Akiol opened his eyes, he was surrounded by pale yellow clouds.
Akiol was shocked, "Did I die?"
"Not quite.", A voice answered.
A figure walked into Akiol's view. Try as he might, Akiol was unable to discern the features of the individual. His eyes wouldn't focus on them, their figure was blurred.
He had an idea of who this was. Yet he still asked, "Who are you?"
The figure stopped and sighed, "The god of this pitiful planet. A dying one at that."
Akiol's eyes narrowed, "Dying? How does a god die?"
"My energy fades. My ability as a god fails me more than not. My name has been lost in history, none know who I am."
"Is that why I am unable to 'see' you?"
"Somewhat, however my time is limited."
"So. . . why am I here?"
The figure swept a hand and a table appeared, "Take a seat, this might take a while."
Akiol did as asked. The figure also sat down and took a breath, "In short, you were sent here with a purpose. I require your help."
Akiol was intrigued, but did not interrupt.
"To fully understand this, you must learn from the start. In your year of 2028, a set of individuals obtained a strange device. An object that even I was unaware of. This device was. . . tossed around. It's ownership changed hands quite often. For six months its owner changed. Each were drawn to it, only for them to be frustrated by its secrets. Every one of them were unable to learn these secrets, so they sold it off."
Akiol asked, "What is this device?"
The figure shook its head, "I have no idea what it is. I am only aware of its function. Even in my prime it escaped my vision. Its origins and name is unknown to me."
Akiol found this interesting. What object could hide from a god? So he asked what the object did.
The figure waved away the question, "We will get to that. After changing owners several times it landed in the hands of Billiam Thornwall."
Akiol's eyes widened in surprise, "You mean-?"
The figure nodded, "The CEO of Multimount Inc. The creators of the Virtual Reality Headset. At the time Multimount Inc was a moderately successful technology company. Using his connections he hired some brilliant people to figure out what the device was. Originally he had hoped for some foreign technology to boost sales with a new product. However the device held so much more."
The figure then pointed at Akiol, "It had the ability to draw out a human's soul."
Akiol was well aware of the dangers of having your soul tampered with. So this alerted him.
The figure continued, "Thornwall was. . . disappointed to say the least. He was blissfully unaware of what control over a soul could do. However he was then contacted by a certain organization searching for a partnership. They are called Horizon's Origins. This organization held great desire after the data of a human soul. They dearly wished to dissect one and solve what happened to a human after death.
Horizon's Origins partnered with Multimount Inc to create a special device capable of transporting a human soul. While they also created another company, the ones who are responsible for the creation of A World's Legacy."
Akiol wasn't liking where this was going.
"Six years of testing and development. Finally they created a compact device capable of wirelessly transferring a human soul. However they wouldn't be able to convince people to try it on. So they went a step too far. They purchased humans, used them for testing. Between the brains and souls of them, these were poked, prodded, and torn apart for their goal."
The figure sighed, "I was powerless to stop them, utilizing my power to forcefully interfere with the physical world wasn't something I could do."
The figure stopped speaking for a moment, relenting their own inability. They then continued, "They then found it, the answer they searched for. However it wasn't clear, it pointed them into a direction. They no longer needed souls, they needed an energy they emit when undergoing change. When a person develops mentally, when an individual's personality changes. These emit a bit of soul energy when such changes appear. Horizon's Origins required this energy, a lot of it. However causing a person to develop wasn't easy, they would need something life changing. So they turned to their developing team, they would have to take on a near impossible task. Creating a fantasy world that was fully immersive and creates opportunity for life changing events."
Akiol took a moment to digest this, "So the purpose of A World's Legacy is to harvest soul energy?"
"Correct, the creation of A World's Legacy was to provide life changing events to harvest more soul energy. Selling their device as a VR headset was merely a marketing move and excuse. They required more funds for their project, it seemed to lay in perfectly. However realism was a near impossible task by mere lines of code. So they created another device, a much larger version of the mysterious one. Inside it was a whole world, once a soul entered it would be given a new body. One that had a higher realm of ability than a normal human. They then separated it into separate parts. Each part was sent to a continent. Each of these parts are connected to a single point, in which the soul energy is gathered."
Akiol had many questions, but he waited.
"These devices held the same properties as the original one. Whatever it is, the gods have no sight inside. We have no control, nothing. I was helpless, until Timeon contacted me."
Akiol raised an eyebrow, "The god of time?"
The god held up a finger, "The god of time from your world. However you are correct, apparently he too noticed this issue. So we came to an agreement, once your team defeated the demon lord of your world. He would adjust the world you were sent to. So you came to this place. The bodies you overtook required a little teamwork of Timeon and I. I gave the original owners a notion to preorder a headset. Timeon then took this notion and sent it back in time. So by the time you guys took over, the headset would be there. I then gave you all the idea of joining the game, a little nudge towards joining it. So you may all join and take part of this issue."
Akiol held up a hand, "Hold on, you jeopardized our souls for this. Not only that but you sent us without informing anyone?"
The figure rubbed their temples, "This couldn't be informed. The process of your world is a constant movement. If our plans reached the other gods there was a chance they wouldn't let you go freely."
"So we were just shipped off like some product."
The figure shook their head, "An overly poor comparison. More like we stole you from your predetermined route."
Akiol frowned, yet he tossed the though aside for now. He was still angry, "Still! What about our souls?!"
The figure made a gesture to calm Akiol down, "Your souls shouldn't have been in danger, after all it isn't their goal to harm the souls providing the energy. No harm would be done!"
Akiol was still frustrated. The power and goals of gods was the one thing he was unable to fight against. He could stay calm in any situation because he believed their was a way out of it. However the gods was something he was unable to touch, "You said you gave us the idea of joining the game. What else did you do?"
The figure answered slowly, "Have you noticed that you suddenly started taking the game more seriously? I had to remove the thought of 'it's just a game'. For it's much more. I needed you all to take it far more seriously, so I gave some of you a slight change in thought. That's all I am capable of though."
Akiol wasn't entertained, "Why should I believe you?"
The figure sighed, "It doesn't matter if you do or don't. It took a lot of my power to bring you here. I sense I may fade away within a few years."
Akiol grit his teeth but did not ask further questions.
The figure was relieved and continued, "So I need your help. I can barely tell what takes place within A World's Legacy. I sense only you guys can put an end to it."
"Why? What do they plan to do with the soul energy?"
"They plan to use it to open a portal to what they believe is the afterlife. However the consequences will spell doom for the world I have spent my life dedicated to maintaining and protecting. I cannot watch this place suffer."
Akiol sighed and slumped in the chair, "We can't do much, we hold very little power in this world. It's built so tight with laws and such that we are prevented from doing such things. I don't know what you expect from us."
The figure shook their head, "No, the one thing Horizon's Origins have failed to notice. Is the power of a soul. I believe that A World's Legacy will show an opportunity to end itself. The power of a soul shouldn't be underestimated."
Akiol pinched the bridge of his nose, "So you want us to keep playing and find a way to stop A World's Legacy."
The figure nodded.
Akiol continued, "That can take ages! We may never get it done."
The figure held up four fingers, "Four years. Within four years I estimate they will have enough soul energy. You have that time."
Akiol frowned, "That's about twelve years in game. . . We might be able to find something out in that time."
The figure stood up, "I am glad. However time is just about out. So I shall give you a bit more information before you leave. First of all, you are not alone. I have my own person, however I shall not state their name. Your paths shall cross. Finally, you have been asleep for three days. Someone will contact you on behalf of A World's Legacy. Be sure to gather more information then. Other than that, I bade farewell. Do your best."
Akiol's vision blurred before returning to black.
