What could be the scariest thing in a horror story involving a water hovering jet pack?

Once upon a time, there was a man who got a water hovering jet pack. He was excited to try it out over a large, deep lake. As he soared above the water, suddenly the jet pack malfunctioned. It started to sputter and lose altitude rapidly. He plunged towards the water, but instead of a normal splash, he was sucked into a dark, swirling vortex beneath the surface that seemed to have a life of its own. He was never seen again.
