Chapter 17: End of The Calm

Eric looked out from the wall, onto what could only be called a sea of beasts. The sea was chaotic and disorderly, constantly writhing and shifting.

Compared to the orderly troops of Skali, the tide that stood before them was a mess. The mindless creatures that stood before them even fought amongst themselves.

Even with the opposing force, infighting, the tension was still building. The entire battlefield was like a powder keg, ready to go off with a single spark.

It was oddly still, like the world forgot to breathe. This was the very embodiment of the phrase "the calm before the storm". Everything was waiting for something.

It completely drew Eric into the atmosphere, waiting and subconsciously holding a breath. Suddenly, something slapped his shoulder, snapping him back to the present.

"I thought I told you to stop thinking about everything."

Conor remarked and withdrew his hand from Eric's shoulder. His appearance differed from an hour ago.

He wore an intricate metal chest plate and gauntlets, both a dark and dull grey. Over the rest of his body, leather armor covered the rest.

The biggest change was to his shield. On it was something that looked like a griffin.

Instead of having claws and a loin's tail, it had hooves and horse tail. It held a sword and a shield, yet it was heavily faded and full of holes.

This new appearance gave him the look of a knight, yet a hood emerging from his chest plate ruined the look. His nearly omnipresent half smile was gone, replaced with a blank scowl.

Alongside this appearance, the feeling he gave off changed. From his normal laid back and cheery feeling, to intrepid and commanding.

It was odd to see such a drastic change for Eric. He wondered who Conor was to change at the flip of a switch.

Conor slapped his shoulder again.

"Again, with the thinking man, it's like you can't stop."

"Don't worry about it this time. I was only trying to figure out who are you to take the face of a crazy person and sound sane."

"Hilarious, Eric, but when the fighting starts, make sure you focus until everything is dead or leave the battlefield. After all, you won't have me watching your back this time."

"I am going to focus, and where will you be the front lines?"

"I might as well be in the best place for me. Just don't be too shocked with what you see and forget to shoot."

"Damn, I guess I'll have to watch out for losing a good meat shield, then. Make sure not to go to crazy down there."

"Don't worry about me. I'll be fine. Odin, Zeus, make sure he doesn't get in too much trouble. On that note, I'm heading down. Hopefully, we'll see each other after."

Conor gave Zeus a scratch on the head and left. Once again left to wait, Eric cast his gaze heavenward.

The sky wasn't clear or overcast, only partly covered by clouds. Dark grey clouds shifted across the sky, slowly being pushed together by the wind.

Slowly they gathered, being focused into a single mass. Although it gave a small feeling of unease, it quickly settled into a near serene calm.

Eric looked back down onto the soon to be battlefield, taking a deep breath and cleared his mind. He was now ready.

Conor walked into a small path beside the gate and raised his shield to the guard standing there. The guard quickly nodded and opened the door, letting him through.

He quickly made his way to the front. When he arrived, he looked down and grabbed the top of the fabric covering his shield.

Conor wanted nothing more than to rip it off and throw it away, but he couldn't, as if carrying it was ingrained into his body. He hated the crest it held, but he couldn't put it down.

Looking at the sky, Conor sighed. He had always hated watching the sky. It would never make sense to him, yet it was always oddly familiar.

Today the sun hid halfway behind silver grey clouds, dimming the sky. Slowly, small darker wisps pushed towards the sun. It was as if they had come to steal away the light.

With everyone that pushed forward, they were stopped by the silver cloud, slowly absorbing them. Bit by bit, the silver faded away. In the end, leaving nothing but a dark and faded grey in front of the sun.

What had before just filtered the light now hid it away, darkening the sky. Suddenly, something nipped his ear.

He reached up and touched a familiar bristly coat and gently scratched it.

"Thanks. I'd never thought that I would get caught up in my thoughts like Eric."

Fun let out a small chatter and nuzzled his neck. Gently scratching her chin, he continued.

"How long has it been since we last did this? Two or three months, I guess, right, girl?"

Before his and fun talk could continue, Syd interrupted them.

"Aren't you supposed to be up on the wall? What in the Sam hell are you doing down here?"

Conor raised his shield to show off the crest.

"Unfortunately, the wall would be the worst place to put me with my talent set. Wouldn't you agree?"

That crest that would mean you're a"

Quickly interrupting Syd, Connor said. "Yes, I'm one of them, but I would also like to keep that under wraps."

"Then why are you here? Did you know this was going to happen?"

"I'm here purely as a student right now. My teacher just seemed to have the worst luck when sending me out. If I was here as one, you would have already known."

"I thought you guys always had one of those as a contract?"

"We are but-" Conor got out before being silenced by a loud grunt. It shook the earth and was followed by a cacophony of roars, howls, and calls.

The hoard that had waited for so long surged forward.

first of sorry for the late chapter, i got busy with irl stuff and went on a lore writing spree, eating the time that should have been used for the chapter. If any of you know what the crest is of nice, but you won't learn why its so important till later. This was more of a Conor chap and who he is, is pretty important to my world but not saying anything more. Anyways thank you for reading once again and i'll hopefully see you next time -why
