Kapitel 28: The Humble Adventurer

"I'm here to turn in the [Hunt the Goblin Leader that's been hiding around near the city which is a pain] request. Receptionist?"

"Ahhhh, thank you very much, Phantom. That request has been sitting around on the quest board for a week or so. Nobody wanted to take it for some reason."

Will rolled his eyes from underneath the mask. "Who would want to accept this request when the reward is only so little? 1 Silver?"

The pretty receptionist avoided Will's eyes with a smile. "Ahahaha, what ever do you mean Phantom? The pay is just and fair."

Will scoffed. "I can earn 1 silver by hunting a few weak slimes in the dungeon. The risk there is way lower than hunting a Goblin Leader. You people need to increase your rewards."

"COUGH! I have no idea what you mean Phantom. A lot of similar quests with similar rewards have been completed recently."

An adventurer, who had been drinking a mug of beer while listening in on their conversation let out a loud laugh. "Come on miss Fiona, we all know that the only adventurer who completes such horrible tasks with such high risks and low rewards is that saint of a person in front of you called Phantom."

The receptionist called Fiona let out a kek however the adventurer continued.

"Let's see here... Phantom exterminated the hoard of slimes in the sewers the other month for ten coppers-"

"He gained a lot of money for cashing in the slime mana stones though," replied Fiona.

"We all know that slimes have a terrible drop rate for mana stones. His effort couldn't have equaled the reward he earned," retorted the adventurer, "besides the sewers are nasty."

"..."

"He also helped the orphanage out with their black rat problem for six coppers. Probably spent the entire week catching and exterminating those rats. My father, who was a farmer, used to say that if you can see 1 black rat, there are at least a hundred more under you."

"Kek."

"And now he risked his life to kill a goblin leader." the adventurer shook his head in disappointment. "The least you could do is pay the poor boy properly for his manual labor. Even I feel like donating money to him sometimes."

Fiona, who looked like she was about to cry, said, "it's not up to me on what the rewards of the quests are though..."

"Then complain to your guild master," replied the adventurer as he took a swig of his beer. "I'm pretty sure that many of us adventurers had sent multiple complaint letters to the guild master about the low quest rewards. Where the heck even is he?"

".... the guild master is out hunting for dragons."

The adventurer let out a snort. "Figures. It seems that his old age hasn't done anything to deter that old man's passion for hunting."

Fiona muttered to herself for a moment before handing over a silver coin to Will. "Here is your payment, Phantom."

"Thank you."

"Do you have a core that you wish to turn in as well?"

"Yes. It belongs to the Goblin Leader."

Will handed over the mana stone that he had harvested from the dead Goblin leader and waited for Fiona to analyze it.

"Although it is of slightly lesser quality, it has been confirmed that this is a core of a D Rank monster. I can give you 17 copper coins for it." Fiona placed the mana stone away before taking out seventeen copper coins which Will accepted with a polite "thank you."

Just as Will turned around to leave the adventurers guild, the adventurer who was drinking called out his name. "Oi, you. Phantom boy."

"Yes?"

As Will turned around to face the adventurer, the adventurer flicked him a gold coin nonchalantly before saying "Use this to buy yourself a nice meal. You deserve it for taking those shitty requests, not for greed, but to help others."

"It was nothing at all," replied Will.

"Don't be too humble," said the Adventurer as he finished his mug of beer. "Take what you deserve and spend it how you wish. Now go."

Will wryly placed the gold coin in his money pouch and left the guild with twice the amount of money he had when coming in. However, far from spending the money as the adventurer told him to, Will immediately went to the church instead.

As he came up to the church, he was warmly greeted by an old nun. "If it isn't Phantom again? Have you come again to play with the kids?"

Will shook his head and replied with a small smile. "Not today Sister Margaret. I've come today to make a small donation to the church, more specifically the orphanage."

The sister gave Will a happy and thankful look. "Oh my, you are indeed a sweet little boy. There are not a lot of people who donate to the orphanage on a common basis. May the gods bless you for their generosity."

"Oh it's nothing," said Will as he took out the gold coin from his money bag. Immediately, the old sister's eyes widened. She may have been old but the sister wasn't blind enough to be unable to recognize the distinctive color and shimmer of a gold coin. "By the gods... that can't be. Phantom, is that a gold coin?"

Phantom gave the sister a playful smile as he held up his finger to his mouth to indicate for the sister to be quiet. "Shhh, Sister Margaret. Let's keep it a surprise for the orphaned children, okay?"

"B-but how did you obtain such a large amount... and why would you waste it on our small orphanage?"

"It is my humble pleasure to serve the church," Will replied with a dainty bow.

"I can't possibly take this...." stammered the sister. "This is probably more than half of your entire wealth-"

"It's okay," said Will with a small smile. "Take it. Use it to buy new clothes for the children or to afford renovations to the church. To make life more enjoyable for the children."

"B-but why would you do such a thing?" asked the Sister with tears of gratitude starting to form in her eyes.

Will gave her a sad smile before watching the orphanage children playing around the church. "Let's just say that I sympathize with them and understand how it feels to be neglected by a mother and abandoned by a father."

"Oh you poor and generous soul," whispered the old sister with tears coming out of her eyes. "you blessed man."

"I am but an ordinary adventurer," replied Will as he placed the golden coin into the old sister's hands. "A humble man who has tasted freedom and warmth."

"May the gods bless you with all of their gifts," cried the sister to which Will replied with a twinkle of sadness reflecting off his eyes-

"May the goddess of the sea watch over all of these children for the rest of their lives."
