Celestes call in the morning was refreshing for me to hear. I have not slept well since I left the hospital so hearing her voice made me feel a lot better about her situation.
I vividly remember the last time I saw her when she had her allergic reaction at school. Not only just seeing her in the hallway but the aftermath in the hospital killed me inside. She looked like she got beat up which pained me.
I heard back from my buddies at the station and it was worse than I thought. Irene Peterson was insane and seemingly mentally unstable. She lived in a delusional world where Dante loved her and inadvertently it also meant Celeste was her enemy. I was unsure how she could manage to find all this private information yet did not see that Celeste had no interest in Dante anymore.
I was still at my parents home but thankfully no one asked or seemed to have known I left in the middle of the night. As I headed down to eat my mom caught up with me. "Good morning honey how are you?"
She was already dressed for the day. Usually on weekends she would go to events like the theater or if any of her friends were available she would go hang out with them. "Good mom just about to head out." But I caught the look in her eye. She seemed very excited about something. "James I need a favor from you."
When she called me by my nickname I knew it could fly one of two ways. She had something I would enjoy, or was trying to coax me to do something I hated. I knew saying no before hearing her out would get me in trouble with her so I decided to listen.
"Whats up?" We headed to the kitchen together and ate the food already set aside for us. "Do you know Kirsten Goodall?" I tried to recall her name but nothing came up. "No?" I smeared some butter on a piece of toast hoping the conversation would not head to what my mom loved to talk about most.
"She is a matchmaker. Her ability to find peoples perfect partner is amazing. She has a 90% success rate. So given that, I made an appointment and I want you to go." It was then I choked on my toast. I had to chug some orange juice to wash everything down. So we have finally come to the crossroads of getting a matchmaker.
The rate my mom was going I figured it would come sooner or later but I was hoping more so on the later part. Once I cleared my throat I gave my mom an exasperated look. "Mom we have discussed this I get you worry for me but this is not the way to go about it."
She got up and came back with her purse. From the bag she grabbed a pamphlet. "Look she is not a normal matchmaker who just pairs people based on their background. She looks at birth charts, your zodiac, and does a tarot reading to tell you about your future partner. Then she draws out the file of your marriage partner. She has a master list of many eligible women. I think you should give it a try."
I never really understood my moms obsession with finding me a wife but I let it go out for far too long. Initially I thought about just telling her I was seeing someone but I know she would try to find out who or make it difficult for me to see Celeste. So my next option was bargaining.
"You know what I am running late for the things I need to do today. I need to head out but how about this, if I go to the appointment will you promise that you will never do this again and let me handle my business in who becomes my wife. I mean it mom, no more blind dates, no surprise appointments, nothing you understand."
She seemed a bit surprised at my offer but then happily shook my hand. "Deal! The appointment is at 5 pm. Just come straight home she will be here." I figured I would hear the lady out and then just decline whoever she offers for me.
I rolled my eyes but I had pressing matters to attend to so I left right away. I stopped by a local market to pick up some flowers and fresh fruit. I knew she liked apples so I got some large ones as well as some strawberries. By the time I arrived it was nearing noon.
I headed straight up to the VIP floor. I had sent a text to her father letting him know I was stopping by to not catch them by surprise. The nurses staffed at the desk greeted me and brought me directly to her room.
Unlike the last time I came she was awake. She slowly turned her head to see who came in as she was facing the window watching the sky outside. She was nearly as swollen as the last time I saw her allergic reaction happen. Her face was like a panda bear as her eyes were splotched with purple bruising from the sudden swelling.
Her neck was wrapped in bandages and she had various other bruises on her arms. I took a deep breath to control my anger and walked in as I normally would. "How is my VIP patient doing?"
Her father who was asleep on the pullout off to the side got up immediately at the sound of my voice. "Hey kiddo good to see you. Thanks for stopping by." Celeste smiled at her dad before speaking in a low voice. "I am doing much better now than I was before. What brings you by?"
We both knew why I was here but she teased me nonetheless. "I heard what happened and I figured that aside from apples giving good health.." I grabbed one of the apples and placed it into her open palms. "Good company heals just as well."
I also handed an apple to her dad who now was sitting up. "Don't worry I have plenty to share." I set the flowers at a nearby table and took a seat in the rolling chair nearby. "Thank you again Dean for accommodating my requests."
I smiled and gave him a salute. "Of course." He smiled and saluted back before using one of the provided utensils in the room to slice up the apples. Before I could converse with Celeste her father came by and handed her the apples and tapped my shoulder.
"We will be right back honey, I just want to discuss some safety stuff with Dean regarding the hospital."
