Jolien stared at the clouds, as the sun was peeking through them, finding its way to them and she didn't get much sleep. It was always like this most of the nights she just couldn't sleep either because of the demon or her own thoughts.
"Open the door Jolien" It was her mother, being her alarm in the morning. The door flew open and she got into the room.
"You're still sleeping, is that how you get to live your life, daughter?" She asked. Now she wanted to chase her out of the house.
"There's a meeting that going to hold soon"
She sat up on the bed.
"Get ready… this might be the last time you would be in a court meeting" her mother said before heading for the door.
"Don't forget to have breakfast love" she smiled before leaving the room.
Jolien sneered. Her mum was really hell bent on marrying her off, it made her wonder if she's really her mother. Thoughts aside, she has to get ready.
She sauntered into the bathroom and soaked herself in a tub of warm water before getting out and getting dressed by the maids as usual before they showered her with perfumes.
She stepped out of her room and got to the dining. The table was full of people unlike the last time, it was only her and her mother and her father, sometimes.
Forgoing breakfast, her eyes landed on her brothers then on Zay who was standing by the side. He looked like he was serving everyone on the table.Jolie's brows furrowed.
'What's he doing?'
Last time she checked, he's not a servant and Lords don't serve meals either.
She walked to the table and found a seat for herself. Mouth-watering dishes filled the table as usual but they didn't move Jolien. She was so used to eating the freshest meals everyday that it became an obligation just to stuff food in her stomach.
Surprisingly, no one had touched their meals and they were looking at Jolien. She wondered whether she should take the first bite or wait for her father.
"Jolien you should taste the food first… it was made by Zay" Mrs Irene said.
Jolien glanced at Zay and then at the food.
'So the little boy could cook' Sadly she couldn't.
She dished the meal and started eating. It tasted wonderful but she didn't say it. She just continued. They followed after she didn't say a thing.
A meeting was coming up soon and might determine whether she will remain in the clutches of her mother or not. That was more important than telling if the meal was delicious or not.
They got to the throne room. The entire royal Court seemed to be present and the Lords too and the young men that were soon going to be Lords which Zay was amongst them. He had a frown on his face.
The King was calling the young Lords out and giving them the duties that they had to accomplish to fully become a Lord. Jolien sat beside her mother. Whatever they were doing at the meeting was a burden to her mind.
"You are not enjoying the meeting," her mother said.
'Who would enjoy something that's so boring?'
She tried to distract herself but there was no way. Her mother was right beside her. Jolien was patiently anticipating Zay's mission and soon they called him out and gave him some kind of scroll. She might as well tell her mother that she's following Zay so she can run away from her clutches.
The meeting was soon over but they retained the Lords in their seats. This was her chance to tell them that she wanted to leave.
"King Julius…" It was Zay. Everyone stopped the whispering and turned to him
"I ask for an audience" he added and the whispers continued.
The King waved his hand at him.
'What was he going to say now?'
"I like to ask that you grant me the request of the Princess following me for this mission" he said and Jolien swallowed.
Never in her life did she think that her little brother would do that for her. She always did the asking and begging herself but now he was doing it for her. She couldn't hide the small smile that was creeping to her face till she heard the voice in her head.
"Gotcha"
She raised her brows in confusion. What did the demon mean?. The voice went silent like she never heard a thing. As much as she wanted to sweep her thoughts under the carpet. They came ringing right back in her head.
The scene in front of her seemed to stop and she couldn't hear what they were saying till her mother tapped her.
"Are you listening to me?" The woman asked. Staring at her with some kind of glint.
"What did you say mother?"
"You are unbelievable… you made arrangements to go on a mission with Zay without my knowledge" she said, shifting uncomfortably in her seat.
"You just found out mother" there's no need to tell her again and she can be free from the Princess life even if it's for a short while.
"Jolien you can go with Zay if you want" her father said and she couldn't be more delighted.
It was the best news that she had heard in a while.
"I will be leaving then" she excused herself and went off to her room. As soon as she was in her room she started packing all she needed.
"Leaving doesn't solve anything sweetheart," Mrs Irene said.
If Jolien was still a child she would think her mother wanted her close to love her even more but that wasn't the case. Her mother had told her that she's a queen and she will also treat her like how the queen treats the people she's ruling.
So she knew that even if her mother loves her, she would definitely limit the kind of love she shows so she wouldn't appear weak.
That's why she doesn't want to be a queen , especially a loveless one. She would find what's honest for her and she wouldn't find it beside her mum.
"I will be back… better than before" or maybe it would be the complete opposite.
"You can't convince me with those words if you don't come back with an improvement then your days here will be shortened a lot"
