The sterile room hummed with the soft beeping of monitors as Alan let out his cries. Lin Que stood by the door with Lily in his arms. HIs heart felt heavy seeing his best friend in this condition.
A few staff members wanted to interrupt Alan, but Lin Que raised his hand to block their path. "Hold on. Let him say goodbye. Give him some time."
The doctor and staff hesitated, but Lin Que's gaze remained unyielding. Finally, the staff nodded and exited the emergency room to give them privacy.
Alan muttered, "no. I don't believe this. I don't believe that you're dead. You promised that we would grow old together."
Ginny lay motionless. He started scanning the machines around them and felt as if a dagger had stabbed his heart when he saw the flat line on the heart monitor display. "No, I won't accept this."
He clenched his fists, took in a deep breath and slammed his fist against her chest. "Fight for your life. Please, come on!"
At this point, Lin Que had left Lily by the entrance and grabbed a hold of Alan. "Alan! Stop it! She's g-"
It was at that moment when their eyes focused on the heart monitor. Everything went silent. Then, a series of blips disrupted the silence. A heartbeat emerged from the monitor.
"Ginny?" Alan breathed and loosened from Lin Que's grip. The machine registered a rhythm that was steady. Her chest rose and fell with a faint breath.
Immediately, Lin Que brought the doctors back in and hurriedly pulled Alan out of the room. The doctors were surprised and quickly continued operating on her.
After a dreadful wait, the doors swung open once again. The doctors removed their masks with a fatigue smile on their faces. "It's a miracle. We managed to stabilize her condition. There were some complications, but we were able to address them in time. She lost a lot of blood and is still weak. We'll have to monitor her closely for the next few days. She will have to remain hospitalized until her recovery progresses."
"Thank you..Thank you..Thank you so much. Thank you, doctor...Thank you!" Alan held the doctor's hand tightly. "Can I go see her? Is that okay?"
"Yes, but she is still in recovery. She won't be fully conscious yet, but you can talk to her. Your voice might help her." The doctor nodded and moved out of the way for him to see Ginny being wheeled out.
A rush of gratitude swelled in his chest. "Yes, I will do that. I will let her know I'm here."
As they followed Ginny to her room, Lin Que walked beside Alan to make sure he was alright. He reassured him, "Ginny is a fighter. She made it through the hardest part. Thank goodness you didn't give up on her."
"Y-yeah. I just don't want to lose her again. I was so terrified. I've never ever been this afraid before. I am so glad she is okay." Alan choked as he confessed his feelings. His body was still tense from anxiety.
After the staffs left them alone, Alan walked to Ginny's bed. He sat down quietly and took her hand into his palms. They're warm, unlike the coldness from earlier. "Ginny, it's me, Alan. You've made it. I knew you would. You've fought so hard. Thank you for coming back to me." He whispered.
For a moment, silence enveloped them. Only the sound of machines could be heard. Alan squeezed her hand gently, feeling the strong pulse within her. "You're going to be okay. I'm going to be right by your side when you wake up. I'm right here."
Lin Que turned his attention to Lily, who was trembling in his arms. He rubbed her shoulder and accompanied her out the room. When they reached his office, she threw herself into his arms and tightened her warms around his waist. Her fists wrinkling his shirt.
He stroked the back of her head and whispered, "she is alright. She is alive. Baby, everything is alright. Don't keep it in. Let it out."
"I really thought she was gone..I was really scared. I thought we lost her. I was so scared.." Without anyone's disturbance, Lily cried in his embrace. She cried with all her energy as he comforted her.
"Let it all out. You're safe now. You're alright." He repeated to her ears as she released her emotions. She had been bottling her fear for some time now.
After some time, Lily felt exhausted from crying and fell asleep on his couch. He covered her with a blanket before exiting the office to make a call.
Although things had gotten crazy for the last few hours, Lin Que still knew about the attacker's death. "I don't believe in coincidences. And I surely won't let anyone who has ill intentions go either." He spoke to one of his connections who were superiors to the detectives from today.
"What do you want?" The person asked, waiting for Lin Que to clarify his words.
"I want an answer. Look into Jiang Meng Meng and see if she has any suspicious activity. All her emails, bank transactions, text messages..everything. It better not be her, but if it is..." His voice trailed off.
"Alright, I understand. If anyone asks, I did not hear anything from you, especially that last part. I know nothing. Understand?" The man coughed jokingly, trying to ease the tension. Though Lin Que was younger than him, he always felt this man could suffocate someone over a single call.
"Thanks." Lin Que ended the call and finally took a deep breath. Though he appeared to be the calmest, he was struggling internally as well. Only he knew how his heart had nearly stopped upon seeing the bloody scene. Even though Lily was safe, he couldn't help but feel the fear of losing her.
After calming down, he made another call. "Give me that man's autopsy report."
