Chapter 60
The Darvan warrior tore up the ground, its claws digging into the wet ground flinging mud around it, Reskemes braced himself, his spear slightly shaking as the mud shifted from the pressure of his boots. The Darvan warrior lept, its Claws shimmering with blue mana, Reskeme felt his long spear enter the chest of the Warrior the weight of the Fearsome monster impaling its leather-clad chest spilling hot blood all over Reskeme rain-soaked face.
Reskeme felt horror as he watched the rage and terror as the eyes of the Darvan warrior widened in pain, The realization of its death shown in its shocked expression. Jerking his Naginata back he heard an audible squelch feeling the slick spear wrench from the chest of the dead Enemy. Reskeme stares down unable to shake the feeling of loss, the horror of taking the life of this intelligent creature sinking into him much more than even killing a human had.
He felt a rushing crashing anger wash over him, he staggers back behind the line of soldiers staring at the Darva grouping up to charge. The Darva Howled, each in unison letting out a howl that shook the gloomy day. Feet slipping in the mud Reskeme felt a chill the cold of the rain seeping into him. His thoughts cut off as The soldiers braced holding bucklers and swords. Reskeme was hit upside the head a soldier beside him smiling with bloodlust, turning he glared rage in his heart, fury for these humans.
Pushing aside the thoughts Reskeme wonder what he was thinking? Why was he thinking the humans were the enemy? The front line of ten soldiers shook as the Darva lept crashing into them bowling the smaller humans over. Reskeme Stepped forward thrusting his naginata at the face of the Darva trying to tear the face of a soldier laying on his back.
His Weapon parted the fur, cutting the side and bouncing off the bone of its jaw, The Darvan warrior look up at him snarling in confusion. Reskeme felt it again, he felt the hate for the humans and even confusion at the sight of him. The moment passed, THe soldier beneath the Darva reached into his belt drawing a long straight knife and stabbing into the neck of the Confused Darvan warrior.
Feeling the rage again Reskeme yelled a battle cry, his burning anger towards the humans peaking, Reskeme focused on the groups of soldiers fighting. Carley stumbled in front of him staggering in the mud, two Darvan warriors charged into her slamming her back again their weight sending her tumbling backwards. Reskeme stumbled forward trying to help her, getting cut off by the third warrior charging after Carley. Reskeme was worried, out of the corner of his eye he watches Carley swinging and staggering back and forth trying not to be the one to get gutted first dodging the shimmering claws and teeth of the Darvan warriors.
Widening his stance Reskeme swung the long pole at the Darvan warrior, The warrior ducked the swipe and lunged trying to bite his hands. Reskeme staggers back slipping in the mud trying not to slip in the rain and blood-soaked ground. From His right he hears a high pitched scream, Reskeme glanced to the side and had to immediately defend himself the warrior immediately took advantage and dove at his feet.
Reskeme felt burning pain in his thigh as the warriors' claws parted his armour, he felt blood trickling down his leg and thrust his naginata the long blade gouging into the Darvan leather chest plate. Reskeme Channeled Mana Creating a rune on his naginata and thrusting the spear into the side of the reeling Darva.
Deciding it was worth the cost of a weapon Reskeme mana wrapping it around his weapon and watched the burning green fire burst from the Darvas chest. He willed the mana off his flaming weapon pushing it away from the smoking shaft and point. The Darvan warrior writhed on the ground thrashing wildly as reskeme stumbled back avoiding those vicious claws.
Reskeme turn the smell of blood thick on the air to see what that loud scream had been, the one that had almost cost him his life. Laying on the ground with steam drifting from his torn chest a soldier lay in the bushes clutching at his torn chest trying to stuff the guts back inside. Stunned Reskeme look around, only 5 Darvan warriors remained, bodies lay strewn about the clearing. He felt it in his gut, the long mournful howl, his ears rang the deafening note pitching much too high.
Staggering back Reskeme felt an emptiness a deep void in his chest a similar weight to when he lost his mother, the weight of loss. He felt hate and rage so deep he had to use every fibre of his being not to attack his own teammate. Hearing the pattern of running, he noticed 10 retreating warriors retreating after the scouts, one stopped at the edge of the clearing and look straight at him as if knowing he was different. Reskeme knew that he was feeling their emotions, he was sensing what they thought of the humans.
Reskeme walk towards the Darvan warrior which was now in the trees hiding behind cover watching him curiously, A human soldier was walking around stabbing his sword down and finishing off the wounded Darva, Reskeme felt a stabbing pain in his chest every time the soldier did that and ran over to the man stopping the killing blow on a Darvan scout, its White fire matted with Dark blood around its head.
Reskeme Yelled Wait, The man halted his killing stroke looking up confused at Reskeme. Pointing at another body further towards the center Reskeme put fear in his voice he said," I think That one is faking dead." He felt a slight relief cross his mind as the human warrior ran across the wet mud and grass before thrusting down into the dead Darvan warrior, Reskeme tried not to look as the Darvan scout stood shakily to all fours and ran as only a Darva could not looking back as it covered the distance to safety in astonishing speed.
His heart racing Reskeme look around, He hoped nobody had noticed the small white furred Darvan scout slipping out of the field of death through the pouring rain. He heard a shout and a thrum of a bow, but couldn't see if the arrow hit, He turns to find Carley Standing next to the captain, Reskeme walk over his arms feeling heavy grasping the slightly charred naginata.
In the Pouring rain, Reskeme had to shield his eyes from the continual damp, It appeared nobody but the lookout had spotted the retreating scout, at least they wouldn't have noticed him calling over the tall blood-soaked soldier. The soldier groaned next to him, He said," I'm going to be stuck on litreen duty for a month for letting that one get away," Glaring at Reskeme he walks away kicking the ground in discust.
Captain Aria said," Gather the wounded, and prepare the dead for when the army arrives!" Reskeme said," why did they attack us then retreat?" Captain Aria replied," The Darva communicate mind to mind, so when one dies they feel it, That is why when we ambushed them they recklessly attacked."
Reskeme thought he understood, He had felt the burning rage of the retreating Darvan warriors. Captain Aria waved towards the group walking down the hill, their distinctive longbows standing out. Once the two commanders arrive they stopped a respectful distance each glancing around the clearing. Captain Aria said," Sergents, keep on the watch, this rain is going to make a sneaking Darva go unnoticed."
The sergeants returned to their squads sending them in different directions spread out as the rain began to pour even more spreading the pools of filth everywhere. Carley stepped around red puddles up to Reskeme, he noticed her out of the corner of his eye. Reskeme stood under a tree, he watched as soldiers dragged their friends to the shelter of a large tree.
Carley noticed Reskemes haunted stare as he gazes over the small field, She said," It's never easy seeing your first large fight, the noise and screams will haunt you, the stench of blood and shit will be ingrained in your mind." Reskeme said," did you feel it?"Carley said," what, Did I feel what?" Reskeme stares at a warrior only 10 steps away, the corpse so lifeless yet still steaming from its wounds.
Reskeme winced from the pain in his leg and said," the rage and the hate, I felt it from the Darva as we killed them." Carley turns back to him stunned, She said," you can tell what they are saying to each other?" Reskeme sheepishly stares back at her, He shook his head no, He said," they don't use words like us, they seem to use feeling and maybe images." Scratching the side of his head reskeme felt he had blundered by saying that.
The soldiers were walking to each Darva and mercilessly stabbing them making certain, After the last one had escaped they were not taking chances, gritting his teeth Reskeme turn away looking from the butchery. At least he had saved that one scout, the small one with white fur, but still, it was all he could do not to attack these pesky humans.
Reskeme said," I think something is wrong, I feel what they are feeling even though they are no longer here, it's like once I felt their minds I'm still connected." Carley said," are you feeling them right now?" Reskeme said," yes, I feel one of them, I think its the last one that left, It seemed to single me out and looked right at me when they were running."
Carley frowned, Her face contorting in pain as she shifted from foot to foot. Reskeme noticed she was grasping her ribs, the Darvan warrior must have gotten her bad. Carley pretended all tuff, but he knew here well enough to know she was in a lot of pain, Reskeme tried not to show he noticed by turning back and trying to find dusty in all of the bustlings. He said," where is Dusty I completely lost track of him?" Carley shrugged her shoulder, She said," I have no clue, he was there one moment and then he was running to help fight off some pesky Darva."
His heart skipped a beat, A soldier Dressed in gouged leather armour was being dragged by two soldiers, Reskeme stares down at the unmoving cloaked figure. He reaches down, his hands shaking and pull the hood back, his breath left his chest in a whoosh of relief. Carley too sighed with relief, Reskeme glance up and notice that Dusty was walking towards them His bow in his hands.
Dusty walked into the protection of the large tree where Reskeme and Carley were watching over the soldiers collecting bodies, Dusty said," why do you two look so relieved?" Reskeme said," I was relieved I don't need to buy a new weapon," Holding up the slightly darkened naginata he smiled at Dusty. Carley said," and I found my knife I have been looking for this whole fight," Dusty stare at them his mouth partway open.
Dusty look around the clearing bodies, spread everywhere Dusty said," there are 10 of us dead and 20 darva dead, and you are happy you found your weapons?" Carley shrugged She said," a girl has to have her priorities, the bodies aren't going anywhere." Reskeme said," do you realize how hard I worked to get this naginata?" Dusty sighed he turn from the cover of the trees and walked back into the pouring rain his grumbling cut off by the downpour.
Carley said," something is wrong with this assault, There was no mage with this force and the warriors retreated much too quickly." Reskeme replied," What do you think they are doing?" Carley scowled her brow creasing in thought, She said," I don't know, but whatever it is we are not going to enjoy it." Carley stumble towards the Captain, Probably going to voice her concerns to the tired-looking Aria.
