Jarvis slowed to a stop and his gaze lingered upwards. As he absorbed what he saw a pain hit his heart.
"No. . ."
A massive bird with lustrous purple and black feathers. Upon first glance such a creature would fill someone with warmth. Yet it took only seconds to realize what lay beyond such a feeling.
It was pinned to the wall with two large stone stakes. Each one through a wing. No blood dropped, a sign of how long it was imprisoned. Jarvis was filled with dread, such a majestic beast was being treated like this?
He stepped forward, and the bird's eyes snapped open. It flicked around to examine each of them, lingering a little longer on a select few. Then. . . a weak voice formed.
"You. . . What are you doing here?"
Jarvis was the first to respond, "I felt it, your cry for help."
"It's been a long time since then."
"I know, but I truly wish to help you."
"Foolish. You help something you not know of."
"I may not know you specifically, but I can tell you mean us no harm."
"Your senses betray you. If I could, I'd free myself and leave none to witness my escape."
Jarvis held out his palm, originally in a peaceful gesture. However it faintly began to glow, immediately gaining the bird's eye.
"Oh?"
Jarvis frowned and looked at his palm, "I uh. . . I just want to help."
"You. . . You who carries the mark of Origin. Tell me, what is your name?"
"The mark of Origin, you could tell?"
"I could not, rather you showed me did you not?"
"I didn't?"
The two stared at each other for a moment before Jarvis suddenly coughed, "I am Jarvis."
"Well then Jarvis, I must say your existence has been foretold for many an era. I had believed it to be a mere fairytale."
"I was told something like this before, what do you mean by that?"
"If you do not yet know then there is nothing I can say."
Jarvis shook his head, "It does not matter. I'm here to help. Let's pull those out."
"I wouldn't-"
Wrock jumped towards one of the stakes and reached out. Once his hand touched it an arcing red spark slammed into him and launched him towards the wall. It coursed through his body and made him periodically stiffen.
The bird clicked its beak, "Hasty, I dare say none of you can free me. The heresy that lay within these are too strong for you to handle. If a Second Stage could remove them I wouldn't have been trapped here for so long."
Wrock struggled to right himself, "Then how-", he paused to wince, "how do we free you?"
"You lack the strength, if you cannot handle this backlash then there is no chance of you freeing me."
"Lack the strength. . . ?"
Wrock grit his teeth. He did not perform the act of Rebirth a second time just to be told he still lacked strength. No, if anything he should no longer lack strength. Such backlash wouldn't even be a concern!
Spirit flickered across his body, blue embers lifted from his skin and captured the occasional crimson spark. These embers traveled across his body and towards his palm. Raising a hand he moved the embers to form a ball, and then crushed it.
"I don't lack any strength.", he corrected.
"Hm, I do not recognize the Phoenix that granted you this Spirit. Tell me, who was it?"
"You wouldn't know them. A great Phoenix of myriad color."
"Ha! I dare say I know of all the Phoenix to ever live. However one of multiple colors never existed. Even in legends!"
"I did tell you. That you wouldn't know."
"Even if you speak the truth, why is your Spirit of only one color? There is only one Azure Phoenix to have ever existed, and he passed long ago."
"I'm afraid what you're asking is a closely guarded secret. Besides you're asking for names but I don't even know you."
Jarvis sighed, "I do however."
This caught the attention of everyone. Including the bird. Jarvis pointed towards it and spoke, "The moon, it's the moon."
Tilia crossed her arms, "Naturally I will need you to be more specific."
"A mythical bird of legend, the Minokawa."
The Minokawa, a legendary bird said to be so large it swallows the sun. It was said that the reason for eclipses was this very bird. However such legends are exaggerated. After all eclipses are caused by the moon blocking the sun. Thus if the Minokawa was responsible for eclipses, it had to be the moon.
The Minokawa clicked its beak, "You are of some knowledge. But allow me to correct you. I am the last Minokawa of existence, and because of it I have inherited the title of Origin."
Jarvis lowered his eyes, "I know, the book told me."
Lifting the book manually, Jarvis flipped the pages towards the very end. On the last pages were sketches, unlike the beautiful drawings of his tames. Underneath them were incomprehensible scribbles. Perhaps of a language Jarvis did not fully understand.
"The Minokawa, the birds of the moon. It seems I was led here intentionally."
"That book is. . . ! Very intriguing. It seems you are of more than one legend Jarvis."
Clicking its beak with a hint of humor the Minokawa continued, "Yes, we once were. Prideful birds of the moon. But it was not of that title, rather we were proud of our duty."
Wrock's eyes narrowed. For just behind the bird a flickering image of the moon appeared. Such a visual trick reminded him of Spirit. A method to mark the chosen. However such a thing should only come from living creatures. He's never heard of Spirit being granted from inanimate objects.
A gleam of pride flickered in the Minokawa's eye, "Our duty was to protect the world. Under the guise of night when the world's most powerful weapon slept. We were soldiers. Hidden in the shadows to forever reflect the world's weapon.
"The Mirrors of the Sun."
"So that explains who you are, but not why you are here."
The Minokawa replied, "This is true. I had sensed a strong amount of heresy fluctuating here long ago. Upon my investigation I was caught and promptly trapped."
"An Origin creature holds strength beyond what we currently can wield. Does that mean there's nothing we can do to help?", Jarvis asked with a frown.
"Like I said, this happened long ago. The one who trapped me has long since left. To free me you must find the source of Heresy in this area and destroy it."
"And this source of heresy, any idea what it is?"
"No. I can faintly feel its presence, but I'm afraid I have no information on this matter."
Yielya raised her staff and a golden light shot forth. As it approached the Minokawa a crimson arc shot forth and shattered it.
"So that's really our only option.", Yielya muttered, "I tried targeting the stakes with my War Sight, but it's like they don't even exist."
"Like I said, you must rid the source of Heresy. That is the only way."
"Guess we have no choice but to scour the whole area then!", Yielya said with a roll of her eyes.
"I am sorry for my lack of help. It has been far too long."
Jarvis held up a hand in a 'stop' gesture, "Yielya, it's not their fault. Guarton is searching the ground, I'm sure we'll find something."
"What irritates me most is the lack of information. We're supposed to find this 'source of Heresy' but we don't have a clue what it could possibly be! Is it an item? A monster? Maybe it's a place?", she ranted
"It would be best if you stop this pointless rant. You have a far more serious issue to deal with."
"Don't get me started-"
BOOM-!!
A massive hunkering creature broke through the entryway. It looked like a golem of stone, but its body constantly moved and swirled like a liquid. Gear felt his heart thump so violently it made him sink to his knees. His eyes snapped to a quest updating to his right.
"The Chimeras. . . we left them alive didn't we?!"
Kan'na frowned, "Of course they're alive, none of the spells I made is meant to deal any damage."
"Well. . . the quest says all of them are dead."
<Warning!!!>
