The Exit Strategy

The Exit Strategy

"So what now? You know how she feels Blake. She's in love with you, she's been for a while now" Sighing I ran my hand through my hair in frustration, "I know, trust me, I know". She walked away from me and leaned against the huge window peering into the night. "If you go you won't just break her heart. You will break her... forever". I shook my head, my hands tightening around the handle of the duffel bag full of clothes that I'd packed in a rush mere minutes ago. I looked up at her, "What do I do then?". She smirked but still didn't turn to fully face me "You do what you so best, only, this time you get to create your own exit strategy". "No, Siara!", I replied a little too harshly "she's not one of my assignments. I can't do that to her. I won't". Her head whipped around to face me and she narrowed her eyes "Then leave Blake!" she shouted, you're already packed so go. But don't forget the devastation you'll be leaving behind when you do". I closed my eyes tightly fighting against the raw emotions riling in my chest. Stirring and making a mess out of everything that has to make sense to me. "You know I'm right", Siara's voice echoed through the huge empty room "but what I don't understand is why you're running away from the only girl you've ever loved". My eyes opened slowly and I lowered myself unto one of the chairs. She was right. I hated that she was right. I sighed in defeated and looked over at Siara as she took a seat beside me. She gave me a small sympathetic smile. "So what now Siara?". She gave my hand a slight squeeze "Now we create one last exit strategy. What do you say? For old times sake?".

Mr CEO, Please Exit!

Mr CEO, Please Exit!

One year... 52 weeks... 365 days... Time was measured in moments, the moments that had mattered and Shaelyn only realized this as she stared down at a medical report diagnosing her with a terminal heart condition, and a year life expectancy at best. In that moment, the regrets set in. Trapped in a loveless marriage to a man whose affections lay elsewhere, Shaelyn's life was a tragedy of unrequited love and unfulfilled dreams. Now with only a year left to live and a baby on the way, Shaelyn had just one way out...a divorce and a clean escape before Nixon could realize she was carrying his child. But what is Shaelyn to do when her CEO husband has no intentions to allow a divorce? "Shae, you can only be my woman..." Nixon whispered in Shaelyn's ears. Shaelyn clutched her abdomen on instinct, her heart pounding in her chest as a terrifying thought settled in her mind. 'He would not commit to her... and he would not let her go too...' 'What would Nixon do if he ever discovered there was more than just a vow between them now but a child too?' What is Shaelyn to do when her life comes under threat by the 'other woman'? What happens when a loving woman and mother vows bitter revenge? ~Snippet Apologize! Don’t make me think you’re an unrepentant woman!” Nixon’s voice boomed, echoing with a mix of anger and disappointment. Shaelyn felt her heart plummet as the wave of sorrow she had fought so hard to suppress crashed over her. In that moment, doubt crept into her mind. Perhaps she had misjudged everything from the very beginning; it was Nixon who had inflicted the deepest wounds upon her...not Leyla, it was her own husband. Time and again, he had chosen to seek solace in the arms of another woman, while she, standing right before him—had become invisible with just one phone call. With only a year left to live, all she sought was a fair chance at happiness. Shaelyn took a shaky breath, fighting back tears that threatened to spill over. Her voice quivered as she spoke with resignation and resolve. “Nixon, I’m exhausted. Let’s end this, let’s get a divorce.” Shaelyn made her decision clear.

The 'No Exit' in the title gives a strong impression of a lack of escape. In many novels, this can lead to intense character development. The characters could be in a prison - not necessarily a physical one, but perhaps an emotional or moral prison. There might be power dynamics at play between them, with some trying to assert control over others. The novel might also explore how people react when they are forced to confront their true selves in such a confined situation. There could be themes of guilt, redemption, or self - discovery as the characters navigate this 'no exit' scenario.
