Kapitel 5: Fainting
As Red calmly began sprinting faster, he eventually came quite close to Goutou, who was sweating while running with might. All the other students were watching in shock as they saw Red leisurely pass Goutou.
Goutou who had been focused on running fast, suddenly saw a shadow pass by him. He turned his head to see that it was the new transfer student, Red. His form was perfect and his pace seemed like a breeze. There wasn't a drop of sweat on his face.
Goutou clenched his fists and increased his speed and began running faster and faster, once again regaining a lead. Turning his head he saw that Red was not improving his speed to compete at all, there was just a smile on his face.
Goutou regained his calm and maintained his lead, however, he realized that no matter how he changed his speed, Red would remain exactly 5 meters behind him. This put a lot of pressure and he began increasing his speed again.
After eight laps, this kind of high intensity running took its toll on Goutou. Whenever he increased his speed, he would pull a few meters ahead, but over time it would again reduce to five meters. Yet there wasn't a single bead of sweat on Red.
Meanwhile Goutou was drenched and panting. His body was numb and sour, stinging from the lactic acid build up and his chest thumped so hard he feared it would burst. At that moment, he saw Yui looking at Goutou with eagerness and determination and hope.
"I can't let her down! I have to win!" Goutou gritted his teeth and began running with a renewed determination, powering through the intense tiredness.
All of a sudden Red increased his speed and came at line with Goutou, looking at him with a smile. Although Red's face were genial, but his eyes were cold. When Goutou saw how easily Red came up to him and the cold smile, he felt a threat.
"No! Is he doing this to gain Yui's attention? I must not let him win at any cost!" Goutou's eyes turned red and he grit his teeth hard amd began running as fast as he could in his life without looking back, even if it rapidly expended all his stamina. He could not let Red win!
Without looking sideways anymore, he sprinted off like he began a 100 meters dash, each step wobbly and he began feeling dizzy, but he couldn't give up at this moment.
As he crossed the ninth lap, the dizziness increased and his chest hurt. His breath was choked and he was wobbling around the track. He didn't see any sign of Red and turned his head to see that Red had fallen way behind, chatting with his deskmate Rin!
Goutou was stunned! Wasn't Red competing with him? The shock suddenly made him lose all his will and his eyes rolled up as he fell onto the track. He had fainted.
Everyone who saw that were stunned. Goutou fainted? Why did he try to run as a madman? What happened between him and Red?
At that moment Yui suddenly shrieked. "Goutou! Are you okay?" As she ran towards the fallen Goutou. Even the teacher was stunned. Suddenly Yui tried to shale Goutou awake, but he didn't respond at all and his breath was erratic.
Suddenly, Red appeared and picked up Goutou on his back. He looked at Yui. "Miss Yui, can you point me to the infirmary?"
The teacher nodded. "Good. New student carry Goutou to the infirmary. Yui lead the way for him."
The other students just looked at each other in shock.
"What happened to Goutou today? He ran so hard and fainted!" Someone asked loudly.
"Something happened between him and Red. Didn't you see Red had reached him, but then suddenly pulled back and Goutou ran like crazy."
"Goutou and Yui are always in their own world. Today when I was asking Red questions, I heard them discussing how to ignore him!" A girl whispered, but everyone heard it.
The others shook their head. "Let's hope Goutou is fine."
Meanwhile, Red calmly carried Goutou and followed the panicked Yui, entering the infirmary. He quickly lay Goutou on the bed as the nurse came in a hurry.
The nurse was actually quite young and cute, though she gave off a serious and depressing atmosphere.
"What happened to him?" She grumbled.
"He seems to have over exerted himself during Physical Training. Ran too hard." Red replied back in fluent japanese, which surprised the nurse.
"Oh... I'll give him a glucose IV. His vitals seem fine, he just fainted from exhaustion." She said, her tone much gentler.
Meanwhile Yui, who had tears in her eyes rubbed her face and wiped them off. The nurse said that Goutou needed quiet rest and both were shooed off.
Both Red and Yui stood outside the infirmary in the waiting room. Red quietly went to the water cooler to take in a glass of water.
"Miss Yui, do you want a glass of water?" He asked her.
"Hmph." She snorted in anger as she ignored him.
Red had a bitter smile on as he simply sat down on the sofa. Suddenly Yui began tearing up again.
"What did Goutou do to you? How can you be so vindictive? You caused him to faint! What if he got hurt!" Yui asked as she looked at Red, anger evident in her eyes.
Red looked stunned. He shook his head and sighed. "Miss Yui, I didn't even get the opportunity to interact with Goutou. I just transferred to class, why would I do anything to him? More over you saw with your own eyes." He said with a 'sad' tone, a hint of pain in his voice.
When Yui heard the changes in his expression, she suddenly felt like she made a mistake. She suddenly thought back to what happened. Red had never intended to compete with Goutou at all, instead he was helping Rin with her running posture. It was the teacher who told him to run, even then he only slowly improved and didn't show any hostility or pride.
"Why did you suddenly run towards Goutou and then retreat? Something had happened at that moment!" She said with a voice that was clearly unsettled.
Red shrugged. "I don't know myself. You yourself saw that I wasn't trying to outpace or rub anyone the wrong way. The teacher suddenly asked me to run faster, so I gradually increased my pace, and then when I reached Goutou, he looked at me with an intense hatred.
I have never seen anyone look at me with such viciousness in my life, and I didn't expect a classmate to be that way towards me on my first day. I was unsure if I behaved rudely in some way so I returned to the middle group, slowed my pace down. Then Goutou suddenly fainted." Red sighed.
When Yui heard that her body trembled. She suddenly remembered the momentarily fierce look on Goutou's face. During the laps, her eyes were mostly on Goutou and Red, and she realized that Red did not lie. Goutou had indeed looked at Red with intense hostility and he immediately slowed down.
Suddenly her heart cooled down. "Is that how Goutou really is? Is his behavior towards me a facade?" A seed was born in her heart.
She looked at Red. "I'm sorry, I accused you of unpleasant things." She said with regret.
Red shook his head. "You don't need to apologize. I can imagine you are worried about Goutou and its not unusual to suspect me in such a situation." He said, looking truly embarrassed.
Yui felt shameful. When Red had entered the class, his gaze had lingered on her for more than a moment, and she instinctively behaved very coldly towards him. However, she now realized that Red was really an understanding and gentle person.
