Mrs Caroline Roy and Sona Bhat looked at each other anxiously and began fretting.
After sometime, the nurse came out with the results, "Mrs Jayne Roy, your blood type is A+ve. Your eligible to donate blood to your husband. Please come this way. We'll carry out the further procedures."
"Nurse, can you please give us a moment." Mrs Sona Bhat intervened.
The nurse smiled and nodded, "Sure madam. Please come to the room at the end of the corridor. I'll be waiting for you," and left.
Jayne frowned and asked her mother, "Mama, what's it?"
Caroline Roy held Jayne's shoulders with both her hands and answered instead of Sona Bhat, "Jayne, you are so weak yourself. Plus you're still recovering. Let's talk to your dad. He'll arrange for someone. You don't have to do this child.
(AN:Considering the time, blood donation was still a big deal back then!)
Jayne looked into her mother-in-law's eyes, "Mom, Ronnie isn't just your son. He's my husband as well. My mother here has given birth to me." She pointed at her mother and then looked back at Caroline Roy, "But mom, if I'm standing here in front of you, it's only because of your son. This is the least I can do to him…"
She now faced both her mothers, "Moreover, my dear moms, it's just a blood transfusion. It's not going to kill me. Plus, if not me, who else mom? I'm doing it for my husband. If required, I wouldn't even mind giving my entirety to my husband…" She said with sheer determination.
To lighten their moods, she added, "Plus moms, you both can pamper me with some great food to regain all the blood." Though Jayne appeared to be normal on the outside, she was dying inside for her husband to wake up.
"Silly child!" Mrs Caroline Roy smacked Jayne's hand and kissed her forehead.
The ladies then walked towards the room. Jayne lied down on the bed and the nurse began the procedures of drawing blood from Jayne's veins.
By then Richard Roy and Arya Bhat came over to hear of Jayne's blood donation. The were both so overwhelmed that tears shone in their eyes.
The Lead surgeon, Dr William Scott explained the terms and risks involved with the surgery to the Roys and the Bhats.
Dr Scott placed a Consent Form on the table and began speaking, "Mr Roy, we need your consent as Mr Ronnie Roy's father. This is a major surgery involving the cranium. Mr Ronnie was hit with an iron rod, some pieces of the iron rod have been lodged inside. So, it involves a lot of risk either ways if operated or not."
"So, keeping that in mind, please think over. Whatever be your decision, you've to inform me at the earliest, since we don't have much time left. The more we delay, the riskier the operator gets."
Richard Roy answered, "Well Dr Scott, I might be Ronnie's father. But, since his wife is here she'll be giving you the consent. It's upto her to make a decision. We'll stand by her irrespective of what she decides."
Jayne answered, "Thanks dad for having that faith in me. But no, when mom and you are here, I don't want to make this decision. You please decide."
Richard Roy was proud of his son for choosing Jayne as his wife.
The family then turned towards Dr Scott.
Dr Scott began explaining further, "But let me tell you, if the operation is not a success, we can't guarantee the chances of your son waking up at all."
The entire family froze.
Mrs Caroline Roy began sobbing, "Doctor please do something I want my son…"
Though Jayne had crumbled inside on the news, she hugged her mother-in-law in support.
"That's just the risk part. You don't have to worry too much, since we've the best Neurology specialists as a part of the team and they'll all give in their best." Dr Scott added.
Jayne didn't hold back any longer. "Dad, go ahead.. Sign the Consent Form…We've to take this leap of faith for Ronnie to wake up…"
Dr Scott smiled in admiration for the girl in front of her.
Dr Scott's team began with the surgery and after what seemed like ages for Jayne, came out of the operating room.
Jayne who was praying for her husband's recovery the entire time, rushed towards the doctor followed by the rest of the family.
"Doctor, how's my husband?" Jayne asked tearfully.
"The operation was a success Mrs Roy."
Jayne and the rest of the family heaved a huge sigh thanking God.
Dr Scott continued speaking further, "We'll be shifting him to the ICU in sometime where he'll be under observation for about twenty four to forty eight hours. I can't be telling anything for certain till then."
Once again worry and fear clouded their faces.
