Today had turned out to be total shit.

Right about now, Nicasi should have been dragging Lysander to a secluded spot to give him a quick taste of what he'd earned on his first official day as the Acolyte of Logic. But instead of delivering on all the things he'd spent the afternoon describing to Lysander through their mental connection, Nicasi was on the verge of passing out from blood loss.

The novices sat with Loma and Mara on one side of the magically protected alcove that served as Mara's hiding spot. Nicasi chose a spot on the other for Aiden to work on his leg.

Determined not to let the novices see how badly one of the creatures had injured him, Nicasi gritted his teeth as he lowered himself to the ground.

His pant leg was completely saturated with his own blood from hip to knee. A cold sweat slicked his forehead, plastering his hair against his skin. His energy reserves were the lowest they'd ever been, and his broken conduit lay at his side.
