick steps, I see the wind mage kneeling next to the collapsed pugilist.

Six of the eight rock needles hit him in all kinds of places and his breathing is labored. His eyes however rest on me as he tries to open his mouth and warn his partner. But only rasping sounds escape his throat.

Instead of warning the wind mage, those sounds distract her as she frantically tries to pull the needles out of him.

Unfortunate for them yes. However, they should have never come here in the first place.

I slit the wind mage's throat from behind and blood is spilled all over the dying pugilist. His eyes look at me with hatred for killing the one he loved. They lose all life when I sink my dagger into his heart.

I reopen the dungeon map and frown. One red dot has just reached the fourth floor while the other one is arriving at the entrance of the third floor. Chasing after them now would be unwise. If the red dot on the third floor reaches base camp and calls for backup I might meet them while fighting the guy on the fourth floor. Not worth it!

I return to the memorial falls where the corpses of the adventurers gave already been absorbed by the dungeon. The skeletons are aimlessly walking around the room with some of them having picked up new weapons from the adventurers.

I count 50 skeletons and no additional ones seem to be coming down the waterfall. I consult Daedalus' files that I had left on Charon's boat and find a text that describes the workings of this boss room.
