Chapter 161: Chapter 161 - Inject Themselves
After reading all the messages I put my phone to sleep and tossed it off to the side. A part of me wanted to react right away and punish Frankie for putting me in this situation.
However, rationally acting now would not work in my favor. I had no idea if she was still in Paris and I would need to collect more data on her if I want my retaliation to bear any weight.
'I am sure Dean probably has a good idea of what to do as it seemed he was already wary of her.'
The kemal turn we would take to head home my Dad skipped and took a different route instead. "Dad you missed the turn." I thought he might have been lost in his thoughts that he missed it on accident.
"I know." He responded curtly and continued to take a round about way for us to get back. However it became very obvious once we passed a wooded area and through the break of the trees the front of our house was swarming with reporters.
We managed to enter without being seen and I thought my parents would confront me right away demanding an explanation but they both went about their own way.
My father went into his office and my mother went to their bedroom.
I was left alone. It was hard to tell if they were deliberately ignoring me or just not angry any more but regardless I took the opportunity to go to my room to rest.
I grabbed a bottle of pain reliever and took a pill before laying down. My clothes and luggage left unopened by my closet. I managed to sleep for a few hours before I was finally called down.
I was groggy but I collected myself ready for whatever my parents threw at me.
They both sat at the dining room table looking serious. My mother had hot drinks ready for us and my dad had an old box set to his right.
"How are you feeling right now?" My mother finally decided to break the silence as her face displayed concern.
"I am ok just a bit jet lagged." I rubbed the tiredness out of my eyes and sat down.
"Good. Now let's just start with the obvious. Are you and Dean Cortez in a relationship?"
A hard hitting question. "Yes. We decided to be with one another just recently." I expected my mom and dad to maybe blow up in anger but neither reacted. It was as if I commented on the weather.
"Ok and what was the photo about? Why was he out on the trip with you?"
"Before I explain the photo I want to give some context. I had this trip planned way earlier in the year. But I did not anticipate ending up in a relationship with Dean. It sort of just happened and I invited him on the trip. As for the photo we believe an old classmate named Frankie Rhodes took the photo as we saw her in Paris but I do not have concrete evidence yet."
Now they had some type of reaction. My mother scrunched her face in irritation while my dad pinched his nose bridge before letting go to massage his temples. He seemed to be thinking hard on what to say.
"I see."
For a while neither side said anything. As much as I wanted to defend my relationship the way they decided to go about this tripped me up. So I waited to let them make the calls.
After a long sigh my dad spoke up. "As much as your mother and I wish you stayed a little girl, we have to face the music. You are a grown woman. And a wonderful one at that. You have never done anything to misplace our trust and you constantly work hard to make your own path. So we never wanted to interfere when it came to things about love as much like us you deserve to helm that ship. However, do you understand the position this puts us under. This puts you under?"
There was a deep sadness in his eyes. One which in my life I have never seen my father make. "As you know the Cortez family and ours have a long history. One that spans generations. Our families practically built this country from the ground up. The money we have is very old and vast. You think it hasn't been thought of whether the families should be combined?"
He pushed back his hair and pulled out some items from the box. It was pages and pages of contracts, photos, and even old books.
"I never expected this to have to bring this out but these are the belongings of our ancestors. These books in particular discuss when the ban was created."
He pushed the books to me and I flipped through them and the old ink showed the thoughts and feelings of their previous owner. One who desperately wanted to marry their true love.
"It was thought about but some people felt it would be as though this country was ruled by a royal family. So to prevent that rules in the government were made regarding any possible marriage alliance between our familes. Even aside from that, some members have very personal beef with one another."
My mother also looked immersed in the history my dad was sharing.
"I know it may sound silly to even be talking about marriage considering what I assume to be a recent relationship, but people will want to prepare if there is a merger. I bet you have already been getting texts and emails about loyalty."
I felt chills as it was true.
"I would never admit it to the kids face but he has proven that he can be reliable and a good partner for you. But that being said if you both decide to become official there will be roadblocks and problems as people try to inject themselves into your relationship."
" I want to have faith but I want you to see why I am hesitant about this. You are my child whom I love dearly. As much as I want to shield you from the world I can't. And this will pop whatever is left of the bubble your mother and I built."
