Chapter 275: Chapter 275 : Against Dragons 2
The first round of the Triwizard Tournament was finally underway, and the excitement of the people sitting in the audience was evident. The stands were filled with students, teachers, and pretending to be humans, their eyes glued to the arena where the champions would face their first challenge.
Rose was the first to step forward, her potter luck acting up. Her heart pounded as she walked into the arena, knowing that everyone was watching was a different sort of pressure.
If only she believed Orion and prepared for this, but nothing could have fully prepared her for the sight that greeted her. There, standing between her and the golden egg, was a massive dragon. Its scales shimmered menacingly, and smoke billowed from its nostrils.
'Remember the training and you will be alright.' That is what Orion told to her, but suddenly she felt that she couldn't remember any training upon seeing the dragon.
Now of course Oron was looking at this and he would immediately act to save Rose if needed; however not until it was not urgent. Otherwise, he wanted to let Rose handle this problem herself.
The dragon roared, a sound that shook the ground and made Rose's heart skip a beat. She took a deep breath, gripping her wand tightly. This was it. She had to get past the dragon and retrieve the golden egg.
Rose began by casting a Disillusionment Charm on herself, hoping to make herself less visible to the dragon. Unlike Harry from the movies and books, she had more brains thanks to the exposure of Orion.
She moved cautiously, trying to stay out of its line of sight. However, dragons are not very limited to eyes like we humans are. Dragons can smell as well and so did this dragon, it instantly picked up on her movement, and it turned its massive head toward her.
"Incendio!" Rose shouted, aiming her wand at the ground near the dragon's feet. Flames erupted, but the dragon barely flinched. Instead, it responded with a jet of fire, forcing Rose to dive out of the way.
She jumps out before even the flames cover half of the distance and hides behind a rock. Orion's training was already working here, maybe not directly magically but the physical improvement was great showing her agility and reflexes at this point.
'Good thing that he is chained.' Rose jokes to herself trying, trying to find any positive in this.
She needed a new plan. Remembering what she had learned about dragons, Rose decided to try a Conjunctivitis Curse, which could temporarily blind the creature.
She aimed carefully and cast the spell, careful that the dragon didn't notice her doing so, hitting the dragon in the eye. The dragon roared in pain, thrashing its head wildly.
Seizing the opportunity, Rose sprinted towards the golden egg. Again fast enough that it shocked many people watching her, she was almost there when the dragon, now enraged, swung its tail at her. Rose barely managed to roll out of the way, feeling the wind from the tail's swing pass just inches from her.
'That was close, that was very close...' She can't help but complain.
Panting, she got back on her feet. She needed to distract the dragon long enough to grab the egg. With a flick of her wand, she conjured a flock of birds to fly around the dragon's head. The dragon snapped at the birds, momentarily distracted by the flurry of movement.
Rose ran towards the egg again, her heart pounding in her chest. She could feel the heat of the dragon's breath behind her, but she was so close. Just a few more steps.
As she reached for the egg, the dragon turned back to her again, a roar accompanying that.
'Really, I was so close.' Rose wanted to continue but that was dangerous. She felt a warm feeling behind her, a sense of danger coming to her.
Looking back, she noticed that fire was rushing towards her.
Desperate, Rose cast a Shield Charm just in time to deflect another burst of fire. The heat was intense, but the shield held.
One good thing was that there was some distance between her and the Dragon, so with one final lunge, Rose rushed to grab the golden egg.
She saw the dragon going to throw another round of fire at her but instead of stopping, she waved her wand.
"Expelliarmus." She shouted aiming directly at the dragon's eyes. Under Orion, she had learned how good manipulation of magic can change normal spells into something else.
This was one of it, if fired with enough power and compression, then it can act like a bullet. Its was hard to control magic to that level, especially for someone who doesn't have very developed magic circuits but Rose learned it nonetheless.
And that worked, she was able to stop the dragon and grabbed the golden egg at that last moment.
She felt its weight in her hands, solid and reassuring. The crowd erupted in cheers as she held it aloft, a triumphant smile spreading across her face.
The dragon, seeing that its treasure had been taken, roared about to act again but instead of attacking it didn't move further, because the round ended in Rose's victory the moment she got the golden egg.
After that, the caretakers enter the ring and control the dragon. And this dragon being not that ferocious, didn't make a fuss either.
Back in the champion's tent, Orion was waiting for her, a proud smile on his face. "What'd I told ya, you go this," he said, clapping her on the shoulder.
Rose grinned, her heart still racing. "Thanks, Orion. That was... crazy."
"You did great, now rest. It's my turn," Orion replied. As he was ready to go out. Seeing this Rose's face differs a little.
"Hmm Orion, don't hurt the dragon, refrain yourself out there okay," Rose said this, herself feeling how ridiculous she sounded but what could she do? This was Orion she was talking about.
Orion had a black line at this, 'What you mean by that. Do I look like a monster to you ?'
