Rafe’s feet stopped moving. Swallowing hard, he asked, “What’s to stop some pheromone-crazed asshole in there from raping me?” His terror was genuine.

“I’m not a monster. I’ll make certain only betas come in contact with you. In the meantime, I’ll be searching for your accomplice. If I learn what I need from him, I’ll get you out of here. Rafael, I’m sorry—I had hoped…” His gaze fell. “It wasn’t meant to be.”

Grant led him to the reception desk and flashed his ID at the sergeant. “Omega Council business. I need you to house this prisoner for a few days. He’s to be kept in solitary and seen only by beta officers. No visitors other than me and no phone calls. And for God’s sake, don’t let him near a computer. Is that clear?” Grant leaned over the officer and growled, “If anything happens to him, I’ll have your badge, your pension, and maybe your life.”

If things weren’t so dire, Rafe might have laughed. Didn’t Grant realize how much he sounded like a feral alpha defending his mate?
