Kapitel 88: Into the muddy fray

I fling out my arms and manage to grab ahold of the branch that I just pushed the elf off. The branch bends dangerously as the momentum of my fall is canceled and thankfully it doesn't break.

The elf turns around while still falling and fires three arrows at me in quick succession. These arrows aren't as fast as the others since he shot out of a bad position but they are still flying very accurately towards me.

I'm hanging off a branch by my arms so dodging isn't an option. Since I can't dodge I kick my legs forward and pull my body up a bit. I manage to kick two arrows out of the air and the third only hits my leg.

It still hurts though and I nearly let go of the branch. I try to ignore the pain and look down to see if I need to fear any more arrows coming from that elf. Thankfully he seems to have been hurt by the fall and is now being besieged by the skull goblins.

I cautiously climb up onto the branch and continue to find more elves that I can push into the wild melee below. I need to move very carefully now because the treetops are filled with elven scouts and below the soldiers are already arriving. What a mess!

<A very useful mess. Try to hold on as long as you can. Reinforcements are already on their way.>

What kind of reinforcements? If it's more of those brainless skull goblins then I can do without them. Unless I can get all of those elves out of the trees and prevent them from going back up they are useless.

<The reinforcements consist of a group of dryads and three swarms of harpies. They should be able to make the elves descend from the trees without a problem.>

That's good then.

"I finally found you. I won't allow you to throw any more of my people off the trees. Die, you wretched creature!"

Hearing a voice behind me I spin around and get pierced by an arrow through the chest. An elf lady is standing behind me with a look of disgust on her face. She hasn't drawn another arrow yet since she must have been under the impression that I would immediately die from her arrow.

However, since she spoke before releasing the arrow I was already turning my body when the arrow hit me. Due to the angle at which the arrow pierced me it missed my vitals and I am not quite dead yet!

I throw my daggers at her to divert her attention and lunge for her legs with all my remaining strength. She crouches to avoid the daggers and doesn't have enough mobility to stop my approach.

I grab her ankle and bite down as hard as I can. I usually try to avoid doing something as uncivilized as biting someone but hey, the lady just shot me.

Since I jumped I naturally lose my hold on the branch and begin to fall. My teeth however are still in the elf's flesh so she is dragged down with me. I look up at her and come face to face with a fully drawn bow that is here centimeters away from my head.

That's going to hurt, isn't it?

With a snapping sound, the arrow is released and a blinding pain explodes from my head as everything goes black.

Hello darkness my old friend, I kind of didn't miss you so why did you come? It is my fault? Ah yes, understandable.

<Are you alright or should I leave you to your mad ramblings?>

How's the reinforcement coming along? Are they there yet?

<Moving troops isn't something that is done within a minute.>

I wait a while and since I'm bored I try to activate my soul vision. I'm hoping to see the threads again but all I see is darkness.

Still, my fruitless attempts help me kill time until I suddenly find myself back in my body. The din of battle isn't far off so I hurry over. The wild melee on the ground has only worsened and the skull goblins are losing. The corpses are starting to pile up and the human soldiers slowly turn the battle in their favor. I hear a cry and see another elf falling from above with Jade furiously biting all over her body. As soon as the elf hits the ground Jade slithers away and whooshes up the closest tree.

I guess I'll just try to fuel the mayhem down here and stall the soldiers as long as possible. With my goal set, I charge into the melee and engage the closest soldier I can find.

The soldier barely pays any attention to me as he is busy clashing with three skull goblins. His level is around 50 and his skills are good. Whenever a skull goblin attacks him in a spot he can't defend well two shields made of energy appear to block the attack and all his attacks are accompanied by two energy swords. I want that skill too!

As I sneak up from behind I notice that the energy shields only appear when the soldier sees the attack. I approach him while carefully remaining in his blind spots and once I'm close enough I stab one of my daggers into his neck.

He wants to turn around to face me but I hop on his back and drive my other dagger into his unprotected armpit. The sudden influx of pain and the force of my jump make the soldier tumble forward.

Since he is busy falling I start to twist the dagger in his neck making the soldier draw rasping breaths. After two full twists, his body goes limp. Maybe he died, maybe he's in shock or maybe he just fainted from those injuries I don't care.

I turn to look for my next target when I see that the skull goblins are preparing to run off.

"What are you idiots doing? Pick up his weapons!"

They just look at me with big clueless eyes.
