Kapitel 10: Chapter 10

The dispute in the palace hall continued as the chancellor took several steps towards the throne. Impatience creased his face, and his expression could not hide his shrewdness.

The steps he had taken were irreversible, as his mind was already made up. Nothing could deter him. As he reached the final step, his feet lifted and he prepared to ascend the stairs leading to the throne. One could only imagine the grandeur of the throne.

The throne seat was situated on a vast expanse, surrounded by walls and flooring adorned with intricate golden linings reminiscent of heavenly magnificence. It was evident why the chancellor coveted the throne for himself.

To sit upon that throne would mean embodying an allure of majesty, a beauty that seemed to radiate from the heavens, shining upon the occupant in that opportune moment. However, people often desire things beyond their reach, leading them to lament with words like, "if only I could..."

The steps leading to the throne were steep, just a short distance from where the dignitaries were permitted to stand. The throne was positioned so that the occupant would gaze down at their subjects, who in turn would raise their heads in deference.

This arrangement only added to the chancellor's anger, stemming from his interactions with the young emperor who had consistently held his head high while the chancellor felt belittled by the boy's gaze.

"Just you wait..." he muttered to himself, though the little emperor appeared unfazed by the chancellor's progress. The emperor's unwavering confidence continued to captivate the onlookers without a hint of concern for the chancellor's advances.

The chancellor had just completed a stride of twenty steps and stood on the cusp of ascending the stairs to the throne. The other dignitaries behind him swallowed nervously, their anticipation mounting as they awaited the impending clash between the chancellor and the young emperor. They were eager to witness the struggle, envisioning a scenario where the chancellor might have to resort to tugging at the boy's collar to wrest the seal from him. However, they were well aware that the young emperor was not one to yield easily; he would not simply stand by and allow the chancellor to have his way.

This realization left them feeling uneasy. In all their years of attending gatherings at the palace, this particular event stood out as the most peculiar and unexpected they had ever witnessed.

As the chancellor's foot hovered in mid-air, poised to descend upon the first step of the throne's stairs, it suddenly halted. He instinctively drew back a few paces as three soldiers appeared before him, seemingly out of thin air. The young emperor recognized them immediately; they were the loyal soldiers who had pledged their allegiance to him and accompanied him on a recent night. Even through their armour, he could see the parts of their bodies that bore signs of wounds he had inflicted on them. In that moment, a twinge of remorse tugged at his heart, acknowledging that perhaps he had taken things too far on that fateful night. Yet, he rationalized that it was all in the pursuit of certainty, and he shrugged inwardly.

The chancellor gazed at the soldiers, a look of bewilderment clouding his features. He could not comprehend why these soldiers had suddenly materialized to obstruct his path.

"What is the meaning of this?" he demanded of the soldiers before him. They offered no response, their unwavering gazes penetrating deep into the chancellor's eyes with a disconcerting intensity. The air was heavy with tension, the silence deafening as the unspoken words hung in the room, thick with intrigue and mystery.

In a moment of clarity, the chancellor realized that these soldiers must have been swayed by enticing promises or words of persuasion from the kid before him. He felt a pang of admiration for the boy's cunning and strategic acumen. How could he have underestimated the young one's ability to outmaneuver him in this treacherous game of power and influence?

"Do you know what you are doing? Do you know whose path you are blocking?" The chancellor's voice rang with authority and a hint of urgency, his words cutting through the stillness of the room. His mind raced, trying to piece together the puzzle before him, to understand the intricate web of alliances and betrayals that had led to this moment.

The soldiers remained stoic, their faces betraying no emotion as they stood firm in their allegiance to the little emperor who they had bowed their heads to beforehand and had already acknowledged him as their lord. The chancellor's grip on power seemed to be slipping, his once unshakable control now hanging by a thread as he faced this unexpected threat. He had not expected that there would be soldiers who had decided to take a kid as their lord. He could only think of the foolishness of their actions.

With a steely resolve, the chancellor squared his shoulders and took a step forward, his gaze unwavering as he addressed the soldiers once more. "You may have been swayed by promises of glory and power, but remember this: loyalty is a double-edged sword, and betrayal has its consequences. Choose wisely, for the path you walk may lead to either your triumph or your downfall."

The room fell silent once more, the weight of the chancellor's words hanging heavy in the air. The soldiers' glance at the chancellor continued to hold a hint of rudeness, not in the slight wavering at his words, their resolve adamant like the steel that crossed their hands. In that moment, the fate of the empire hung unbalanced, teetering on the edge of uncertainty as the chancellor and the little emperor stood locked in a tense standoff, each waiting for the other to make the next move.
