Gao Shun and Mi Fang led the infantry into the fray, their men moving in coordinated formations to counter the enemy's defense. Gao Shun's expertise in siege warfare translated well to the open battlefield as he directed his troops to break through the enemy's lines. On the other hand, Zhang Liao prepares the cavalries in the flank, lying in waiting to exploit an opening that will be opened by Xiahou Dun and Yu Jin's Army.
On the other hand, the archers were led by Jia Xu and Xun You, who played a crucial role in the battle. Positioned on elevated terrain, they had a clear view of the battlefield, allowing them to provide precise and deadly support to the infantry and cavalry below.
Jia Xu, with his sharp tactical mind, identified key targets in Xiahou Dun and Yu Jin's Army. "Focus on their officers and standard bearers," he commanded, his voice carrying authority. "Disrupt their chain of command and sow confusion in their ranks."
Xun You, equally astute, coordinated the timing and direction of the volleys. "On my mark," he signaled, "release your arrows. We will cover our infantry's advance and weaken the enemy's defenses."
The archers, disciplined and well-trained, followed the commands with precision. Arrows flew in coordinated volleys, striking down officers and disrupting the cohesion of Xiahou Dun and Yu Jin's forces. Each volley was timed to maximize the impact, creating openings for the infantry and cavalry to exploit.
Gao Shun and Mi Fang, leading their infantry with remarkable coordination, pressed their advantage. Gao Shun's expertise in siege warfare shone through as he directed his troops to break through enemy lines, using pincer movements and feints to outmaneuver their opponents.
Mi Fang after learning much knowledge under Zhao Yun and Xun You, with his keen sense of battlefield dynamics, ensured that their formations remained tight and resilient against counterattacks.
Zhang Liao, watching intently from the flank, saw the opportunity he had been waiting for. "Cavalry, ready yourselves!" he shouted. The Xiliang cavalry, mounted on powerful steeds, tensed with anticipation. "Wait for the signal. When the time comes, we will strike with the force of a thunderstorm!"
The battle raged on, the sound of clashing steel and the cries of warriors filling the air. Cao Cao's men, though disciplined, began to show some signs of strain under the coordinated assault.
Xiahou Dun and Yu Jin fought valiantly, trying to maintain their lines and rally their troops, but the Qilin Army's well-coordinated attacks and the devastating volleys from the archers were taking their toll.
Lie Fan, leading the charge with his bodyguards and Xu Rong alongside the Tian Mao Battalion, continued to cut through the enemy ranks with fierce determination. His presence on the battlefield inspired his men, giving them the courage to push forward despite the chaos around them.
At a critical moment, Jia Xu and Xun You exchanged a glance, recognizing the perfect timing for Zhang Liao's cavalry to strike. Jia Xu raised his hand, signaling the archers to shift their focus to a concentrated barrage, targeting the right flank of Cao Cao's lines.
"Now!" Xun You shouted to the drummer, his voice carrying over the battlefield. "Hit with everything you got so that General Zhang could hear the beat!"
Zhang Liao hearing his signal, with a fierce battle cry, led his cavalry in a thunderous charge. The horses' hooves pounded the earth as they surged forward, crashing into the weakened center of Cao Cao's forces.
The impact was devastating, splitting the enemy's lines and causing chaos and panic among their ranks. Seeing this, Yu Jin took over the command of the army from Xiahou Dun and managed to quell the chaos and panic but it was already too late.
With the cavalry breaking through, Lie Fan saw the opportunity to press the advantage. "All units, advance! Push them back and secure victory!" he commanded, his voice resolute.
The battle intensified as both sides fought with relentless ferocity. Lie Fan's order to advance burned the spirit of the Qilin Army, and their coordinated assault began to push Xiahou Dun and Yu Jin's forces back, despite the latter's best efforts to hold their ground.
Xiahou Dun fought fiercely at the front lines, rallying his men and trying to stabilize their formation. Yu Jin, commanding with a calm and steady demeanor, directed his units to reinforce critical points, preventing a complete rout.
Despite their valiant efforts, the signs of strain were evident especially due to the coordinated attacks by the Qilin Army under Jia Xu and Xun You coordination had inflicted significant damage.
Amidst the chaos, Jia Xu received a report from an Oriole Agent. The message, delivered with urgency, informed him of an approaching force from Chenliu, 50,000 men strong, bearing Cao Cao's banner and led by Bao Xin, Li Tong, and Meng Da.
Jia Xu, recognizing the potential threat, swiftly relayed the information to Xun You. "Xun You," he said, his voice calm yet urgent, "an additional force from Chenliu is on its way, led by Bao Xin, Li Tong, and Meng Da. They number 50,000 strong and will arrive soon."
Xun You hearing the news had his mind racing, quickly assessed the situation. "We cannot afford to let them reinforce Xiahou Dun and Yu Jin's army, Master Jia Xu. It will have a large impact on the current pace of the battle," he said to Jia Xu.
Jia Xu, his strategic mind already formulating a plan, suggested, "We can split our forces. General Zhang Liao and Gao Shun can continue pressing the attack here, maintaining pressure on Xiahou Dun and Yu Jin. Meanwhile, a detachment of our best troops can intercept the approaching reinforcements."
Xun You nodded, agreeing with the plan Jia Xu had proposed. "Yes, I agree! General Zhang Liao and Gao Shun will lead the main force and keep the pressure on the Xiahou Dun and Yu Jin. Meanwhile, General Ji Ling and Xu Rong will take a detachment of 40,000 men and intercept Bao Xin's reinforcements to prevent them from joining forces with Xiahou Dun and Yu Jin."
Jia Xu and Xun You exchanged a look of approval, recognizing the wisdom in Xun You's refined plan. They hadn't yet informed Lie Fan, knowing the urgency required a carefully crafted strategy. As the battle wound down for the day, Lie Fan, his generals, and advisors gathered in the main camp to discuss their next move.
Lie Fan, still emanating the vigor of battle, took his seat and turned to Jia Xu and Xun You. "Report."
Jia Xu stepped forward. "My lord, our scouts have informed us that an additional force of 50,000 men from Chenliu is approaching, led by Bao Xin, Li Tong, and Meng Da. Their arrival could turn the tide in favor of Xiahou Dun and Yu Jin."
Xun You continued, "To prevent this, we propose splitting our forces. General Zhang Liao and Gao Shun will continue to press the attack here, maintaining pressure on Xiahou Dun and Yu Jin. Meanwhile, General Ji Ling and Xu Rong will take a detachment of 40,000 men to intercept Bao Xin and his army."
Lie Fan considered the plan carefully, nodding in agreement. "A sound strategy. We cannot afford to let Bao Xin's reinforcements bolster our enemy's ranks. However, I will join Xu Rong and Ji Ling in leading the interception."
Before Jia Xu and Xun You could object, Zhang Liao spoke up. "My lord, your presence on the battlefield will inspire the troops there. We will hold the line here and ensure that Xiahou Dun and Yu Jin are kept at bay."
Gao Shun on the side, also added some words, "With your leadership, the interception will be successful, My Lord. We trust in your judgment and will hold nothing back in our assault."
Jia Xu and Xun You exchanged another look, knowing that they couldn't object now seeing what happened, and then Jia Xu spoke. "Very well, my lord. Your presence with Xu Rong and Ji Ling will undoubtedly strengthen our efforts. We will coordinate the details and ensure both fronts are prepared for the coming battle."
The next day, as dawn broke, the Qilin Army moved into action. Zhang Liao and Gao Shun's forces continued their relentless assault on Xiahou Dun and Yu Jin, while Lie Fan, accompanied by Xu Rong, Ji Ling, and his bodyguards led the detachment of 40,000 men to intercept Bao Xin and his army.
As they approached the likely path of Bao Xin's forces, Lie Fan issued final instructions to Xu Rong and Ji Ling, to ensure their men were ready for the confrontation.
The landscape ahead was dotted with strategic points, where they could set up ambushes and use the terrain to their advantage. As they prepared their ambush, scouts were sent ahead to confirm the Bao Xin's Army position and movements.
On the other hand, Bao Xin, Li Tong, and Meng Da led their reinforcements with high spirits, confident that their arrival would tip the scales in favor of Xiahou Dun and Yu Jin. They envisioned themselves marching triumphantly to siege Qiao, unaware that Lie Fan and his forces had anticipated their every move.
As they made their way through the terrain, the landscape began to narrow, funneling them into a series of strategic points perfect for an ambush. The dense foliage and rocky outcrops provided ample cover for Lie Fan's troops, who lay in wait.
Lie Fan, Xu Rong, and Ji Ling had carefully positioned their men, ensuring they had the element of surprise. Archers were hidden in the trees and behind rocks, while infantry and cavalry were poised to strike from concealed positions. The tension among Lie Fan's soldiers was palpable, each one ready to spring into action at the signal.
Bao Xin rode at the front of his column, turning to Li Tong and Meng Da. "Our arrival will surely boost the morale of Xiahou Dun and Yu Jin's troops. Qiao will fall, and we will have played a crucial part in its capture."
Li Tong nodded, his eyes scanning the path ahead. "Indeed, General Bao Xin. Our forces are strong, and with the combined might of our armies, victory is assured."
Meng Da added, "We must keep up this pace. The sooner we join them, the greater our impact."
Unbeknownst to them, they had already crossed the threshold of Lie Fan's ambush. At a predetermined signal, a single arrow flew from the trees, striking a gong hidden from view. The sound echoed through the narrow pass, and in an instant, chaos erupted.
Lie Fan raised his halberd, his voice cutting through the din. "Attack!"
Arrows rained down from all directions, striking Bao Xin's men with deadly precision. The initial volley caused panic and confusion, their formations breaking as soldiers sought cover from the unseen attackers.
Xu Rong and Ji Ling led their infantry in a fierce charge, emerging from their concealed positions with a roar. The sudden appearance of disciplined troops sowed further chaos among Bao Xin's men, who struggled to regroup under the relentless assault.
Lie Fan, astride his horse Pangu, led the cavalry in a devastating flanking maneuver. His presence on the battlefield was a beacon for his troops, and they fought with renewed vigor under his command. The cavalry's charge shattered what remained of Bao Xin's formation, driving deep into the heart of the enemy ranks.
Bao Xin, realizing the gravity of their situation, tried to rally his men. "Hold your ground! Regroup and fight back!" But it was too late. The ambush had been perfectly executed, and the momentum was firmly in Lie Fan's favor. Li Tong and Meng Da fought valiantly to stabilize their lines, but the coordinated attacks from Lie Fan, Xu Rong, and Ji Ling left them with little chance to mount an effective defense.
