Kapitel 135: Memorial falls (1)

<You are currently part of the working force of this dungeon so you may engage any adventurers you come across during your work.>

That settles it then. I jump off from Charon's boat and run towards the lake. While running I grab one of the miniature javelins I have strapped to my back and hurl it as hard as I can. The javelin whistles through the air like an arrow and hits the ice mage in the back.

The sudden attack from a source they hadn't been anticipating makes the adventurers completely helpless as the ice mage loses his balance and falls headfirst into the lake. The others try to pull him out but the piranhas swarm him before this is possible.

The wound from my javelin along with the countless vicious bites from the murderous fish put the ice mage into a critical condition. Unless he gets treated by a healer immediately or gets sent to a hospital in the next few minutes he will certainly lose his life.

Too bad that this group of adventurers doesn't have a healer and the next hospital is quite far away and probably unavailable to them since they aren't from the alpha plane.

"We need to leave! He's not going to make it if we don't get him to a healer quickly. Let's break out and head to the base camp on the third floor."

A tall swordswoman seems to be the one in command. She had been the first to reach for the falling ice mage and is now confidently giving instructions to the others. If I take her out this fight will be so much easier. But what was that about a base camp on the third floor?

<In large dungeons like this humans tend to set up base camps every few floors in locations that are easy to defend. They act as relief stations for adventurers who take too much damage to continue delving.>

Shouldn't we try to destroy such things?

<It's not worth the effort when we are this close to the entrance. Reinforcements from outside would arrive before we could finish them off. Killing the adventurers before they reach base camps is far more efficient.>

If you say so.

The tall swordswoman is cutting a path through the skeletons with broad swings. Her efficiency compared to before has risen by more than twofold and she is still speeding up.

<Her efficiency might have gone up but she isn't killing the skeletons anymore. Unless you break their skull they can reassemble the bones that are still intact. Losing an arm or leg means nothing to them since they don't feel any pain.>

I grab another miniature javelin off my back and hurl it at the tall swordswoman. She senses the projectile before it even gets close to her and spins around slashing at it. Her blade and the tip of the javelin meet and the javelin is deflected.

The lady darts one look towards me before immediately continuing to hack her way through the skeletons at an even more furious pace. She must think I'm a unique monster and thereby a large threat.

With her acute sensing ability and fast reflexes, I see no point in throwing another javelin at her. Instead, I aim at the others in the group.

The wounded ice mage is carried by a rough-looking guy whose size is truly massive. I can't help but wonder how I've only seen him now. Upon closer observation, the skeletons seem to also be unaware of his presence. He and the wounded ice mage are completely ignored.

I focus on him and quickly find out why. The big guy's class is thief and he possesses a skill that makes people overlook him. I find it a little ironic that someone as hard to overlook as him, has a skill like that but hey, who am I to judge.

<Put priority onto killing that big guy. That is a unique skill he possesses.>

Meaning?

<He was born with that skill and it makes him special. If he levels the skill up it can become troublesome and if he has children they have higher chances of also having unique skills.>

Damn, I wish I had been born with a unique skill!

I put those thoughts to the back of my mind and throw my third miniature javelin. The big guy is so used to going unnoticed that he has zero awareness of the projectile hurtling towards him.

I purposely didn't aim for his upper body and instead aimed for his thigh. The javelin sinks into the thigh but quickly stops and fails to penetrate further. Due to that dude's size, his thigh is too thick to be easily penetrated.

Still, the javelin fulfills its purpose as the big guy stumbles and goes down on his knees. The pain causes him to snarl and grind his teeth as he tries to prevent a scream from leaving his throat. His skill must be weak at hiding sounds so if he screams the skeletons will instantly become aware of them.

With the big guy down the entire group is forced to a stop. The tall swordswoman turns her head to assess the situation before returning to cutting down the skeletons. Since she doesn't have the time to kill them all she's doing right now is buy them some time.

The team's scout runs over to the big guy and takes a look at his leg before shaking his head.

"This thing went in too deep. We can't afford to pull it out or you'll bleed to death within minutes. Can you keep going?"

The big guy nods and takes a few deep breaths before putting strength into his legs and rising from his kneeling position. He looks pretty bad and his condition is definitely not good. I mean there is a javelin stuck in his thigh.

Too bad that there's about to be a lot more stuck in there than that. I didn't just target his legs to slow the group down so they would get more pressure from the skeletons. I also needed them to be stationary for a while so I could cast a spell.
