"Want me to tell you why? Then I'll tell you why." Zhi Ruo stood up and let the blazer on her shoulder fall the ground. She no longer felt cold but anger that she had played.
"If not because of our past relationship then I wouldn't care at all. After all, we had become friends at one point in our lives. It just so happens that you once helped me before. And this is me paying you back," Zhi Ruo moved to stand in front of Mo Chou in a confident manner.
This sudden change of behavior made Mo Chou widen his eyes. Her steps got closer and closer until they were only centimeters apart. Her eyes contained anger and condescension, causing Mo Chou to feel confused.
Why had the tables turned?
"The Mo Chou I know would never abandon his work. He had once dreamed of standing at the pinnacle of the world and wanted to become a man worth remembering. A decade had already passed and you clearly have the ability yet you refuse to aim higher.
You had forgotten your ambition and became muddle-headed because of a little success and money. Many people also sacrificed a lot just to be able to stand on the same stage as our ancestors have done. You wanted to change the world. What right do you have to quit halfway through when in reality, you have just begun?
Tell me, if it isn't abandoning your so-called ambition, then aren't you worth less than a rotten fruit on the side of a street?"
Every word hit Mo Chou right in the heart. Memories resurfaced and he found himself going speechless. He remembered a scene like this once, but it was the opposite. Now, ten years later the positions were switched.
She had already gotten close to his face, her eyes held anger at the thought of him abandoning his ambition. She didn't want to see a person pass away with regrets because of such momentary and fleeting feelings. In courtesy of their past relationship, Zhi Ruo did not want to see him have regrets of not being able to achieve his dream.
It was quiet for a moment. The moon hung beautifully in the sky as the lights below them twinkled like stars. If anyone were to walk in on them they would think that they were kissing. The unfortunate lack of light and close distance to each other would make others misunderstand.
Finally, Mo Chou spoke.
"All the things you have said are right, but also wrong. I am not the same person I used to be. The blood, sweat, and tears I have sacrificed over the years have also not been in vain. All these years of fighting against fate had become a valuable lesson to me. This is why I have been considering for the past year the things that should've been done a long time ago."
Mo Chou decided to take a more confident stance and got closer to Zhi Ruo's personal space till she could feel his breathe.
"Don't be mistaken. I am not abandoning my ambition. In the first place, my ambition has changed from then and now," Mo Chou said in a low voice.
The sudden invasion of privacy made Zhi Ruo uncomfortable. Her arrogance wavered as she took a step back. Her gaze which contained anger softened, she avoided his piercing gaze.
Mo Chou did not know where he got this sudden burst of confidence from. If it was the past him he would've simply laughed it off and pretended that nothing ever happened. But this time, he wouldn't make the same mistake again.
He was done pretending.
"Look at me," Mo Chou softly said.
She refused to look at him for fear of breaking down. In fact, the reason why she refused to see him was to avoid the feelings she had tried so hard to hide.
That in actuality, she still felt the same. This broke her to the point of insanity that she had to go see a psychiatrist just to be able to contain her anxiety and panic attacks. She felt tears threatening to spill and her eyes moist.
Mo Chou felt his heart ache. Seeing her on the brink of breaking down made him all the more guilty. The gut-wrenching feeling made him uncomfortable. He touched her cheek and turned her to look at him.
He saw her eyes brimming with tears. The anger in her eyes dissipated and in turn frustration came. Zhi Ruo bit her lip. This was not her. She did not want to look weak in front of the very person who broke her.
"I missed you."
Zhi Ruo went stiff at his words. Those sweet words she had longed for when they were younger. His gaze was gentle as he stared with such loving eyes. This was also not him.
The Mo Chou she knew would never be so bold. Or perhaps, she never really knew him.
She took a deep breathe and closed her eyes. This was inappropriate. And it was wrong. So very very wrong.
"Stop doing that."
Mo Chou felt a pang in his heart. "Stop doing what?"
"Don't act like you don't know!" she yelled.
"That's why I'm asking you, what did I do wrong?" He grabbed her shoulder and made her face him.
"You come barging into my life and acting like nothing has ever happened when in fact something did! You need to stop this. We were over the moment you left! You keep saying such sweet words and then leave me hanging again like you did all those years ago."
It was like a dam had broke forth and tears fell from her face. "Why?! Why do you feel the need to always break me to the point of insanity?! Why won't you leave me alone?!"
Zhi Ruo could no longer take it. This was her breaking point. She didn't want to appear any weaker that she already was. She turned around with her tear stricken face and ran away like a madman.
