Chapter 38: He Who Takes Care of My Kids

I suddenly heard someone clearing their throat. Then I remembered Migs.

I closed my eyes and started poking Duncan's chest. I was so lost in his touch that I forgot that we were not really alone.

Thor finally laughed, and the glare I sent his way only made him laugh even harder. I got so mad that I tried to hit him. But the counter was in the way.

Thor only dodged and sticks out his tongue like a kid. Me? I reached for the nearest object on the table. A pen. I was about to throw it, but it was snatched by Duncan. I glared at him, in return, he smiled, kissed my nose, and said "Behave."

Did he just?! Augh!

I closed my eyes and only leaned against him. I looked at Migs from the corner of my eyes. There was something about his eyes that made me want to go to him. To explain who Duncan was. But something held me back.

Somehow, even though he was the one who left me hanging. I felt the need to apologize for my actions. Which was actually ridiculous, then again, should I really talk to him?

"MOMMY!"

It was Nicole who broke the tension between us. She came running from the front door with Fall and Claude behind her. Both of my children looked like they rolled around a huge pile of dried leaves. Their clothes were covered and I could also see some stuck in their hair.

Nicole did shout my name, but when she saw Duncan, squealed and shouted, "DADDY!"

Wait, what?

Did my daughter just call Duncan "Daddy"?

"Daddy!" Claude also shouted.

Why are my kids calling Duncan 'daddy?'

I looked at the man who was undeterred by the sudden turn of events. He has a smile on his lips that bespoke what he had heard. Then again, he had been a father-like figure to them for the past two months.

Warmth. I feel warm inside. The way he had been taking care of our needs was not something I was expecting from him. He was a god, a CEO of several chains of hotels, and a laird. Why did he pick us?

I looked at Migs once more. He was clearly not expecting the kids and Duncan. Then again, who would? The last time we spoke he was saying "Sorry, and I love you."

It wasn't until I looked at your social media page that I fully realized what he was talking about.

That was the first time my heart broke.

"Woah!" Duncan exclaimed. Nicole ran to him at full speed colliding with his legs. "Nikky! How is my little princess?"

"We played in the forest," Nicole said, her grin so wide and infectious.

"I can see that," he replied. He picked her up, placing her on the top of the front desk. Then he started plucking dead leaves that were stuck in her hair. Duncan smiled at her and asked, "Did you enjoy it?"

"Yes!" She exclaimed with glee. I rarely saw my daughter this happy. She was always a reserved little girl. To see her smile and have fun made up for all the wrong decisions I have made. "Me and kuya rolled around the dead leaves! There were so many of them!"

Duncan looked at my son who was busy plucking the leaves that were stuck on his clothes. I was about to help him, when he smiled at me and said, "I can do this, mommy."

"Claude, you okay? Nothing happened?" Asked Duncan.

"None, uncle." He replied, and continued, "everything was fine. Fall was always beside Nikky, he made sure that she was safe."

He looked down and grimaced, the carpet was littered with leaves. From the look on his face, he was contemplating cleaning it. Thor beat him.

The god of thunder was rounding up the corner with a vacuum in thow. "Fall has some trouble with the thistles stuck on his fur. Could you help him? Your "daddy" is busy with making Nicole human rather than a nymph."

There was a grin on Claude's face. It was a playful look that I have never seen before.

Duncan smiled at my eldest son, it was like the two had something cooked up. I could not help but be proud of my kids.

They were slowly growing up. And Duncan's presence was making them flourish.

I looked at my kids. They were listening to him, and the way he carried Nicole with ease was making my heart swell with love.

The attention they did not get from their real father was given to them by a stranger.

Their paths crossed by an accident. Looking back and knowing what he was, this was not an accident. Then again, I don't believe in ko incidences there is only the inevitable.

I looked at where Migs were. I released a small sigh when he wasn't there anymore.

"He went to his room, Julie," Thor said. "The man was shocked seeing you kiss Duncan, and hearing your kids call him dad." He gave me a leveled look and continued, "he was here for a book signing event."

"Heh?!"

"Yes, he came all the way here from…" Thor paused trying to remember where Migs were from, "Australia to see you."

"How did he…"

"He must have known you that well to figure out you are Nicolette Claude," the god of thunder replied. "He sounded so eager to see you too."

"Mommy, I'm hungry. Can we have some food?"

Nicole interjected. I smiled at my little girl. She was swinging her legs while sitting at the front desk. Duncan was beside her, making sure she was safe.

Fall approached the two and the dog rubbed his master's leg before walking to the reception area. He lay underneath the tall window and waited for the kids.

"Your 'daddy' would know," I replied. Empathizing the word Daddy made Duncan laugh.

"My lass," he replied.

"What? I was about to go back and write. Not sure what food we have here. Your 'daddy' had been here with some guests. You and Claude make sure you eat well okay?" I kissed my daughter's forehead and then gave Claude a pat on the head.

Before I could reach the door Duncan called me. When I looked back at him, my body couldn't help but shiver. The way his eyes were glowing spoke volumes. And in one single word, he made my body sing.

"Tonight."
