One of my worst roommate horror stories was when my roommate would never clean up after herself. The kitchen was always a mess with dirty dishes piled high. It smelled so bad that I could barely stand to be in there. Another time, she had a party without telling me and a bunch of strangers were in our place making a racket all night.
Well, I knew someone whose roommate was extremely messy. Dirty dishes were left everywhere, and the smell in the apartment was just unbearable. There were clothes all over the living room floor, and the roommate never bothered to clean up. It got so bad that bugs started to show up, and my friend had to constantly nag the roommate to clean, which led to a lot of tension between them.
For me, the scariest part is when roommates have unpredictable and disturbing behavior. Like the one who would whisper strange things in her sleep every night. You never know what to expect from them, and it creates a really uneasy feeling.
One of the scariest aspects is the lack of respect for personal space. For example, if a roommate goes through your stuff without permission. It makes you feel violated.
The sudden and unexplained changes in behavior are really scary. For example, if a roommate who is usually friendly suddenly becomes cold and distant, and starts doing strange things like talking to themselves or staring blankly. It gives a feeling that something is seriously wrong.
Some people might try to confront their scary roommate. But that can be really risky. If you do decide to confront, it's better to do it in a public place or with a friend present. Another option is to talk to the landlord and see if they can do something about it. Maybe they can move the roommate to another unit or evict them if their behavior is really bad. Also, you could try to set some clear boundaries from the start. For example, if your roommate is doing something really strange like collecting dead things, you can firmly say that it's not okay to have those in the shared living space.
One time my roommate would always come home late at night and stand over my bed staring at me while I was sleeping. I woke up several times to see this creepy figure just looming there. It was so scary that I ended up moving out as soon as I could.
For me, it's when they invade your personal space in a really creepy way. Like going through your stuff without permission or standing too close to you all the time. It makes you feel violated and unsafe. In a horror story, this could be intensified when they start leaving strange objects in your personal area. Also, their abnormal behavior like talking to unseen entities can be really frightening as it gives an air of the supernatural.
One scary experience was when a hitchhiker got into a car and the driver started acting really erratically. He was speeding and swerving all over the road. The hitchhiker was terrified and managed to jump out at a stoplight. Another was when a hitchhiker got in a van and realized the people in it were part of a cult and they started chanting and trying to convert him. He had to fight his way out. And there was also the case where a hitchhiker got picked up by someone who seemed normal at first but then pulled out a knife and demanded all their money.
One horror story could be getting lost on the Road to Hana. There are so many winding roads and dense forests. People might end up driving in circles for hours, with no cell service to call for help. It's a terrifying feeling of being isolated in an unfamiliar place.
Some expats have horror stories related to local superstitions. One expat was warned not to go near a certain tree because it was believed to be inhabited by spirits. But being curious, they did. After that, they had a series of bad luck, like getting sick constantly and having things go missing. It could be just coincidence, but it was really spooky for them. Also, there are expats who have seen apparitions in old ancestral houses that they rented. These figures seemed to be from another time, and their presence was extremely unnerving.
