"Ugh."
Yielya dusted off some dirt on her face. Scratching her head she fully examined the place she was in.
A set of ruins, ironic to say the least. Old yellow stone that looked like it would crumble if the wind was a little strong. She was placed directly at the entrance. Almost as if telling her to explore the place.
'How funny would it be if a continent traversing Artifact was in here?'
With such a thought roaming in her head she walked into the ruins. The darkness soon enveloping her. A light appeared above her, a small utility Skill she obtained a while ago. It was bright enough to allow her to see her surroundings.
It was mostly empty, as she walked through the place the only thing that was worth noting was the shattered jars on the floor. The damage was recent, for dust had yet to touch the broken parts.
The ruins had several rooms covered in dust. However they lacked anything of worth. Books far too destroyed to read, shattered pots, and old furniture. It would be very disappointing to those who entered the place hoping for treasure.
After realizing the rooms have been essentially pillaged by those who ventured before, she chose to continue going deeper. Instead of exploring the rooms.
She came across a deep hole. More specifically a ravine of some sort. There was a bridge to cross, but it was made of wood and collapsed. Such a large jump could be made by a brave adventurer with decent strength.
Yielya decided on a different way however. She lifted a small chunk of the pots and tossed it into the air. Using her staff she smacked the piece across the ravine and onto the other side. She spoke to no one in particular, "Homerun."
Tring~
Using her War Sight she swapped places with the chunk and successfully crossed the ravine.
Continuing down the paths she noticed a lot of the pots from before, along with rotten wood crates and various other items. These were not broken, giving insight on what the ruins were originally supposed to be like.
She soon heard faint breathing, it sounded labored and fading. As she approached the origins of the breathing she found an individual slumped in a puddle of blood.
The figure was wearing a tailcoat, beige in color. A satchel on their waist, and an additional bag next to them leaning against the wall. A pair of goggles were on their head, almost sliding off. Their skin was pale, deathly so. By the looks of things, they were clinging to their life.
They held a deep wound on their stomach, the source of the blood. Yielya approached them and spoke, "Say three if you're still alive."
". . . Tree?"
"Close enough."
She cast several healing spells, the wound closing and the individual's skin coming back to color. Their breathing became steady, and they soon became more conscious.
They examined themselves before looking at Yielya, "Thank you! You saved my life!"
Yielya merely nodded, "That I did, what caused this?"
"I stepped into a trap. Caught me by surprise, gave me that wound."
"So you're the one who was exploring this place?"
"It was me and a group of adventurers, I told them anything that was worth money was theirs. And I only wanted the historical objects."
"The adventurers?"
"The bridge, collapsed on us. Everyone but me fell. I was forced to explore ahead, hope there was another way out. . . Speaking of which, how did you get across?"
"Perhaps I'll answer that later. What were you looking for here?"
"History? I just wanted to discover what this place was for. A place like this so worn had to hold something of knowledge. I only found books beyond repair though."
"Hm, so what's your name?"
"Pennily, Pennily Wiseren. Archeologist of some sort, almost dead had you not come along."
"So then Wiseren, did you want to head back?"
"I. . ."
Pennily paused for a moment while she considered. Despite the fact she had nearly died, she desperately wanted to continue forward.
Yielya seemed to understand this, "Then let's continue exploring. I also wish to see what this place has to offer."
"Are. . . you sure? This place has traps, clearly deadly ones at that."
"I healed you after you faced such deadly traps right? Don't worry, I'm exceptionally careful."
"Then, if you want."
Pennily got to her feet. She dusted off herself and inspected her clothes. It seemed like the healing magic also removed some blood, so her clothes were okay.
She lifted her bag and placed the strap on her opposite shoulder, "I believe this place to be a couple hundred years old. The stone isn't cut out from any existing ones, rather it was created by some old method."
"So bricks?"
"Most likely, the yellow stains and excessive crumbling support this fact. But this location, it's almost in the middle of nowhere. There was no signs of villages or any civilization for that matter. It's almost like a dungeon."
"What else do you know?"
"That's all, I had hoped to figure out what this all was. Then you know the rest."
Yielya nodded and stopped, she spotted some blood on the walls just ahead. Pennily noticed it shortly after, "Ah! Be careful, this is where the trap was."
Two rings of a bell entered Pennily's ears. Then she suddenly found herself on the other side of the trap. She was baffled, "What? What was that? What happened?"
Yielya answered, "The way I got across the bridge."
"I see. Now that I think about it, for a place this close to complete ruin. It's a shock the traps are still functional. In fact it's a shock there is any at all!"
"Why is that?"
"Traps aren't common at all in ruins, except for those who are intentionally hiding something. Yet if they were hiding something, the traps would be far more dangerous and numerous. Moreover the place would definitely not be built using brick like this."
"So what do you think?"
"I think it's a bluff, meant to catch outsiders unaware. To deter people from continuing further."
"Well I guess we are about to see."
They soon found a pair of large crumbling stone doors. Pennily walked up to it and gently touched its surface, "Such heavy doors, you would definitely need some sort of external help, or sufficient strength to open these."
Yielya added, "Most likely the latter, perhaps it was guarded by the elite soldiers. Those with enough strength to open the doors."
"Yes that would make sense, but how are we to open this?"
"It's crumbling, we can just poke a hole through it."
"I mean I suppose, but that would take forever!"
Yielya tilted her staff and pierced a hole straight through the door with a single thrust. Pulling her staff free she peaked through the hole, "Hmm, this should work."
Pennily was too baffled by the unnatural strength Yielya showcased that she didn't notice the ringing of a bell.
She then suddenly found herself on the other side of the doors, "You did it again!"
"Yes, but I think you should focus ahead."
Pennily turned her gaze and was stunned by the sight. A wall of strange hieroglyphics, old paint almost completely faded. A good chunk of the wall was badly worn, completely removing any chance to read what was once there.
Yet Pennily focused on the existing marks, "This language. . ."
"You know it?"
"Faintly, I can roughly translate it, but some words may get lost."
"Oh? What's it say?"
"Let's see, this one says something about origin. This one about a creature of some sort. This is. . . prophecy? No, perhaps a message?"
Pennily murmured under her breath as she attempted to read the words. She then snapped her finger, "I got it!"
"Do tell, for I cannot read this."
"This is a warning, about a monster of origin. A calamity of some sort. The only thing I don't understand is the origin part. The direct translation would be origin monster, but what is an origin monster?"
"A monster that came first. One of a type in existence. The first of its kind, holds power far beyond that of any kind."
"An Origin Monster, how do you know this?"
"A friend of mine came across an Origin Phoenix."
"A Phoenix?! But those are incredibly rare to see! If what you said is true then an Origin Phoenix would be incredibly rare!"
"That it would be. So this message warns about an Origin Monster, but what kind?"
Pennily gestured towards the essentially broken wall, "I believe that is what this is about."
Yielya sighed, "So that's all we have?"
"Perhaps there may be more info around here, let's search among the rubble."
Pennily began rummaging through the fallen stone, looking for anything of information. Yielya watched her for a moment before picking up a random piece.
It held some somewhat clear paint on the other side, although it was a little dusty. Yielya called, "Found something."
Pennily stood up and walked to Yielya, "What is it?"
"Small piece, has some paint on it though. Might be readable?"
Pennily took it from Yielya's hands and inspected it carefully. She frowned as she read it several times over, "This. . . this makes no sense?"
"Hmm?"
"It's not a word. Maybe it's part of one?"
"Well what does it say?"
"Goju."
