60.43% Why We Slay Dragons / Chapter 54: The Sixth Tome: Arise

Kapitel 54: The Sixth Tome: Arise

Daylight had just broken on the horizon and was just beginning to stream into the massive throne room where I lay curled up on the Drago Throne, 6 Draconic visages curved above my skull looking every bit as menacing as I felt after the most recent reports. It was at this time when I received the news, 'Apophis has returned!' Not long after, that once small Red Dragon burst into the throne room with a pronounced swagger. His voice was a silky baritone and his size dwarfed mine by many meters, if this room hadn't been built to hold dozens of full grown Dragons he would not have even fit inside. When he spoke, it was in a smooth commanding tone, a compulsion to lower my head filled me, I resisted with great effort. "What, no greetings for your Emperor?"

Emperor? We Dragons had no Emperors, we had Kings, I told him this, in response he laughed. A deep powerful laugh that shook the foundations of the hall. "Once, maybe," he said, "But now it is a new era, is it not? Allow me to ease your fears, the Dragon Kings will remain, they will rule over the Chromatic Dragons and I will rule over the Kings. "This I think, is the direction we should take." I of course was confused, We Dragons had always established Chromatic Kings and one Dragon King to rule all Dragons, the only difference between the two was Apophis wished to be named Emperor, I couldn't help but feel there was more to this than he revealed. "I must thank you however," he continued, "for maintaining order in my absence," his voice caused me to feel shame and unconsciously my head dipped, he must have thought that I bowed because his tone grew stronger, "It is loyal followers of your caliber that we require in the coming days," he said and beckoned with a wing for me to leave the throne. I did of course, out of shame nothing more, but if Apophis believed he could change the path of destruction I had set us on then I would gladly follow. "Why are there only White Dragons in Egradim?" he asked, I quickly explained the situation, I told him how I had evacuated Egradrim to escape the Humans retaliation and stayed behind to observe their movements.

Apophis nodded silently, "Then we must gather them again and launch our offensive," he said confidently.

Apophis did not keep us waiting, he was eager to exhibit his power. He breathed fire, surprising us all, only the Fallen should be capable of breathing fire. Apophis merely laughed and did not reveal his secrets, we attacked the Human settlements, Apophis personally razed them to the ground. The cries of Humans and cattle pierced our sensitive ears as they died in the thousands, burned alive in their homes, on their roads, wherever we found them. It wasn't long before the Humans flew out to meet us, yes flew, on winged beasts. A deadly aura pervaded the air but Apophis laughed with madness in his voice, and without a word destroyed those powerful Humans. He did not bat a wing or swipe a single claw, one moment they hovered before us the next they were dead, not even the mounts were spared. And I wondered what Apophis had done to attain such power as I gazed at him from the corner of my eye. The Red Dragon King, Apophis successor- Ashuur, released a small whimper, gone were his ambitions to snatch Apophis' throne. It was instead replaced by fear, he who had nearly driven the Red Dragons to extinction. The Green Dragons looked on in awe and as one, bowed their heads. Even the prideful Blue Dragons swore loyalty to Apophis on the spot. Only I and the Black Dragon King managed to maintain our composure in the face of this raw display of power, but I could see him waver. Apophis did not attack the capital as I had done, instead he destroyed their farms, his reasoning being, "Hungry soldiers will not fight, and if they do only desperately and not as well." He grinned after imparting this bit of wisdom as he summoned fire from his belly and razed the storehouses to the ground. "Let us return," his task accomplished, Apophis took to wing and sped towards Dragonwall. It had been several months since we had left Dragonwall to reunite the Dragons, when we returned we found a powerful barrier sealing off Egradim, we could not enter. Our Holy City was closed to us.

Ra stopped reading, "This was recent!" he gasped, recalling the visit from the Blue Dragon Saint not too long ago, "Then the Dragon who wrote these, he should still be alive!" Thoughts began to fill Ra's head of a Dragon who sought co-operation with Humans and not war, but after some thought his face fell, "but we already betrayed him," he sighed, Ra reluctantly returned to reading the Tome, so near the end he was determined to learn all he could.

My brethren were enraged, hundreds and hundreds of them began to peel off from the rest, they sped in a seemingly random direction as if being guided by instinct. They flew at a speed I had not known was possible and soon disappeared over the horizon. I however remained and continued along with Apophis in our attempts to break through the barrier. Apophis in his fury re-entered seclusion, leaving orders not to disturb him, we were to attack the Human capital in 3 months when they were at their weakest.

I find myself recalling peaceful times before the war, before the arrival of Humans and the other savage races. I'm sure the Humans possess much shorter memories and do not remember how beautiful this land had been before they arrived. But that isn't the purpose of these Tomes, I have documented these events so that all who come after know of the cunning and tyranny of Humans, in the hope that they will not share a similar fate. Ra read these last few lines several times as he flipped frentically through the pages, but all that remained were instructions detailing skills that dealt with movement through the various elemental realms. Noticing that he had been holding his breath for a long time Ra took in a sharp intake of air and refilled his straining lungs. "This is the last one..." he was afraid to open it, he knew only death waited within its pages, he had personally slain many Dragons and he was painfully aware of the deaths on their end by this time. Nonetheless, he felt it was his duty to see this through, and with that and a heavy spirit, he extended his hands towards the seventh Tome.
