Chapter 16: Seeking answers in the night sky

Noah continued to navigate the bustling, vehicle-filled road, seemingly immune to the relentless symphony of honking horns. His mind remained consumed by Lilly's image, and he couldn't help but ponder the enigma of his feelings for her, especially in light of their complex history.

As he traversed the street, Noah's thoughts drifted back to that moment in the park when he had witnessed Lilly's distress. Her hands pressed against her ears, as if shielding herself from something he couldn't hear, had left a lasting impression. He found himself replaying the scene in his mind.

Then, amid the hustle and bustle, Noah noticed an elderly woman struggling to cross the road. Without hesitation, he stepped in to assist her, guiding her safely to the other side. Grateful, the grandmother offered him a heartfelt blessing, telling him he would find his soulmate. Noah couldn't help but smile at her words, though the mysteries of his own life remained far from unravelling. With a nod of appreciation, he continued on his way, leaving the elderly woman behind on the busy street.

Noah's arrival home brought him face to face with the woman in her forties, his mother, who patiently waited for him as if it were a daily ritual. The resemblance between them, particularly the striking shade of their captivating blue eyes, was evident. Her presence in his life was a comforting constant.

However, his demeanour changed as soon as their gazes met. She couldn't help but voice her concern, "I saw you with that girl. Don't play with her feelings because of the past. It's clear she has genuine feelings for you. I can see it in the smile that lights up your eyes when you're with her. Don't deceive her, my son. It will only tarnish your soul. Why don't you let go of the past and move forward?"Her maternal concern was evident as she spoke of Lilly's sincerity, but her gaze hinted at something more profound-a concern for her son's well-being

Noah responded with a hint of defensive arrogance, his voice sharp, "Mom, are you following me? Why do you still care about me? I've told you a thousand times—I know what I'm doing with my life. I won't bother you. You can easily forget the past, but I can't. I'm the one who suffered because of it. Don't worry about my life; I know what I'm doing. Maybe I'll play with her, make her feel the way I did. It's my choice. She deserves it. Don't come here any more; I feel suffocated when you appear."His words cut through the air, leaving his mother emotionally shaken

She couldn't hold back her tears, the vast oceanic depths of her eyes and emotions were too deep to hide. She placed some food on the steps, then hurried away without looking back, leaving behind a son consumed by his inner turmoil.

Noah stood there torn between there turmoil of his past and the uncertainty of his future, his heart as restless as the bustling street outside

Noah stormed into his home, his frustration echoing in the loud slam of the front door. Emotions swirled within him like a tempest, demanding release. Seeking an escape from the turmoil, he made a beeline for the bathroom, craving the solace of a cold shower. The frigid water, like an icy balm, cascaded over his pale skin, offering a momentary reprieve. Under the relentless stream, he stood in contemplation for what felt like an eternity, letting the cold wash away the burning anger that had consumed him.

After finally emerging from the shower, he retreated to his room, still burdened by a sense of sadness and confusion. The events of the day baffled him, particularly his impulsive embrace of Lilly when he had resolved to keep his distance. Questions swirled in his mind, tormenting him. Why had Lilly become so suddenly frustrated? What was the weighty secret she had been on the brink of sharing? And why was it nearly impossible for him to resist her magnetic pull?

His eyes fell upon the brown, weathered box, an artefact of his past that never failed to stir melancholy within him. It stood as a testament to unresolved issues and memories that continued to haunt him. He couldn't help but wonder if he had forgotten something crucial, a missing piece that might unravel the mystery of Lilly's enigmatic past.

The relentless need for answers, he was determined to unveil the truth behind Lilly's past. His decision was driven by curiosity, the yearning for closure, and a disquieting urge to make her confront the consequences of her actions. He wanted her to experience the painful punishment she deserved for her past deeds.

While Noah grappled with his inner turmoil, he found solace in the quiet night. As he gazed out of his window, a single star gleamed brightly, seeming to watch over him. In a moment of almost eerie connection, he addressed the star, its brilliance reflecting his resolve.

"Hey," he whispered to the celestial beacon, "don't worry. I'll never forget you. I'll make her pay for what she's done."

Closing his eyes under the gentle glow of the moonlight, the tears that welled within them were illuminated by the lunar radiance. The cool night breeze embraced him, lulling him into a state of drowsiness.
