Kapitel 71: Chapter 71 - The Golden Globe Awards

The Golden Globe Awards ceremony was broadcast live on ABC television. The crew of Home Alone was arranged to enter right after the crew of the most nominated movie, Rain Man. After being directed by a staff member, Eric took to the red carpet with Drew.

Mocked by some media as the most business-minded awards ceremony, the red carpet of the Golden Globes reached only a dozen meters. This is quite small, compared to the more than 200 meters of red carpet at the Oscars.

After they entered the reporter's area, Drew who was gently holding Eric's arm until then, suddenly changed her posture and leaned against him, just as the reporters started taking pictures. With both wearing beautiful clothes made by Versace, it made the two of them look like a couple.

The reporters in the media area showed excitement and the frequency of flashing lights increased a lot. If this was not the Golden Globe Awards ceremony, these reporters would have already started asking about the relationship between the two of them. Eric was numb to Drew's machinations. The girl was always trying to seize any opportunity to imply that they were a couple, in ways that do not touch his bottom line.

After taking the pictures, the two of them were supposed to go directly to the venue but were stopped by a reporter from ABC. They did a quick and pointless interview, where he was asked some irrelevant questions, such as his feelings to be participating in his first Golden Globe Award ceremony ever. Of course, ABC's reporters were unlikely to ask anything sensitive in this event. As long as this young miracle Director shows his face, they will get more ratings.

After the interview, as he was entering the venue, Eric inadvertently glanced behind him. He was surprised to find the Runkle couple still standing in the media area. Because they were taking too long, they had to be reminded to move on by the staff. Eric once again felt a hint of disapproval. The Runkle couple was eventually going to pose a real problem. Eric made up his mind to find the time and talk to Stu. Stuart was more mature than his past life's Macaulay Culkin. He may listen to his advice and not be at his parent's mercy, and end up going astray like the original Macaulay.

The Golden Globe Awards ceremony takes the form of a formal banquet. The 'Home Alone' crew is placed at a table in the second row from the podium.

"Stu, come and sit by my side." Eric sat down and beckoned to Stuart.

The boy glanced at his mother, stood up, and turned to Eric. The Runkle couple showed a faint trace of disappointment. If their son left their side, they certainly would not show up on TV.

At five o'clock sharp, the Awards ceremony officially began. The host Morgan Fairchild took to the podium.

"Good evening everyone, looks like there is a misbehaving kid among us tonight."

The first sentence was a joke at Home Alone. With a burst of laughter, the live camera quickly switched to Eric's table. Eric smiled and waved to the camera, while Stuart with his innocent big eyes looked curiously at the camera. Morgan was suddenly mock-irritated: "Hey, Stuart, look at my shabby suit. I prepared three sets of suits. The first set got butter poured on it, the second set was dyed black, and the last set was covered with feathers. What do you have to say for yourself?"

There was a burst of laughter again at the scene. Some people even showed empathetic expressions. Many of the celebrities with children, were victims of Home Alone. In every region the movie was released in, children imitating Kevin's mischief had become a trend.

This time, Morgan did not wait for Stuart's response and turned the subject to another topic: "OK, just kidding. Let us look at the stars present tonight."

In the next five minutes, Morgan's commentary ridiculed every movie that was nominated but rarely mentioned any TV series. Although the Golden Globe had been awarding TV awards since 1956, this era's TV actors did not yet have a status that might equal movie stars, like it would 20 years from now. Now, even their seats were in a corner where it was hard for the camera to reach them.

Like many other awards ceremonies, the Golden Globe started by announcing the less important awards. Eric, like most people, paid little attention to what was happening on the stage, only smiling at the camera when it swept in his direction. The rest of the time he was having a whispered conversation with Stuart.

Stuart was a talent he discovered. Now, the fate of the boy had become entangled with the hustle and bustle of Hollywood.

Unlike the previous Drew and his past life's Macauley Culkin, Eric very much hoped that this clever boy can embark on a healthy career path.

Therefore, Eric patiently explained to Stuart the precautions to be taken in the entertainment industry. Although the boy showed a confused expression sometimes, he listened very carefully. With Stuart's IQ, although many things could not be understood in the immediate future, as long as he kept the words in mind, then there would not be a problem.

After some time, Eric finally heard a nomination for his film and stopped talking to turn his attention to the host.

Susan Sarandon was nominated for Best Supporting Actress for her role in 17 Again. The other nominees were Sigourney Weaver for Working Girl, Lena Olin for The Unbearable Lightness of Being, Barbara Hershey for The Last Temptation of Christ, and Diane Venora for Bird.

Eric remembered that Sigourney Weaver had won this award in his previous life. The reason he remembered this was that the forty-sixth Golden Globe Awards was the most special one in the history of the Golden Globe. Not only did it make a splash, but it also awarded three best actresses in a leading role simultaneously.

Sigourney Weaver also became the first woman in the history of the Golden Globe to win both the Best Lead Actress and the Best Supporting Actress awards.

The presenting guests introduced the several nominated actors, took a look inside the envelopes under the eyes of everyone, and bent to the microphone to say, "The winner is Sigourney Weaver, Working Girl."

When the applause sounded, Sigourney Weaver excitedly stood up and hugged a few of her crewmembers, before she took to the stage. Susan Sarandon who was sitting near Eric showed a disappointed expression but responded with a smile to everyone comforting her.

Eric had long anticipated this result. Both 17 Again and Working Girl belonged to Fox. However, 17 Again had been released for nearly two months, while Working Girl was released for less than three weeks. For the influence of the awards on box office, the public relations department of Fox would definitely choose the Working Girl to win.

As for Sigourney Weaver's performance, who cares?

During Eric's trip to New York, Working Girl had just been released. Aniston and he deliberately went to watch it. It was a standard chick-flick movie and was very similar to his previous life's The Devil Wears Prada. The plot is, a newcomer to the workplace, under the guidance of a harsh female boss, changes herself step by step. Through dramatic changes in appearance, she completes her transformation and emerges like a butterfly from its cocoon.

In The Devil Wears Prada, Meryl Streep plays the role of Miranda Priestly, the icy editor-in-chief of Runway Fashion Magazine. Compared to her, the performance of Sigourney Weaver in Working Girl as the female boss was not worth mentioning. He estimated that when people saw her performance, they would only remember her previous performance as 'Alien Queen'.

He felt it was ironic that the supporting actresses of the two masterpieces, The Last Temptation of Christ and Bird lost against a commercial film. Obviously, the Golden Globe results relied heavily on public relations. With this conclusion, Eric's two nominations for Home Alone had no hope of winning.

Eric did not conduct any public relations activities for Home Alone earlier. On the one hand, he did not have the kind of network required and Colombia and CAA were unlikely to take the initiative to do it. On the other hand, even if he spent great efforts to get the awards, the box office influence on Home Alone would be negligible. The pre-teen children watching his movie wouldn't care about how many awards the movie won. The ones influenced by the awards were all basically adults.
