Chapter 15: Healing smiles

Noah and Lilly, now seated at a quaint park bench, shared a moment of tranquillity after their meal. The warm sunlight filtered through the leaves overhead, and a gentle breeze riffled the pages of a nearby book. Turning to Lilly, Noah's eyes brimmed with genuine concern as he asked, "Lilly if you're comfortable, could you tell me what happened earlier? I might not fully understand it, and I can't guarantee I can help, but I want you to know that I'll stand by your side, no matter what."

Lilly's gaze locked onto his, and for a fleeting moment, it was as if the rest of the world vanished. She inhaled deeply and began, "Noah, I have a problem. I haven't even confided in Maria, though somehow, she seems to sense it. Please, promise me you won't mention this to Maria. If the right time comes I will tell everything to her. Now I don't want to add to her worries."

Lilly tried to voice her concerns to Noah, but her words remained trapped, like an ocean contained in her emerald-green eyes. Noah assured her, "Lilly, you don't have to tell me if it's too difficult. Don't shed any more tears, okay? Remember, I don't want to be seen walking with a crying girl," he teased, a hint of a smile dancing on his lips. Lilly responded with a mixture of mock irritation and a smile, the tension between them easing.

Noah, determined to lift Lilly's spirits, walked her home with an air of lightheartedness. Along the way, he told her jokes and made her laugh, all intended to create a joyful aura around them. He went to great lengths to clear any topic that might remind Lilly of the distressing incident from earlier. In his company, the heavy weight of her worries seemed to vanish, if only for a while, replaced by the warmth of friendship and the promise of better days ahead.

Maria had been waiting anxiously at home, her gaze fixed on the window upstairs. She couldn't help but feel a flutter of excitement when she saw Lilly. She knew that something significant had transpired earlier, something that had shaken Lilly to her core. It had been years since she'd seen her friend truly happy, her infectious charisma lighting up the room.

As she peered through the window, the sight that greeted her was nothing short of heartwarming. Lilly and Noah strolled side by side, bathed in the soft, golden hues of the setting sun. Their laughter, so genuine and carefree, reached her ears, and Maria felt a lump forming in her throat. It was the Lilly she had missed for so long, the Lilly who smiled with her radiant emerald eyes and made everyone around her feel alive.

Tears welled up in Maria's eyes, but they were tears of joy. She couldn't help but see herself as a silent matchmaker, witnessing the rekindling of her friend's spirit and the incredible transformation that Noah had brought into her life. The emotions that swelled within her were a mixture of relief, happiness, and an overwhelming sense of gratitude for this newfound happiness in Lilly's life.

Lilly returned home with a bright smile, her heart lightened by the day's events. As she entered the house, she couldn't help but notice Maria's somewhat serious expression. Curious, she asked, "Maria, what's going on?"

Maria burst into laughter and wrapped Lilly in a warm hug. "Lilly, I'm genuinely thrilled for you," she exclaimed. "You look so radiant now. And look at this photo I took from upstairs! You two look positively romantic," Maria teased.

Lilly chuckled a hint of pink in her cheeks. "Maria, come on! We're just friends. He's a good friend, that's all. Don't make it look like we're a couple!" She couldn't help but be amused by Maria's playful teasing.

With a sly tone, Maria added, "Who knows what will happen, Lilly."

Lilly just rolled her eyes playfully, not taking Maria's words too seriously. She retreated to her room, where exhaustion quickly took over. She flopped onto her bed, gazing at Noah's coat hanging on the side. It brought a smile to her face.

But her moment of peace was interrupted by the buzzing of her phone. She picked it up to find a message from Maria. It was the picture of Noah and Lilly, accompanied by a message that read, "Best of luck." Lilly's frustration bubbled up, and she yelled Maria's name loudly in her room, a mix of anger and embarrassment in her voice.

Maria's laughter echoed from outside, a mischievous and gleeful sound. Maria enjoyed teasing Lilly, and she especially relished the playful reactions she would elicit from her friend.
