The letter was... surprising. It almost felt too easy in a way.
I could not say with full confidence that I knew exactly what Dantes family was like. The only day I met them was the day I broke up with him. However, in our short interaction they seemed prideful and seemed to not care about what others thought. They had their own plan and methods and intended to stick to that.
Normally, that is not necessarily a bad trait to have. After all, everyone in entitled to their own belief systems and methods. My issue is that they expected me to fit in their way rather than carve out a space with how I prefer to do things. Or at least take my ideas into account.
So for them to 'give up' so easily seems out of character for them.
Dante was so adamant on getting back together with me I had not expected for his family to just remove marriage off the table. They way he spoke about me made me think he was not the only one in his family to think that way. "Seems to easy huh?" My grandma who stood beside me gave a cryptic smile. "Yeah... I mean I won't make a fuss since this is what I want but it feels... off in a way. I have a feeling it will blow up in my face somehow."
Those gut feelings were normally what I relied on but lately my decision making skills have not been the best. At least regarding him and his family. "I would not fret too much on it. This..." She waved her hand over the letter in a circular motion. "...was not the doing of him or his parents but rather his grandparents."
She nodded to herself and folded her arms across her chest. "When we moved back to Milan and we spent time with the old patriarchs, their personality became very clear. The one thing they loathe the most is a tie between owing someone and embarrassment."
She clicked her tongue in a tact manner. "That boy made a huge mistake with how he handled and continues to handle that woman. By not taking care of it properly from when it started he made a huge mess that if his name leaked would have been very bad news for his family."
"They keep their privacy and to themselves for a reason and anything that threatens it needed to have been notified to his parents and grandparents. Because no one knew, there was very little that they could have done. Now they have a foreign woman whom they have to deal with but can't do so in their preferred manner as her family is aware of where she is."
Her words were ominous. It was very clear what she meant by 'in their preferred manner'.
"So while we got lucky that we did not end up in the cross fires, we need to be better about the company we keep." She patted my cheek before leaving to return to the game she was playing earlier. But I felt more conflicted than before. Her words seemed to imply something else.
"Ahh I see."
I decided to leave it as is for now. Both sets of grandparents decided to return to their homes now that they have seen I was doing well. Though it would not be for a long time as before since they decided to both come by as well as us come over more consistently. I think the health scare made everyone aware of how easily life is made and taken. Though I also agreed, life was too short to not spend it with loved ones.
The next couple of weeks flew by as though my major health scare never occurred. Life moved on and a new routine began for me. Dean and I continued our work routine but any chance Dean could find, he incorporated dates for us. It was small and intimate but I like those dates the most. He was a surprising romantic as he planned everything himself and really showcased his thoughtfulness. In return, I also tried to find things for him to enjoy as well.
My friends and I had our regular monthly hangouts and soon enough I got over my unease of eating in a restaurant. Overall, it was a pace I was comfortable with and greatly enjoyed. However the small window of peace was soon interrupted by another letter arriving to my house. And this time it was one that no one was expecting.
"The nerve to send this here." It was a wedding invitation for Felix and Sol. 'So Dean was right, seems they have worked it out amongst themselves.' I could practically taste the anger rolling from my parents but honestly I just felt relief.
'Hopefully this means that they will leave me alone now.'
It was now the end of September and the wedding is set to be in the middle of December. None of the other weddings in our friend group happened that quickly. The only one who was kind of fast was Rachel but even then hers has been planned since forever. She technically planned their wedding a whole year before the engagement. "That way as soon as I am engaged one phone call and its all set."
It was an odd thing but if it made her feel better I was not one to judge.
"I don't want to go." My mother was the first to speak up. She looked at the invitation as though it were a cursed object. "I will not waste my time attending an event of someone who thought they could treat our daughter the way he did."
I looked at the date and it was inconvenient anyways. December was one of the worst times as the holidays were a busy time.
"What about you kiddo, would you want to go?" He always followed what my myself and my mom wanted. To him that was the only opinion he cared about. "No. Aside from my personal feelings, that week I will be in France. A fellow precious stone collector has come across a batch of painite which is a rare stone. We agreed on a collaboration to design and sell a limited edition collection.
Fleur Dubois is a precious stone collector who I met when I initially began my jewelry business. She is an older woman who has been collecting and appraising stone for decades. Her knowledge is vast and amazing. We struck up a friendship and even though now she is retired, she will share of she finds anything good. I asked her to help create a collection as she has been a huge influence on how I select, cut and polish my stones.
