Kapitel 14: INTERIOR OF THEIR LABORATORY

Mikael was surprised to hear that there would be a new member on their team of two heads so he could not help but asked Santina more about the other party.

"It probably slipped on my mind, but I remember it now... Wait, I thought he was not into this kind of thing, so how did he end up becoming your assistant???"

"He had grown fond of the kids living within the dumpsite and he was afraid that the next victim would be one of his students that was why he wanted to help us to solve the case as soon as possible."

When Mikael heard about it, he just nodded his head silently and after a while, he just asked where the other party was instead.

Since Santina had already decided about accepting Anton into the team, Mikael no longer questioned her decision regarding it.

"Oh, okay, so where is he by the way?"

"You just missed him. He was on his way to meet this girl he met on Tinder. Hot date, if you would ask me."

Santina replied with all honesty afterward without bothering to hide anything at all.

"Lucky guy then. At least he is someplace warm right now."

Mikael commented as he walked further inside the room.

Looking around the room, the first thing that one would notice was how almost everything inside it was painted with all white. White walls, white floors, white ceiling, white everything.

Also, if one would only pay closer attention, one would probably notice how the temperature inside the air-conditioned used to drop as one moved closer into the center.

It was because the room used to host a walk-in refrigerator with eight available drawers where dead bodies could be kept,

The place was already inhospitably cold, to begin with, but the bad weather only made it worst and colder than how it originally was.

Despite having only two heads working on the team, the laboratory where Santina and Mikael used to work at and conduct most of their researches was not in the very least simple.

From how they set up their high-ceilinged laboratory, it was obvious that they really put careful attention towards the details of the interior of their room.

On the wall opposite the door where Mikael came in, was a huge whiteboard that was some four feet high by six feet wide and walking across the room, there were two empty skeletons of gurneys that were pushed to the corner and just above it was stainless shelves that were suspended from the sturdy brackets on the wall.

Their shiny stainless steels were the only color that contrasted the almost pure white room.

A few feet away from where the gurneys and shelves were located was their workstation which included a computer table as well as bookshelves and cabinets all made from a cherry-oak wood.

At the center sat the main centerpiece of the workstation itself which was a brand new Compaq Presario Q2159 with a 21.5-inch wide-screen monitor. One of the many aids that they had received from Officer Aragon throughout the year of trying to solve the case.

This monitor served as the heart and brain of their research because they made used of it among other things to construct a photogrammetric three-dimensional skull-photo also known as a photo superimposition which was proven to be very helpful in assisting the identification of the dead.

A tasked that used to be a tedious job for forensic anthropologists before the advanced computer technology had made it simpler.

With the help of modern technology, the method of superimposition was made possible where various computerized 3D images of skulls were superimposed onto various photographs of missing people taken while they were still alive, in case there was a suspicion that the skulls in question belonged to them.

Other than those pieces of equipment, some of Santina's most prized items were also put on display.

A tempered ceramic model of a human torso with removable and vividly colored polyurethane organs stood upright on its cut-off thighs at the small table located at the far end corner of the room.

That one was a gift to her by an old acquaintance that used to work on a firm that specialized in casting anatomical models for medical schools.

A clothesline that stretched across to the other side of the wall could be seen not too far away from where the model of a human torso was situated

It was garlanded with strips of photographic negatives that Santina had personally processed in the small dark room off to one side of the laboratory.

While on the other end of the wall hung the huge four foot high and glass -framed reproductions of four of Leonardo da Vinci's drawings that depicted his fascination with anatomical studies.

His drawings of organs of the thorax, the heart, and the main arteries, the profile studies of a skull facing left as well the principal female organs were all done with a quill, ink, and red chalk.

Kapitel 15: THE CLOSEST THING TO SEX

Meanwhile, aside from the stuff that they usually use in the case, some of Santina's personal collections could also be found sitting at a shelf located at the far end corner of the laboratory.

A whole row of the shelf was specifically devoted to sealed specimen jars that came with different sizes all with sun-dried discolored bits of unpleasantness floating in them.

Some of them were organs which one would probably better off not imagine how it was acquired at all. There was even one hardly recognizable content on one of the jars that Santina had preserved in formaldehyde.

Some remnants of botched deliveries and abortions could also be seen floating in one or two fluid-filled glass jars.

These used to be displayed in her classroom back at the med school where she taught for a living, but as though having some sort of affinity towards these weird, unhinging jars, Santina decided to take it with her and put it in her workstation.

The jars demanded attention and it never failed to get one, no matter how hard one tried to avoid looking at them

Most people might find staying inside the same room with those particular collections of hers a bit unsettling but to Santina, it was her ball of light; source of comfort, and peace.

Depending on Santina's mood that she happened to be feeling at a particular moment, she would often wrap her long fingers around a particular jar and sometimes even propped it up on her chest just so she could stare on its contents properly.

Analyzing every veins and muscle and its membrane for hours to end.

Some said that every genius has their own signature quirk and that seemed to explain Santina's weird and out of the box fascination with those jars.

Going deeper into the room, one could note the faint smell of formaldehyde and other chemicals.

But on that particular night, Mikael could not help but noticed that aside from the familiar scent of preserving chemicals that usually permeated the entire room, the odor of decay that was usually undetectable on normal occasions became relatively stronger and assertive.

Nonetheless, Mikael just decided to turn a blind eye and no longer bothered himself about that oddity.

Or much accurate to say blind nose???

WHATEVER!

Anyways!

So while looking around the room, Mikael also could not help but strained his ears so he could understand what was the alien song that was being played on the loudspeaker all those times.

He briefly listened to the music and after a short while he rolled his eyes and snorted.

"Seriously? BTS???"

He paused to identify the song then he groaned and looked at Santina with an upturned eyebrow.

"Boy with love???"

Santina chuckled upon seeing the reaction on Mikael's' face. The crow's feet, or as to how they called it, appeared from the corner of her eyes. A clear indication that she was a woman who loved to smile often.

"Aye, yes and I must say, there is hope for you yet. You were not that boring as how you seemed to be on the surface. At least you know BTS!"

She replied to humor at the other party.

Mikael, on the other hand, fiddled with the volume control knob until he was satisfied.

Even after working together with Santina for nearly a year now, he still could not get used to the other party's quirk of performing autopsies while listening to very loud music, with lyrics he could bet that Santina mostly did not even understand.

"You're too old for this, Professor."

He commented as he bent over to observe the stack of BTS merchandise that surrounded the stereo component system.

Santina raised her head to looked at Mikael. She was already wearing her surgical mask so all that Mikael could see that time was her eyes and not her reaction.

"There is no such thing as an age when it comes to fangirling and it is a lifetime calling, okay. But since you are not an ARMY yourself, you probably would not understand no matter how hard I try to explain myself. By the way please don't mess with my babies."

When she said babies, she was referring to the items printed with the face of the Bangtan Boys.

"They were the closest thing to sex that either of us would ever get"

She added without even bothering to filter out her words.

Mikael feigned a shock reaction when he heard Santina's vulgar words. He opened his mouth widely as though a fish that had fallen off the shore.

"Reprobate!"

He said with a gasp.
