We arrived at the Guild on the day Jenny instructed us to come, bringing along the supplies and equipment for the job. Lia's job. I'm just tagging along to accompany her and make some bling in the process. We walked right up to the counter and met with… not Jenny. The neatly dressed middle-aged man greeted us, "Good morning Adventurer Lia, is there anything I can do for you?"
"Umm…" Lia fumbled, "Jenny told us to be here at the day before departure…"
"Hmmm?" he wondered for a moment before realizing, "Ah, the Sanca Tournament request. Just head to the carriage at the city gates. Look for a coachman named Hendricks and show him your tags. The carriage will depart an hour or two after lunchtime, together with a few other carriages forming a convoy. Please make sure not to be late."
"Thank you, sir."
He smiled, "Pleasure to be of service."
"Is Jenny not in?" I asked.
"No. She told me she had some personal things to attend to out of town, as such requested a temporary leave from her post. She should be back sometime around a week or two," Norton replied.
Hah. She must've left in advance in order to make sure she made it in time. I chuckled to myself. It reminds of the lengths people would go, ditching work just to catch a live game.
"We'll be on our way. Thanks, Norton."
"You're welcome, Adventurer Mike."
-Few days later-
I sat beside Hendricks on the front of the carriage, quietly running through my business plans in my mind for when we reach the town. He was a man in his late twenties, a bit shorter than me, a little stout, with thick black hair and strong-looking limbs. The journey went without much action. Unlike the first time I travelled with a group of cheap-ass merchants, choosing to route through the woods so to avoid bandits whilst hiring the minimum amount of Adventurers. Though through a stroke of bad luck, got jumped by them. Well, we managed to deal with the bandits though. But it was a close call and almost a miracle that no one except me got hurt. I still remember the words Alan had told me before he poof into a cloud of smoke, that Lia is hiding something. That she's dangerous. But as far as I can tell, she's anything BUT dangerous. Okay, there's the thing about her potion (and maybe poison) brewing skills, but you get my point.
Anyway, like I said, nothing worth noting at the trip there. Just the fact that I had to address Lia by "Mistress" and acted like her butler.
Hendricks the coachman had initially refused my intentions to board, saying something about how it's reserved exclusively for Healers who had taken the request. I thought about bribing him or even riding with another carriage, but hell - where's the fun in that? So I told him that I was, in fact, Lia's protégé. Not exactly the most convincing story. But hey, it's the truth.
He frowned at me, not buying a single cent of truth I just handed him. Thus, in a stupid attempt to convince him, I had whipped a lame-ass fantasy backstory that was filled with so many plot holes that you just want to rip your hair off and scream profanities at it.
I ended my tale with grandeur and left Hendricks scowling in contemplation. Eventually he turned to me, an unimpressed look on his face and said, "That was absolutely bullsh*t."
The story I had told Hendricks, was about a boy who was orphaned by an attack on his village. Surviving the monster's attack by hiding under the bed, where his parents sacrificed their lives in order to divert the monster's attention away from him. The village burned, he was the only survivor, yada-yada, almost dying due to severe burns, hunger, and dehydration. Then was miraculously found by a mysterious and beautiful savior who saved his life and gave him food and shelter. In return, he devoted his life in order to serve her as a butler, becoming her apprentice too at the same time. A butlepprentice. As to why she looked younger than me right now - magic. She had used magic to alter her appearance, returning to the height of her beauty and innocence. Point is, I told the story so badly that it even made myself cringed. I mean, being the only survivor of a monster's raid and surviving a haze of carbon monoxide poisoning from the fire? And where the hell did the fire even came from? I should really brush up my fiction-weaving skills to further boost my hoodwinking prowess.
I shrugged nonchalantly, "Told ya the truth at first but you didn't believe me."
He snorted at my response and decided to let me ride. No charge.
As to the reason why I continued addressing Lia as my mistress and treat her super respectfully is simply because it's fun seeing her reaction: wincing, blushing, flustering, all sorts of facial expressions I never thought she could make. Which in my eyes, raised her adorability points.
The carriages kept going on a steady pace, pulled by two horses going through paved roads. We were fifth in line of a total of eight carriages, forming a convoy. There's safety in numbers after all. Especially with seven Silver-Rankers escorting us there. One of them includes Danny, the Silver-Blonde haired dude who back in the Guild, asked Lia to join his party, insulting me in the process. The guy Jenny has a crush on. Damn. I mean, what's with the hair? Is that even his natural hair color? Ignoring the fact that I had already disliked him from the first few seconds of our meeting, he had been occasionally shooting me unpleasant gazes from time to time during the trip to Sanca Town. I wonder how Jenny would react if I told her how Danny had been checking me out.
