I was standing at the entrance of the Eiha Industry office. My friends and family are clapping for me and praising me. A man in a business suit walks out of the building holding a large cheque with my name on it.
Before I could receive it, pale hands with sharp red nails emerged from the ground and dragged me below. I tried to resist but it was futile. I watched as everything turn to dust while the hands pulled me below the surface where everything went dark.
I woke up and looked around the room. Nothing changed. Serith and Saliza were still sleeping. I feel restless despite having a few more hours of sleep than I normally get.
Today Reizo was assigned to investigate the bandit base at Kaku Mountain, wherever that is. According to him, he'll be doing it alone so that he doesn't have to deal with any liabilities. I am blessed with such a kind and loving captain.
We're free to do whatever we want for the day until Reizo gets back. I don't know what I should do, it's not like this world has any video games or comics I can read. I remember seeing a TV at the electronic store but I can't afford it. Even if I could, there's no space for a TV in the room I currently live in. I'm not even sure if there's anything good to watch.
I went to the library to see if there were any books I could read. All I could find were spell books and monster encyclopedias. Turns out most of them were written by Testra. There's a book store not far from the electronics store that might have books not related to ventgards and monsters, but I don't have enough money to buy any books. After paying for a surprisingly expensive spell book, I'm left with two dollars. The only way to get money is to do missions, which I'm too lazy to do.
I'm tired of all the fighting and I want to do a more peaceful mission like guarding the entrance to Feilo Fields or collecting resources, but Saliza would probably refuse to do those types of missions because she only likes missions that puts her life at risk. Without her, I might end up saying something stupid and accidentally expose myself.
I went to the cafeteria to get lunch as I pondered what I should do with this free time. I stared at the variety of food that's displayed while deciding which to add to my plate. I can only afford one of them so I have to pick carefully.
There's a tray with big square steaks that only costs two dollars. Maybe this world isn't as horrible as I thought it to be. "Good choice, this is good for building strong bodies." The lunch lady said as she placed a steak on my plate. Steak in this world is healthy? I think I'm actually going to enjoy my stay in errale.
I paid the lunch lady and took a seat to enjoy my first taste of meat in this world. I took a big bite out of the steak and expected to taste delicious and juicy meat, but instead, I got an incredibly bitter and sour taste that made me nearly puke. The taste is even worse than that of medicine. The inside of the steak was some sort of orange and dark green vegetable.
I was about to spit out the fake steak when I noticed the lunch lady watching me. I didn't want to hurt her feelings since she's been generous to me and giving me lots of rice during training so I forced myself to stomach the food and give her a thumbs up while covering my sickened face.
"Morning Zeigel." Saliza and Serith greeted me as they walked into the cafeteria and bought their breakfast. They also added more food to their plate since they didn't have to pay for damaged books.
"Since you guys are such good teammates, I'll share this delicious food with you guys." I mustered up a smile on my face and tried to give the fake steak to them. Serith politely declined and pulled his plate further away from me. "Gross, I'm not eating that. Why'd you even buy it in the first place?" Saliza also pulled her plate further away from me.
The lunch lady was watching me again and I took another bite and slowly chewed the food while pretending to enjoy it. The lunch lady smiled at me and walked back into the kitchen. Saliza realized why I bought the vegetable and started giggling.
"Let me guess, it looks like something delicious in your world." I nodded my head while struggling to swallow the food. Saliza scooped up two fat celery sticks on her plate and placed them on mine. She pointed at them with her spoon and gave a thumbs up.
I was hesitant to try it after the torture my mouth went through. I took a small bite and hoped that she wasn't trying to kill my tongue, and it tasted good. I gobbled up both pieces and thanked Saliza.
So in this world meat looks like vegetables and vegetables look like meat... this world is cursed.
Serith saw this and also offered me some of his food. He gave me something that looked like a meatball. I squinted my eyes at the meatballs and glared at him. "What? I'm just giving you some meat." I took a small bite out of the meatball to confirm what Serith said. It really was meat. Food is going to be so confusing for me to understand in this world.
"You should finish that." Saliza pointed at the fake steak and gave me a mischievous smile. "We should not waste food and eat everything that's on our plate."
While the lunch lady was not looking, I grabbed fake steak and burnt it to a crisp. "That was delicious." I faked a burp and wiped my hands.
After breakfast, I went back to my room and laid on my bed while wondering how I should pass the day. Maybe I should just nap until I'm forced to do something.
Saliza entered the room to see me laying on my bed with my eyes wide open. I feel tired but for some reason, I can't seem to fall asleep. "Serith and I are gonna go on a mission, wanna come?" She said while running into the bathroom to take a leak. I got up with my blanket still wrapped around me and walked to the bathroom door. "What's the mission about?"
"We're gonna go into a cave to get rid of a monster nest." I walked back to my bed and laid there again until Saliza came out of the bathroom. "Have fun on your mission." I waved at her and covered my face with my pillow.
"You can't just lay in bed all day. Ventgards need to be active and should always try to get stronger."
"I'm not a ventgard. I'm a victim of random portals who was forced to be a ventgard."
Saliza understood that I wasn't very keen about becoming a ventgard, but she didn't want to see me do nothing all day. "You know, since Reizo's teammate was also from earth, don't you think that he'll also act like you and refuse to do missions unless he's forced to do them."
She has a point. Let's just get this over with. I followed her as she triumphantly walks to the receptionist where Serith is waiting. We were told which directions to take to reach the cave that was in Feilo Forest.
The monsters we had to fight were called nedars, which are C rank monsters. They are fast four-legged monsters covered in red needle-like scales that they can fire at will. Their scales grow back at a very fast rate. These monsters shouldn't be in Feilo Forest so someone needs to get rid of their nest.
C rank monsters should be easy to deal with. We set out and followed the directions given to us. We reached a cave where the nest is located and went inside. We were immediately attacked by three nedars. They jumped around us and fired scales in all directions. Saliza and Serith dodged the attack while I got hit by a couple of scales. I was protected thanks to my new armor.
I never registered any skills into the skill slots of my new swords during our first mission since I didn't draw my swords when casting spells so I may as well do it now. I dashed towards one of the nedars and used twin steps to dodge its scales and slash its throat.
Earlier while trying to take a nap, I came up with a new spell when I remembered watching a show on earth called Single Part. I gathered mana into the blade of one of my swords and with one stroke I created an energy slash that flew towards two nedars.
The skill was similar to my energy ball but it covered a bigger area, moves faster, and hits harder. Of course, it costs more mana but my armor and weapons increased my max mana to 170 so I could afford to spend a little more mana in battle.
Saliza took on three nedars at once to test out a new skill she invented. The nedars shot scales at her as she gathered mana into her axe. Her axe ignited and she slashed through the scales and the nedars in a blink of an eye. She called this skill blazing rush.
Serith also had a new skill, though he didn't invent it. He shot a bolt of lightning out of his sword at a nedar.
We killed the monsters in a couple of minutes and our mission was done. Easy mission easy money. We scanned the bodies of the monsters.
*Scan completed, C rank monster added*
"That was fun, don't you think Zeigel." I shrugged and looked around the cave. There were two eggs placed on a nest. We should sell it for money.
As I approached the eggs, a portal appeared in front of me. It was different from the one that sent me to this world. A nedar jumped out of the portal and tried to bite my face off. I used twin steps and narrowly avoided the attack. I then used the second step to deliver a slash to the nedar from above.
A portal appeared above the nedar that teleported me away from it. "How is it doing that?" Serith asked. The nedar was slightly bigger than all the others and had a dark sinister aura around it as well as a scar at the side of its body where scales aren't growing.
"Are those the portals that sent you here?" Saliza whispered to me. "I don't think so. I don't remember the portal being magenta."
The nedar growled at us and created a portal in front of it. It rapidly fired scales into the portal. Portals surrounded us and scales came flying out all of them. Serith put his sword away and created an earth dome around us.
We could hear countless needles hitting the dome and cracks began to form around it. "The receptionist never said anything about nedars that can create portals." Serith said.
The portals that the needles are coming out of are connected to the one right in front of the nedar, so if we went through one of the many portals we'll reach the nedar. I told Serith what I had in mind.
He created a barrier and I held onto him. I used twin steps to burst through the dome while Serith blocked the needles with the barrier. I used the second step to blink through one of the portals and just as I predicted, we were teleported to the nedar. The barrier crashed into the nedar and sent it crashing into the wall.
Even with a broken jaw and a cracked skull, the nedar didn't back down. It created multiple portals and hopped through them while shooting us with scales. The attacks were fast, but predictable. I knew when it was going to jump out of a portal and into another one, but hitting was tricky due to its speed.
I waited for it to jump out of a portal and shot an energy slash at where it would create another and managed to kill it. The nedar dropped dread on the floor and the dark aura faded away.
Saliza checked the corpse and found something sticking out of the scar. It was a small golden disc with a magenta gem in the center. "I wonder..." she thought to herself.
She pointed the disc at me and Serith and created a portal in front of her and in front of me.
"Hahaha, this is cool!" She stuck her hand through the portal and it came out of the other one. Something like this is not possible to achieve by simply using spells. Whatever that disc is, it might be the key to getting me home.
"Let me see that thing." I approached Saliza and stuck my hand out. The dark aura from earlier surrounded Saliza and she feels a sudden burst of violence. She drew her axe and slashed my hand with it.
"It's mine! Don't you dare lay a finger on it!"
