100% Judgement War / Chapter 27: τέρας <Edited >

Kapitel 27: τέρας <Edited >

Jophiel, resolute and unyielding, released the tensioned bowstring, propelling the black iron arrow with crackling lightning-like flashes. It was an arrow of darkness, its trajectory uncannily precise. With a subdued "puff," the arrow, despite its mere half-month age, found its mark with astounding accuracy, striking the bullseye.

Astonishingly, one-third of this black iron arrow, imbued with an overwhelming force, shattered through the target, erupting with a thunderous bang. It punched a hole before penetrating the very heart of the iron τέρας, securing itself firmly within the creature's formidable frame.

In the wake of his remarkable shot, Jophiel carefully lowered his iron bow and smoothly transitioned back into the role of a trainee. His fellow comrades continued to grapple with the τέρας, displaying unwavering resolve.

Amidst the tension, the man with serpent-like eyes, a harbinger of enigma, broke the silence with a sly chuckle. "Fascinating, it becomes more intriguing by the moment," he mused. "His Majesty assigned me a challenging task, and for a moment, I feared it might be too simple. Yet, the universe delights in its surprises."

Understanding the urgency of the situation, Jophiel pulled aside one of the trainees, a man named Narmer. With a sense of urgency, he issued clear instructions for Narmer to depart from the Garden of Eden and summon reinforcements. The planet was still in the midst of mana recovery, and only the high-tier Gods possessed the abilities needed for such a task.

Returning his focus to the τέρας' leader, Jophiel was met with a shocking revelation. Standing before him was none other than Apep, a name he believed vanquished long ago. "Why are you not vanquished? How do you thrive with this τέρας?" Jophiel inquired, his disbelief etched into his features.

Apep, infuriated by the mere utterance of his name, extended a pointed finger forward. Poison, with a vivid Uranium Yellow hue, began to materialize—a sinister beauty that belied its deadly nature. As the poison permeated the air, it released smoky blue smoke, forcing all present to instinctively cover their noses and cease breathing, for even the helium vapor carried a toxic threat.

Apep directed the poison toward Narmer, his intent unmistakably sinister. In the blink of an eye, Jophiel drew his bow and arrow, releasing the arrow in a daring attempt to intercept the deadly assault. While he managed to dissipate a portion of the poison, some still struck Narmer as he made his exit from the Garden of Eden.

An intense exchange followed. "Do not recklessly label them as τέρας," Jophiel admonished, "and do not provoke me, for you once conspired against me during the last Judgmental War."

Apep responded with a revelation that left Jophiel thunderstruck. "These Nidhoggs, created by my Master, may not express emotions, but they have evolved to the point of speech," he declared.

Jophiel stood in stunned silence, grappling with the implications of this revelation. Could there be room for other forms of life amidst these Nidhoggs? The name "Nidhoggs" hinted at their role as ancient disaster monsters, even before Zeus's time, and their macabre practice of consuming the corpses of those guilty of murder, adultery, and oath-breaking. It was conceivable that, as they reached a certain level of evolution, they could regain their humanity, complete with memory and wisdom.

Now, Apep had laid bare the truth—that his master had crafted these monsters. This revelation cast a foreboding shadow over the future, suggesting that the Judgmental War could extinguish all life and hope. Some trainees, overwhelmed by the gravity of this revelation, collapsed under the collective weight of despair, facing Apopis, the ancient Egyptian demon of chaos, and the Nidhoggs, the harbingers of an impending doom.

*τέρας is a word the gods used to describe a freak of nature, a monster, as they felt disgusted by that entity.
