Kapitel 132: Revelations

"Over there, everything is ashen and droll. The skies without clouds are only a single tear that extends for hundreds of thousands of kilometers; we call this tear the [Torn Heart]. The Torn Heart tirelessly pumped out a gooey liquid that eventually came to be called [Darkness]. At the bottom of the Torn Heart was a bottomless river of Darkness, its depths unreached, its reaches stretching across the world, or so others say.

"From this river rises Specks of Darkness, and, here, everything begins. This Speck of Darkness, at first, looked harmless, but it has instincts telling it to devour the other Specks of Darkness around it. The Specks of Darkness will consume as it aimlessly floats into the wasteland. It would eat and grow into a fist-sized wisp until finally into a shapeless black matter— a Shadow.

"Gaining the freedom to move, Shadows would begin trudging on the wasteland, no thoughts, only instinct, fueled by the desire to feed and satiate their hunger. But this hunger cannot be filled by Specks of Darkness, only other Shadows, and no matter how much you devour, it would never feel satisfying. It will continue to hunt until this sensation of void disappears. We will feed, eating to fill nothing but our lack of meaning.

"Eventually, a Shadow eats enough. And it would undergo a change. it would become aware of itself. At this time, hunger for other Shadows recedes; only their desire to be given meaning remains. Gossips, tall tales, folklore, Shadows listens for these, seeking the best stories to follow. Vivid stories would give one an idea, and they will morph to match the expectations of these whispers.

"We would start hearing them. Varying from one shadow to the next. But, they all start all the same. At first it would be an echo would reach a maturing Shadow. At first it would be but a faint whisper. Then it would become a murmur and it would become louder and louder until it is like someone is shouting next to your ears. These words would be repeated to us, over and over, and they would become the first things that we learn. Becoming a mark that would forever remain with us. Something we would follow akin to a doctrine.

"When the Shadow gathers enough, it will be fueled with stories; they will finally come alive. Flesh and blood that did not exist, will soon be created—that was how I and any other Shadows are born. I know how I came to be, at least how I devoured to survive and gain meaning. I lived, survived, and eventually learned that beings like us are called Black Spirits.

"I am the Wendigo, the Spirit of the Black Frost. The manifestation of those who have lost their minds to hunger in the mountains. A creature who craves the flesh of man… or so the echoes foretold. That is all that I know, now…." The Wendigo looked at Lilith. Its eyes were devoid of any evil desire.

It spoke of the knowledge it held near and dear to its heart. Something it would not speak of to the outside world, even if tortured.

But the Wendigo did not spare any detail. For its existence was in danger of being erased, 'This whole thing has been bizarre. To think she already knows this. It can't be that she can actually talk to the Absolute One, right? But if she can't then, how can she know something only a select few Black Spirits know an—wait… that smell.'

After listening to the Wendigo. Lilith was utterly shocked, 'I did not expect something like that to be true.'

But the proof was right before her eyes.

Even Alpha had no information regarding this Darkness. She too was surprised.

[There is no such thing as Darkness. But the High-Seraphs have not said anything, so we can only guess that it's real.]

Lilith was pressed for this information. She was satisfied… or so she would be.

'Alpha, check the Hell's Archive if they have anything on this so-called Darkness.'

[Okay, give me a second.]

Lilith was growing worried.

The fact that something even the Gods could not understand was a matter that refused to put her heart at ease. So, she fronted a grin, "Hooh, sounds like that Darkness place is quite something. But, even after all that babbling, you never said what you are or where you came from. Other than some vague explanation of where you came from, why don't you tell me something more concrete? Shadows? Darkness?"

The Wechuge bit his lips, "The exact truth is… no one knows."

"Are you trying to pull something here?" Lilith furrowed her eyebrows, "Do you think I'm playing with you? You have already played me so many times with useless information and you're hiding something this simple from me?"

"N-no! I would not dare trick her holiness. It's not just me, but no one knows the nature of our existence or our world! No one was interested in anything other than surviving that no one pursued the question of who they were. No one wishes to admit it, but many fear spending countless hours searching for an answer that may not exist. Even if we do find it, and just learn that we are, but a cosmic mistake is—"

The Wendigo halted his words, unable to accept the possibility of his own words.

A mistake? Who could accept being one? But, he did not say anything more.

'I can see where he is coming from. If his world is chaotic, then it is only natural that no one will have the time to go around investigating anything outside of survival…. how does it look, Alpha? Got anything on this so-called Darkness?'

[I did, and with our level 1 access to Hell's Archive, I cross-referenced whatever he's saying and I noticed something peculiar.]

'What's that?'

[That the Darkness does not exist. Well, there is an extensive list that took the name Darkness but nothing that coincides with what he told us. No reference, no mention of it. Hell's Archive is the culmination of knowledge brought to us by every soul in the Universe, yet, I got no word of its existence. The Hell's Archive is the most extensive library accessed only by a few existences, like the Gods and Goddesses of Knowledge, so nothing could slip their curious eyes. But, even then, I found nothing about this Darkness, much less Black Spirits. It might be because we only have low-level access, but there is not even a mention… that's weird. Try fishing out for more information.]

'I'll see what I can do, but do consider that, maybe, the thing about the Black Spirit and Darkness is expunged and is hidden in the very depths of the Archives. Or as you say, that our Access is too low.'

[I will ask around. I think the Librarian God Mimir is wandering around Hell's Archive. But to do that, I need to send my thoughts over there; I will still be connected to the System, but I need total concentration to send myself there so I won't be able to help you. So… you know… try not to die while I am away. I at least want to know how I die.]

Alpha's ability to leave Lilith's side did not erase their connection.

'Yeah, yeah, good luck out there.' Lilith didn't bother asking about the existence of a God and the other things Alpha let slip.

Alpha left for the higher realms while Lilith was left to collect information.

The Wechuge was only feeling the pressure of Lilith's silence, 'She had not reacted to anything I said, it is as though she expects the information I have, or is already aware of what I—'

His eyes were then drawn to Dhampy.

The undead remained still, her expression unchanging, but the Wendigo suddenly laughed.

"What's so funny?" Lilith asked, already ready to give the order to eliminate, "Remember that if you try anything funny, our deal is annulled, and I can kill you with a clean conscience."

"Are you still gauging how much I can tell you, Herald of the Beyond? Why not just tell me upfront that the Black Blood has already told you everything?" The Wendigo's laugh grew even wilder.

He had realized that the one next to Llith was its kind. It was faint, but the familiar scent of the darkness was overpowered by her daemon form. But, as they stayed in an enclosed space for such a long time, the Wendigo discovered Dhampy's true identity.

The Black Blood.

"Why aren't you saying anything? I'm right, aren't I?" taunted the Wendigo, "You've been playing me this whole time, haven't you? You must've known everything already. Heh, I hold something that even she does not know! How about that!?"

Lilith and Dhampy exchanged a look, and in that split-second window, Lilith created an entire scenario in her head.

"I—-"

"So the cat's out of the bag." Lilith made sure to cut off Dhampy from correcting the Wendigo, "Yes, she said some things to me. But I haven't been playing you. I will indeed free you if you tell me something I still do not know. I was acting to see if you have some information that I don't know just yet. I was planning on keeping the act for long, but now that you've realized this, I should stop playing as well. So, will you tell me something the Black Blood does not know or will you just die after wasting my time?"

"Heh, I now know what will interest you. Information that someone like the Black Blood next to you does not know, who escaped the Darkness earliest chance he got!"

Dhampy held onto her sword tightly, but she stopped her urge to shut the mouth of the Wechuge for her Boss' sake. But that was not all. A part of her also wanted to know what the Wendigo was talking about, 'It might have something to do with my unbalanced existence.'

She kept her hands at bay.

"Hooh, you seem really confident about this one. Look, this is the last chance you will get. The instant you mess this up, your life will be forfeited."

"I know, but I am sure that this information is something you do not know. I know who opened the path from the Darkness into this world… I do not know who it is, but I managed to see his soul when I peered in the direction of the [Torn Heart] and saw something I have not seen in the Darkness before… A True Mortal... A Human!"

"A Human?"
