Kapitel 22: Is This Hunting?

I woke up from the best night's sleep I've had since arriving on this world. Stretching out my arms and yawning widely, I mentally prepared myself for the day.

Crawling out of my crude shelter the predawn light greeted me. Embers were all that was left of my fire, and I noted with satisfaction that the wolf hide was still securely in place in the drying wrack. I made my way over to the pond and washed my face. I refilled my waterskin and walked back to the embers left from my previous night's fire.

I quickly rebuilt a fire, and once it was ready I started grilling a wolf steak for my breakfast. My mouth started watering as the aroma of the sizzling meat greeted my nose. I could barely wait for it to finish cooking, but I was able to restrain myself in the end. Once it was done I immediately inhaled the still hot steak, burning my mouth in the process. I ended up eating another steak and cooking five more; stowing them in my inventory for later.

The largest sun had just peaked above the trees as I finished cooking. I equipped my quiver, daggers, and sword. My grimoire was at my hip as always, holding my damaged bow in hand I walked into the shadows of the forest. It was time to try out my new spells.

As I made my way carefully through the forest, I kept my eyes peeled for any wolf tracks and any creature that might try to sneak up on me. I had learned my lesson already; I would never make that mistake again.

It wasn't long before I found my first target it was that weird badger squirrel creature I had seen on my first day here. It was on a low branch about 20 yards in front of me, I started to focus on it until I finally received the information I was looking for.

<Badger Squirrel (lvl: 5): HP 145>

I was surprised at this weird hybrid's level, and its health was high as well, but that didn't stop my plan one bit. I focused on casting Radiant Arrow and aimed for the creatures head. As I cast the spell a light condensed in my right hand and before I knew it the animal fell off the branch and I received a notification.

*Ding <You have slain Badger Squirrel, 240 experience gained>

"What the hell?" I muttered in surprise, I pulled up the damage log as I walked to pick up my kill.

<You attack Badger Squirrel, dealing 188 critical damage>

188 damage from one spell, netting me 240 experience... Too bad this spell had a one-minute cooldown. Looking at the body of the now dead critter I saw a neatly burned hole that went straight through its head. No wonder it only took one hit.

Placing the kill in my inventory I started heading further into the woods. I quickly found a black fox; it was finishing a meal of a two-tailed rabbit.

<Black Fox (lvl: 4): HP 135>

Radiant Arrow was still on cooldown, so I decided to try out a few new spells. I first cast Earth Armor and Minor Haste buffs on myself. I then cast Tangle on the fox, the vines were as fast as vipers and quickly had the fox stuck in place. Before the fox could react I quickly cast Rock Spike directly underneath it. The fox yelped in pain and began fighting harder against the vines ensnaring it. Not relenting I cast Fire Dart.

8 darts of fire were summoned in front of me, I lost a few seconds in shock at the number of darts. I was only expecting 1 dart but instead I get 8. I need to figure out what caused this later. While I was stuck thinking about the strangeness of my fire spell the fox was able to get free and was running towards me. Blood lust and hatred was clear in its eyes, I quickly aimed and fired the Fire Darts at the fox. The fox was able to dodge 3 of the bolts, the other 5 managing to strike it.

The fox jumped at me with its jaws open wide, I quickly cast and fired another 8 Fire Darts directly into the things open mouth. The fox was stunned but was still alive, its was no longer able to control its lunge but I wasn't able to dodge in time and it's body slammed into me.

<Damage received: 0 (-10 Earth Armor) HP>

I stumbled back as the fox fell limply onto the ground, it was wheezing and unable to get up. Not wanting to get anywhere near the thing I cast another Rock Spike at it and was awarded.

*Ding <You have slain Black Fox, 120 experience gained>

I checked my mana for that fight, 115 mana for one level 4 fox. Well 48 of that was on buffs but with my overall mana of 660 I felt like I was in good shape. I needed to be more careful in the future, getting distracted by my own magic had let the fox get close to me. If it wasn't for my Earth Armor I would have actually suffered some damage. I took that lesson to heart; I was still learning, and I wouldn't take anything lightly. Not when it could mean the difference between life and death.

Reading myself I set off further into the woods, it was time to train. I started using Shadow Jump and instantly fell in love with this spell. It was basically a short teleport spell; I would cast it and end up 10 yards away stepping out of a shadow. The first time was a little disorienting, but I quickly became accustomed to the sensation of moving through shadows.

It would be fair to say I started a slaughter in the forest that day. No creature was safe from me. I was slaying two-tailed squirrels one after another without any difficulty. I killed 10 before the experience became so low that it really wasn't worth it to eradicate all of them. I was able kill another 7 black foxes, using the previous strategy with the addition of Shadow Jump if they got to close, I brought them down with little problem.

I was able to do all of this by the time mid-day arrived. Sometime after my sixth kill I had muted my notifications, I scrolled through them quickly while I sat down and slowly ate a wolf steak for lunch. I was shocked to see one particular notification.

<Congratulations you have gained a level!>

<You are now level 6; you have 5 Stat points to allocate!>

I had leveled up without even realizing it! I still had half the day left and already had reached level 6. That's insane, with my new spells I was able to take down these animals pretty easy after a little bit of practice. I wasn't even required to draw my daggers once today. "There is hope for me being a badass mage after all." I said to myself with a dumb grin spread across my face.

After finishing my lunch of grilled wolf steak, washed down with some water, I got to my feet and started hunting again. I avoided killing anything below level 4 now, the experience awarded was barely anything. Especially now that I needed a total of 3200 exp to get to level 7. It seemed the experienced required was doubled from level to level. I would need to be more careful with my spell choices and free stat points from now on, later on it could be a long time until the next one.

_______________________________________________________________________________

Deep in the forest inside a cave carved into the side of a small hill two blazing red eyes opened. The creature sniffed the air trying to find what had woken it from its sleep. The eyes burned brighter with a hellish light as the creature had found what it was looking for—blood. And not just any blood but human blood. It shook the slumber from its body, the shaking spread throughout the hill and forest.

It even alerted a hunting party 200 miles away, the parties eyes flew wide open in shock before they ran off the way they had come from.

The beast started to step out of its cave but when its claw entered the sunlight it hissed and withdrew back into the darkness. It's prey would have to wait. It growled in annoyance and settled down to wait. It had waited a long time a few more hours were of little bother to it.

Here is the second chapter I promised you! Hope you enjoyed it. Things are starting to get a little bit interesting! Anyone care to guess what kind of creature is in the cave? Or could it be a creature of my own design? If you are enjoying the story please comment, leave a review, and vote a PS! They are all highly appreciated!

Next chapter will come as soon as I finish it tomorrow!
