We didn't know at first what was happening. For all we knew, it could have been a new type of simulation. There was noise, gunfire, shouting... and then silence as the people in black entered our section of the building. Shock grew on their faces when they saw our isolation quarters... 'cages' they called them.
It was the first time my siblings and I had seen anyone other than the lab techs or their superiors. We would be moved from our isolation rooms to the simulaton pods, then back to our rooms. That was all we knew from the time we were born. That and the constant testing.
Several days after the people in black had taken us away we were told there would be one more simulation to go through. This one wasn't about being a soldier and killing, but learning socialization and life skills instead.
When the training started we were required to choose a name for ourselves. They didn't seem to want to call us by our numbers. I was 8936B... and I sometimes heard the techs whisper freak or glitch. It was suggested that we pick a name based on something we like. Well I had always liked the night sky I saw whenever we did simulations. The shadows felt warm and welcoming.
Now that they think we are ready, or rather socialized, they are sending us out into the world. I just hope they are ready for us.
This is the story of the one who was 8936B. The story of the one who has become Moon Shadow... This will be my story. Who knows what will happen.

Four years from present day...
"Are these reports accurate?"
"Yes sir."
"These countries are all ready to start the operation?"
"Yes sir."
"All right, inform the joint task force I'm heading over."
"Yes sir."
The general sighed as his assistant left the room and looked back at the information in his hands.
It was recently discovered that a large multinational corporation had been performing human experiments. Genetically manipulating/ blending the DNA of their subjects before birth and raisng them in a laboratory environment. They were subjected to experiments to develope new medicines and trained to be 'super soldiers'.
Having discovered this, the world's government's had formed a joint task force to take down all the labs at the same time, to preserve as much evidence as possible.
This raid was about to take place.

Thomas Draklyn looked around at his team, the elite of the elite. Most average people hadn't noticed yet, but more and more oddities had been showing up in the world's population recently, even his own son was starting to show signs.... He sighed, at least his team was putting theirs to good use.
When the saw all the under 19 year olds in their tiny enclosed rooms they xould hardly believe their eyes. It was one thing to read about it in the paperwork, but somehow a lot more disturbing in person. There were clipboards attached to each cell with all the details about the occupants, including experiments done, and how their genetics had been manipulated.
One of the occupants, a girl, had decidedly feline eyes and actual claws flexing in and out from her fingers. Thomas sighed. How would a world that had trouble adjusting to new things be able to accept these poor kids?
{2 years before present time}
They finally had a right to citizenship. Moon Shadow grinned at her dorm members.
"So, what so you guys plan to do now that we have completed the compulsory virtual acclimatization course?"
Obsydian spoke for the rest of the group. "We'll stay here with you while we look for work or training. Everyone is aware of the stares you get when you go out. And the discomfort they cause you. What about you, other than staying in the dorm?"
"I'm going to learn! That virtual world we were in while training to live in society was somewhere I could be myself without scaring those around me.... I felt so free!" Moon's eyes gleamed. "I want to learn all I can about virtual reality!"
~~~
Thomas looked at his son in concern. "Have there been any new changes?"
Talon sighed wearily. "It's gone beyond mere instincts... I'm having dreams now. Real ones." His father had told him that their family had always had strong and accurate instincts, but his kept getting stronger... to the point of disturbing his sleep.
"Do you think it will adversely affect your work?"
"Not yet, if anything it will probably help on occasion. But if if gets to the point it does affect my work, I can always join one of the research teams rather than doing fieldwork. Someone needs to study the Lunar Radiation."
At least the radiation didn't seem to be adversely affecting Talon. It seemed from all reports that it reacts with hidden, or dormant genes in the human body. So for not all of the reports had involved beneficial changes.
{Present Time}
There was a great deal of speculating happening in the media. Just how different was the latest VRMMO system going to be? One year ago some scientists had discovered a way to harness the Lunar Radiation as a power source, releasing the news to the world at large. Now this new Virtual Reality system also used the radiation to power itself, making it a completely mobile, off the grid and perpetually running machine.
The release of the system and it's first game were eagerly awaited. It was going to be even more realistic than previous VR games according to the hype. However some of the governments were still wary of the effects a Lunar Radiation powered system would have on human genetics. Given this suspicion they organized for military volunteers to also enter the game and provide feedback on any physical changes that occur while playing.
Talon looked over the information then up at his father, "I'll do it."
"Are you sure? Your abilities have already been developing and changing?" Thomas was concerned what would happen to his son.
"It is precisely those abilities that are telling me to do this. I would be missing something very important if I did not participate."
"Well If that's the case, I guess there's no choice then."
~~~
Moon eagerly finished setting up her VR system and turned to the others. "So if we get to choose where we start, do you guys want to start in the same place? Or just choose wherever and meet up later?"
"Well from listening to what you have said about other games, there are limited amount of special quests, gear and classes. It might be more beneficial if we slit up." Obsydian looked over at the other two for their opinion.
"I was kind of looking forward to stepping out on my own, seeing how strong I could get using my own abilities."
"Me too. Imagine all the places we could explore."
Moon looked at them all grinning. "I was kind of hoping you guys would say that."
"How long until the game opens?"
"9:00 am tomorrow."
"So what do we do until then?
"Hmmm, lets do our regular exercises & make sure we have sufficient nutrition. A lot of these games base your character's starting statistics on your own at the time of creation."
The girls all giggled together. They were still getting used to living in freedom, although they were still reliant on the compensation payout income they had received. Which was managed by one of the Genalts, as they were called, who happened to become a financial expert.
Moon was hoping if they did well enough they might be able to earn a bit of their own income. The Head doctor their rescuers took them to see said it was important to develop their sense of independence in life. It would put them in a healthier state of mind.
The next morning as the time was counting down they took one last look at the paperwork for the game...
Leveling: Experience gained is not automatically allocated towards your level. You can chooses when and how to 'spend' your experience points.
Classes: Classes are not chosen during character creation. Options are given to you based on your gameplay at 'level 10'. This can be used to your advantage.
Skills: Some are learned based on how you develop your character. Some are taught by other players, NPC's & books. And others can be created by oneself.
Gathering: Everyone has gathering as a passive skill, how well you do collecting various materials depend on how much time you spend on improving that type of gathering.
Rarities: Grey = Trash item; White = Common; Green = Uncommon; Blue = Rare; Purple = Elite; Red = Epic; Orange = Legendary; Yellow = Mythic; Gold = Divine; Black = Self-Created (original design); and Rainbow = Special/ Unique.
Trash Item: Sellable only to NPC vendors. One mans trash is another's treasure - some 'trash items contain hints or details about the Game World's Lore that may be useful in future quests.
Game Objective: Use you encounters in this world to evolve into stronger adventurers, capable of fighting back against the ever stronger dark minions intent on invading your new world.
AI controlled quests, storylines and rewards.
Name of game world: Galyndria.
Moon's preset alarm went off... Time to log in and create their characters.
There was a tingling feeling all over her body before she found herself in a void-like area, directly opposite a clone of herself, feline features included. A quiet androgynous voice spoke out.
"You are unable to change your character's appearance by more than 10%, would you like to make any changes?"
"No" Moon was playing this game so she could freely be herself, so why would she change?
"Do you wish to participate in a tutorial?"
She thought for a moment before responding. While she would like to discover things on her own, having no knowledge at all was just dangerous. "Yes."
The tutorial covered all the basics such as activating skills, accessing the inventory, selecting and locking on to targets and sensitivity levels such as pain and taste. All of this in both automatic and manual modes. At the end of which the voice spoke again.
"For a truer gameplay experience, it is recommended that you play in manual mode with a sensitivity level of at least 75-85%. These settings can be adjusted at any time in the character settings menu. Would you like me to instigate these parameters?"
"Manual settings, yes, but put the sensitivity at 95%"
"What name would you like to use in your travels through Galyndria? Please choose a first and last name."
Moon smirked. "Luna Tyk"
"...Are you sure you wish to be known as Luna Tyk?"
"Yes." A giggle escaped... Games were about having fun right?
"Congratulations on creating your character, you are the first Human Hybrid registered in the game and have received the following rewards:
-Title: First of the Hybrids. (5% increase to rewards from 1st discoveries/ clearances etc. Improved reputation gain with factions allied to the Hybrids)
- Gene strengthening serum. (Feline)"
Before she could even register the achievement and rewards, her vision blacked out only to open her eyes to a dark cave, even her improved night vision didn't seem to help. then she remembered the system notice she received and looked in her inventory.
Gene Strengthening Serum [GSS] (Feline): enhances the traits of feline genes - can also include changes to appearance.
"Well, here goes nothing." Luna murmured to herself and drank down the glowing fluid in the bottle...
All the cells in her body suddenly felt like they were burning. After several teeth gritting minutes the pain settled down and a notification popped up.
<GSS Feline activated dormant genes found in the hosts body... scanning changes>
<...>
<....>
<.........>
<Agility enhanced. Night Vision enhanced. Stealth enhanced. Clawed Attack enhanced. Leap enhanced. Tree Climbing enhanced. Developed Tail.>
"This all seems reasonable... wait... tree climbing?... no WHAT! A tail!!" Luna spun around in circle trying to see the new changes then realized what she must look like while doing so and stopped. The last thing she wanted were any jokes about a dog chasing it's tail. At least she could see better now.
There was only one path leading out from the cave, so it wasn't hard to decide which way to go. After a few minutes of walking she reached what at first appeared to be a dead end, only to see a symbol with the appearance of an angel start glowing. When Luna reached out and pressed it an opening above her appeared, light shining down. Using Leap she dug her extended claws into the edge of the hole and pulled herself up.
Once out of the dark tunnel she looked around and found herself in a small temple being stared at by a gape-mouthed priest.
