Kapitel 4: The temporary goodbye

After all the advice we got from Nan, she asked us if we needed a lift to the airport and Skye said that her Mom would take us, she even joked that her Mom wanted to make sure that she's out of the country for a while and why that is, is a big question mark for her.

Anyway, Skye called her Mom and after a few more minutes of talking with Nan about last minute reminders of do's and don'ts of travelling, her Mom arrived and we said our goodbyes to Nan.

She was teary eyed and standing at the door when I was walking out to the car when I looked back. I couldn't just walk out and leave her like that so I went and run quickly back to her. I gave her a good hug and kissed her forehead, "Nan, you look after yourself, I love you and I will call you when we land down under, ok? I will call you everyday that I'm away, you wouldn't even notice I was gone. I'm sure you'll get sick of me coddling you."

"You do that, honey! I'm just not used to you going away very far and for some time! But I will be alright! Don't worry about me! Go and have an adventure, take plenty of pictures for me!" she said.

I hugged her again one last time then walked to the car and got in.

"Seatbelt everyone?" I heard Skye's mom asked.

"Done." Skye said, I buckled my seat belt and answered "Done."

I waved to Nan as we drove off her driveway, seeing her wave back to me with a big smile this time.

Sally looked at the rear view mirror and tried to catch my eyes. She smiled and asked if I was ok..

"Yes, Aunty, thank you." I answered then tried to look away.

I tried to keep to myself, my thoughts going from zero to a hundred thinking about my Nan, my future, Sally, Skye then I thought about my Mom when she was alive. I remember her cooking and baking cookies for me everytime she comes home from work.

I remember her smile when I did well and concern when I get hurt from a graze, or if I stumble and fall. Then my thoughts were interrupted when I heard Skye said my name.

"Wynter? Wynter? Hello? Anybody there? It seems like the light is on but nobody's home!" she singsongs her joke.

" Yes Skye, I'm here now" I said.

" Geez! You were miles and miles away, girl! Where did you go?" she asked.

"Skye, shut up, I was just reflecting.." I need to get out of this conversation as I don't want to divulge my deep thoughts. "Aunty, how can you have such a busybody of a daughter?"

"Believe me Wynter, she didn't get it from me!" then she laughed and winked at me at the rear view mirror.

I look at Skye look at her Mom, "My, my I think the saying 'the fruit doesn't fall from the tree' applies here, Mom"

Quite frankly looking at them and hearing them banter makes me jealous of some sort, I mean don't get me wrong, Sally has been good to me and treats me like her daughter too, but it's different when it's your real mother I think.

Before we knew it, we're queued up in traffic towards the international airport. The long line of vehicles in front of us can be seen for miles. I look out the car window and saw other people in their cars, what could be running in their minds this moment, this very minute?

Before long, I saw the line of manicured trees and plants on the side and then up ahead all the travellers getting dropped off the terminal. Their friends? their father? mother? sister? brother? kids? lovers? hugging and saying goodbye.

Sally parked on the curb then I heard Sally said something to Skye then she started talking to me too.

"Ok girls, we're here, I hope you have a great flight, keep me posted when you land, keep safe and don't drink anything that was handed to you at the bar without you looking! Don't trust anyone who just happen to smile at you! Look after each other and look out for each other..." she was about to say something when Skye cut her off.

" Mom, we're going to be ok. Please don't worry too much, we will be back before you know it and we will tell you all about our adventure for sure! Keep it together, Mom! I don't want to be a complete wreck when I board the plane! You know I can't stop my tears when I see you cry!" she then gave Sally a hug and her Mom laughed.

Then Skye was laughing too, then her Mom started to cry, "My baby! You're all grown up now and out for an adventure! Good luck and keep safe, baby!" she kissed her in the head and let her go.

We then stepped out of the car and busied ourselves with our suitcase. Then she turned to me and gave me a bear hug. "Wynter, you're Mom would be very proud to see you today! Such a brave girl you are! Keep safe and look after my baby for me!" she then smiled.

"I will Aunty, see you soon, please check on Nan for me while I'm away" I said as I gave her a hug back then she let me go.

Then she was back with Skye again, saying their endless goodbyes and mother advices. Then it's time to go, Sally went in her car and we saw her pull out of the curb and out of the international airport.

We took our bags and wheeled it to the terminal. With our hearts full of hope and excitement for what is to come and the idea of the unknown we're going to, makes me feel a sense of dread but I let it slide off my mind as we walk forward towards our future!
