Chapter 11: Chapter 11: Dealing with Rejection

Leonel POV

I stared unblinking into the starry night sky, stunned at what I had just experienced. Never in history had someone blatantly rejected their fated mate as easily as Clare had rejected me. I knew that I was not mistaken about her being my true mate; it was an instinct that every wolf could recognize deep in their core when they finally came into contact with ‘the one.’

But she rejected me. For the first time in my life, I felt shattered. I had lost something that I never had and it broke me. The entire situation was unnatural and made me feel as though the very earth had been pulled from beneath my feet.

Was this sorrow? Heartbreak?

I hardly knew Clare at all, so it was not love; it was our destiny that she denied. It made sense that there would be consequences to going against nature.
