Kapitel 79: Instructing Sean

<That sounds pretty horrible. Is that what happened to you?>

It sure did. I was young and naive. By the time I realized what was going on I had already been working for that company for three years.

<How did you manage to get out?>

I never really did. When I realized what was going on I left the company immediately but just ended up joining a similar one with the same problems. Luckily I met an old man amongst the carriers who offered to teach me some things in exchange for carrying some of his stuff during delves.

With my dismantling skill leveling up to level three I started to earn enough money to support myself. When it leveled up to level 4 and I became a senior carrier I was barely able to support a family albeit with many issues.

<Is there no way to get out of that vicious cycle?>

While carriers are needed they are rarely appreciated. To earn good money as a carrier you either need to have a dismantling skill above level seven, possess storage-related skills, or combat capabilities.

<I can see the first two being difficult to achieve but what about the third one?>

If you had the potential to become a combatant why would you settle for being a carrier? No one would waste their time teaching a carrier how to fight for free and money is as stated before an issue.

<Hmm, we might be able to make a business out of that then. I will have to look into that. For now, I wish you a good lesson.>

I enter the VR-room for instructors and take a seat in a capsule. Since Sean has already acquired the skill I can be a bit more demanding on him so I steel my resolve and make my wish for the training environment.

I want a dark and narrow system of caves. Every few meters there should be a fresh corpse of a low-level monster. The monster should have wounds as if they were killed by adventurers but they only start to be affected by time when someone starts dismantling them.

The white room around me starts to morph. Conforming to my wishes I end up in a dark cave tunnel. I walk around for a while to get a sense of how vast the cave system is but discover that no matter how far I walk I never reach the end.

I try to activate my dungeon map skill to see if I can use it. The skill works without problems but doesn't help me. A large system of caves is shown to me but at the edges of the map, the tunnels continue.

I walk for a while longer with my map out and indeed, the map moves with me at the center but all that does is uncover more tunnels. This area, for all intents and purposes, seems to be infinite.

Before I do make any more tests a swirl appears beside me and Sean is spawned in. He looks more mature than when I last saw him. The moment his body arrives he looks around cautiously and his muscles tense, ready to get him away from any eventual dangers.

"I see that you've started working as a carrier. Good reflexes you've got there."

Seeing that there is no immediate danger Sean relaxes a bit and straightens his posture.

"You can tell just by looking?"

"Well, I was also informed that you had acquired the dismantling skill. All I did was put two and two together. I was once a newly minted carrier too, you know."

"Can you tell me how to get out of that contract?"

"The one-year contract in exchange for the skill?"

"Yes!"

"No chance. You can't get out of that contract."

"But the pay for dismantled materials is horrible! It's basically robbery!"

"It's the same at other companies. The issue isn't the company but your worth as a carrier. Unless you get your skill to level three you won't get anywhere."

"So it's the skill level. Does your cost increase for higher levels?"

Navi?

<You can decide that yourself but I'd suggest leaving it the same for levels one to three since that's just a question of proficiency and precision.>

"Until level three the price remains the same."

"That's good then, I don't think I could afford more with just my allowance. Using my savings this early would be unfortunate."

"You still get an allowance? Man I'm jealous, wish I'd had that back in the days."

"I'm indeed lucky it seems. The other carriers from the program all said that they couldn't afford courses to increase the leveling speed of their dismantling skill. No matter how bad my family treats me at least I get some financial support."

"You've got it rough in your own way, huh."

"Everyone has their issues. Mine's a family of mages as a child with no magic talent."

"The warrior path..."

"I'm not suitable for that either. I'm bad at everything I've tried except dismantling."

"Then we should make sure that you get really good at that. As you can see we are in a cave with lots of monster corpses. You'll be dismantling them until the lesson finishes."

"You sound like those overseers from the slaughterhouse."

"A harrowing experience I know but I assure you this is different. I will be with you all the way giving you tips, advice, and maybe even some instructions."

"Do we have to do this in a dark cave?"

"Having your vision impaired inside the dungeon is quite common so you should get used to it early on."

And so Sean begins to dismantle monsters. He starts with a goblin that was run through with a sword. He has the dismantling skill but since its acquisition was rushed his form is terrible. He rushes the cuts and messes up the proportions. The result is as expected a sloppy mess of materials.

If I was a merchant or shop owner I wouldn't buy this anywhere close to the market price. This kind of quality is good for market growth but earns carriers little money.

There's a lot of work for me to do here.
