Lu Xun's collection of novels,"Scream" and "Hesitation", were named because of their writing period and thoughts and emotions. The Scream included some of Lu Xun's early novels that resisted darkness and called for light, such as A Madman's Diary and The True Story of Ah Q. These novels were full of criticism of social reality and thinking about the meaning of life. In "Scream", Lu Xun used the symbol of "Scream" to express his inner pain and struggle as well as his deep understanding of social reality. "Hesitation" included some short stories written by Lu Xun in the middle of his life. These works depicted the lives and emotions of the people at the bottom of society, reflecting the injustice of society and the distortion of human nature at that time. In "Hesitation", Lu Xun used "Hesitation" to symbolize the confusion and uncertainty of life, as well as the process of finding oneself and a way out in confusion. Lu Xun was at a different stage of his thoughts and emotions when he wrote Scream and Hesitation. The naming of these novels also reflected his understanding and thinking about his own writing style and social reality.
