Kapitel 11: E L E V E N

I N D I G O

After school had ended, I went home to grab some things before heading over to Vera's. There was a note sticking on the fridge reminding me that he wouldn't be back until Sunday night. Once I was finished packing an over night bag, I skated my way to the cafe.

"Raise your hand for bowling," Vera said while rolling her eyes.

"Okay, now raise your hand for the movies," she stated while throwing her own hand in the air. I heard her exasperatedly sigh, "so it's a tie..."

"No! Indie still needs to vote," Tyler whined while pointing at me. Everyone just now realizing I'm here, turned around in their seats with grins plastered on their faces.

I put my finger on my chin and pretended to think really hard about my decision. "I've never been bowling, so I think that'd be fun," I said while shrugging my shoulders.

"You've never been bowling?," Jake asked inquisitively.

I shook my head but could see out of the corner of my eye that Milo was frowning, so I went to sit down next to him. "What's wrong?," I asked, not understanding what I could've done to upset him.

"Nothing... I just... well, how have you never been bowling?," he asked.

I shrugged my shoulders because I didn't have much of an answer.

"What did you and your dad do for fun growing up?," he questioned.

"Uh-- we, uh... watched a lot of movies... m-my dad doesn't really like leaving the house," I replied. I mean, it was half true. Jim hates public outings.

"Hm, well it's a good thing we're going bowling then," he said humorously.

We reached the bowling alley before the sun began to set, then paid for a lane and shoes. I looked around and saw an overabundance of neon colors on the walls. There was an arcade section, a classic jukebox in the corner, a concession stand and bar in the back, and about 20 bowling lanes. Music was playing through the speakers in the ceiling and I couldn't help but do a little dance in my head.

How cool is this?!

I watched as she spun her head around in different directions, taking in all the things in the bowling alley. She looked like a kid on Christmas. I wanted to be excited with her but I couldn't help but feel a little angered as to why her dad wouldn't take her to places like this. She was deprived of a childhood, that much I could tell.

She picked up a few different sizes of bowling balls before deciding 6 was her number, but even with that being the lightest one here she looked like she struggled.

After we all entered in our names into the keyboard in front of our lane, Tanner and I went to order a couple of pizzas and sodas.

When we returned back, it was now Indie's turn and she looked entirely clueless. I couldn't help the grin on my face, she looked so cute.

I took the opportunity to sneak up behind her and whisper in her ear, "let me help you, ángel."

I showed her where to put each finger and how to pull the ball back before tossing it into the lane. She still didn't look very confident as she stared down at the coral granite colored bowling ball. Within a second, I had my body flushed up against her back while my hands guided hers.

I could feel her tense up and saw that she was somewhat wincing. "Relax baby girl," I whispered to the back of her head. Her body slumped down a little, but when she went to toss the ball, I saw her cringe again.

What's going on with her?

I wanted to ask but felt like this wasn't the place. So, I brushed it off after deciding that I'd ask her tonight at home. I attempted to give her the best time, wanting it to be memorable. Tyler taught her how to play the crane game, while Jake gave her pointers on how to get the highest points in skee-ball. Tanner played her in a game of air hockey and lost; we all knew he let her win, but she didn't and watching her hopping around with glee in victory made me smile wholeheartedly.

After a few hours, I noticed Indie and Em yawning, so I motioned for the guys to wrap up our game early. Once we got back to the house, the girls went upstairs to change into their pajamas before coming down to the living room. We all took our seats on the couches while Vera chose a movie to watch. Indie laid her head on my shoulder and in turn, I lifted my arm and wrapped it around her pulling her closer into me. She nuzzled her head into my chest and got comfortable. I began to draw circles on her arm as the movie began, replaying our fun night together. I thought about how happy she looked when Tyler had won a miniature teddy bear using the cheap claw machine, and how she almost started crying when he gave it to her. I thought about how I watched all three girls giggling hysterically at Jake and Tanner, who had busted out in idiotic dance moves to a Taylor Swift song playing, thinking how easily it was for my sister and Em to accept Indie. She was pleased by the smallest of things. I thought about how I taught her to bowl, how I felt all the electricity running through my veins due to being so close to her. But then I immediately remember the flinching, the wincing, the pain in her face. I snapped my attention down to her, only to see that she had already fallen asleep on me. I sighed in frustration, knowing it was my fault for not bringing it up earlier.

I'll have to talk to her about it tomorrow.

A soft inanimate object plopped on my face, waking me up from my slumber. I glared up at a snickering Vera, and Em who had her fore finger planted on her lips as if to 'shush' me. I wiggled out of Milo's hold and followed them into the kitchen. We made us a bowl of cereal and then went to the room to get dressed.

When we got back downstairs, we noticed the guys were still asleep. So, we wrote them a note telling them we were going costume shopping and that we'd be back later.

We pulled up to Party City after about twenty minutes of hardcore scream singing to random songs playing on the radio. Vera was the first one in the building; I could tell she really liked this holiday. We walked down all the isles, stopping every five seconds to put on different masks and other props. The store had a lot of their products on display, so you could hear witch cackles and other spooky noises bouncing off the walls like a rubber ball.

To say I was having a blast was an under statement. We were giggling and yelling like a bunch of maniacs, but nobody seemed to mind. Hell, some of the people even took part in our goofiness by laughing with us. Vera had finally decided on being Wonder Woman, which she definitely pulled off. The outfit hugged all of her curves, which complimented her very well. Em chose to be Waldo from Where's Waldo; and to be truthful, it was totally her style. The costume consisted of a red and white striped beanie, a loose half sleeved red and white crop top, with black rimmed glasses. Later, she would pair it with some ripped up denim capris Vera told her she could borrow. As for me-- well, I had to make sure it was covering certain areas so I played it safe by being a cat. I told the girls I was going to wear my own black clothing but that I'd buy a cat eared headband. At first they were against it, but changed their minds quickly when I told them that they could do my hair and make up.

Milo had texted me letting us know that they wouldn't be back until this evening due to another errand at the warehouse. With that in mind, the girls and I went to the 59 Diner for lunch.

When we got home, I noticed there were a lot of people moving stuff in and around the house. Noticing my confusion, Em said, "they're starting to prep for the party. I told you money wasn't a concept to this family."

I looked at her, my mouth formed in an 'O' shape. We mosied our way through the sea of sweaty guys and made our way upstairs to Vera's room. Once we got there, Em turned on the radio while Vera turned on the straightener and curling iron.

Vera threw her thick hair up into a high pony tail while a few strands hung loosely on the side of her face. Her make up was bold; winged eyes with gold eyeshadow and red lip stick. Em just let her natural waves flow with the Waldo beanie. She never wears much make up, so she let Vera do her signature eyeliner style and threw on some chap-stick. They decided to keep my hair down but straightened it and parted my hair down the middle, adding the cat ears last. For my make up, Vera begged me to let her do a smokey eye look so I let her, remembering I told her she could be in charge of this 'makeover'. When she was done, she chose a nude shade for my lips which I ended up really liking.

When we were done, I slipped on a black half sleeved shirt that felt a little tight in the chest area and tucked it into my high waisted ripped black skinny jeans, topping it all off with my blacked out slip on vans. When I was done, the girls came back in and gasped when they saw me.

"Holt shit, Milo is going to lose his mind..." Vera said while smirking.

"So is Jake," I said, realizing what a total babe she looked like in her Wonder Woman costume.

"The guys are waiting!," Em sang as she skipped out the door.

Deep breaths. You got this Indie.
